  1. Just want to say that BooBooBee's GooTech-a-thon last Saturday was very challenging and fun! I got to experience SLMSLO's and BooBooBee's keen minds in action and got to know SLMSLO a little bit more The food and prizes were a real nice extra treat when we were finished. Thanks BooBooBee for all of your hard work and dedication in getting this event together.
  2. The 8th would work out better for me, but if everyone is going on the 1st, then I'll tell Carlos that I can't make another ride up Little Pine Mountain that he has planned for us on the 1st....frankly I've been sort of dreading that ride again since I did it last February and found the cache....I was so wasted I had to go to bed at 5:30 P.M. on a Saturday! Whatever time works out for everyone is fine with me, but 10:30 sounds pretty good.
  3. Hi BooBooBee! It's great to have you back We followed your blog pretty regularly......with all the great adventures that you and your girls were having I didn't want to load you down with e-mails to read. I finally did a couple of nice caches last weekend in Big Sur and hope to do a couple of more this weekend in Big Sur again. I wasn't able to any caching this summer because I had a High Adventure Trip to Santa Rosa Island to organize and I just couldn't seem to get my scout troop interested in geocaching then I had the govt. fiscal year end rush to deal with in late August and September. Hey there Oreo Pony! As part of the Santa Rosa Island thing I had to practice and learn ocean kayaking several times, and have basically enjoyed it, so I unfortunately won't be able to come to the Atascadero Library next weekend because I'm going out to Santa Cruz Island for some cave kayaking with a kayaking friend who went all out to be my kayak leader and keep those boys safe over at Santa Rosa and in Shell Beach. Geocats: I'm up for a hike or two in November, I'd really like to do that new trail at the south end of Montano de Oro to Pt. Goiter, er I mean Pt. Buchon
  4. Congratulations Jim - you're namesake's back! And you have me to thank for it :-) Well, sort of... We have a high-dollar client who was going to put up a stink about the trail opening right next to a piece of their property. The attorney working on the case prepared a letter that was going to cause a lot of delays no doubt. I explained to him about how my friend "Jim" would love to hike there again & how I'd love to be able to go there myself someday - legally. He came back with his letter revised and said "I thought about what you said and tamed the letter down a bit." ps - I came across some cool aerials of pt sal - I'll post them later. OP OP, you r awesome!!! I read about the property owner in the newspaper who wasn't pleased and then it sort of went off the radar....I had no idea that 'twas cause of your gift of persuasion. Thanks!
  5. ... Trail, Trail, Trail. Bill Bryson is an excellent author and I frequently recommend his books. This one is a good one too: A Short History of Nearly Everything. I read "A Short History of Nearly Everything" about 2 1/2 years ago on OP's recommendation and thought that it was definitely Bryson's best book so far!!!
  6. Just letting everyone know that the Pt. Sal Panorama Cache is back!! The road to Pt. Sal Beach is now legally open again to the beach for hiking and biking. I'll be placing another cache in that area soon! Wish I could have been at the Geocaching event that you guys had on Sunday, I'm planning on being at the June 14th event!
  7. Oh Oh! What does this mean for our Huasna hunt? Will they close the road? If not, I'm up for it in the rain. Adds to the adventure. I will try to check and see if the gate is open tomorrow before the Pizza Party. If it is we're game, but we think that we would need to hitch a ride in BooBooBee's Jeep as I feel that some of those creek crossings will probably be at least 2 ft. deep and a minimum of 10 ft wide. Whatcha' say BooBooBee? What about Riley, can she come...Labs loooooooove water!
  8. We missed you today OP, and will miss you next week:( Suebee, Riley, Naydog and Reo, had a very beautiful afternoon of checking up/finding our Pine Ridge View cache a WAY up Huasna. The cache was very much in-tact and we did find a few petroglyphs to boot. We also tried to find the What in the World cache, but had to give up when we were only 0.14 miles away, because it was pretty much dark and were looking at a solid wall of bush. We came from the Pine Ridge View cache side today, so next week we will try it from the Operation Skywatch side.... We did a enjoy a very nice moonlit walk/hike back to the vehicle:)
  9. I think we could get us all up there on the Jeep if we do something like this... heh-heh Hey, my son actually did the overcrowded jeepney thing in the Phillipines for 2 years. I really wanted to send him a GPS so he could do cachin' over there, but SueBee reminded me that he was supposed to stay focused on the mission that he was serving. He now in fact DOES have my good GPS'r over in Hawaii, even has a geocaching account, but has yet to actually go find a cache!
  10. The latest plan now is that Naydog and some friends want to go on the 19th, so I have suggested that Suebee and I go with them, but go to my Pine Ridge View cache which is a 4.6 mile roundtrip hike. The starting point is about 1 mile further up the road and there is no good way to hike from Operation Skywatch to Pine Ridge without backtracking down the Avenales Observation Rd 1st. Then on the 26th, the rest of the geocachers such as BooBooBee, LeffertsFamily, Suebee and I again would go to Operation Skywatch and What in the World caches which would still hopefully be unfound caches so that it could be a group 1st to Find! This is an approximately 4 mile round trip cache unless BooBooBee ferries everybody to the top in her jeep
  11. So, the 26th it is! It looks like so far we have BooBooBee, LeffertsFamily, and Suebee and I. We will have to figure out a rendevous point, especially if some cachers from the north come like Geocats, LostOsos, Oreo Pony, Naturesprite, and others decide to come. Maybe meet somewhere in Arroyo Grande Village? BooBooBee pointed out that this will be a good activity following the CarboLoading Geocache Pizza Event the night before on the 25th. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...49-002fd86ec1c5
  12. DANG! We really want to do this one with you, particularly if SueBee's coming along. But we'll be out of town 19th. Can you make it the 26th instead? I have Jeep and tow rope, winch (and even shower). Happy to help any way I can! We're open to the 26th, I just hope that the weather will comply. Last night on the KSBY News, it seems that they said that we are going to have about 3 weeks of dry weather. I just thought we would take advantage of this dry spell before the forecast changes. The 26th would give us all a chance to burn off all that Pizza that we are gonna consume the night before at the Geocaching Pizza Party at Giovanni's
  13. EVERYONE WHO LIKES REMOTE CACHES IN GREAT LOCATIONS READ THIS!! Late this afternoon, Suebee, Riley the Pup, and I went up Huasna Rd to scout out the as yet unfound Operation Skywatch cache and the unfound What in the World cache. We left a little too late from Santa Maria, (3:15), and had to stop our hike because of darkness. We are DEFINITELY going back next Saturday, Jan 19. We will be leaving Santa Maria at 1 P.M. and would like to have as many geocachers come along who like this kind of geocaching. The drive there is a fantastic drive on a rural country road. The hike itself is a maximum of 4 miles round trip depending on how far you are able to drive on Avenales Rd. If time permits, we will then drive another mile further up the road and proceed to check out our own Pine Ridge cache. This will require another round trip hike of 4.6 miles. We made it up in our 4 Runner that does NOT have 4 wheel drive. It did help that it has slightly higher clearance than standard passenger vehicles. Below is our log entry on the Operation Skywatch cache. Here is the webpage address: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...db-7e1886e056c8 Suebee and Pointsaljim left Santa Maria about 1/2 hour too late,(3:15 p.m.) and had to turn back 3/4 of a mile away from the cache because of darkness and because the critters, (wild foxes), were coming out and Riley the pup couldn't contain herself and wanted to chase them. The GPS said that we had 0.6 miles to go and I figure actual walking mileage left was probably 3/4 mile. The entire drive on Huasna Rd. was gorgeous, crisp, and clear! The gate is open, the creeks are easily passable, and we only saw one mountain biker once we crossed the wooden bridge a few miles past Huasna Township. About 11.2 miles beyond the wooden bridge we turned onto the Avenales Observation Rd and were only able to go about 0.4 miles before the road got too steep and rutted for our 4 Runner that is NOT 4 wheel drive. We pulled over and hiked for another 0.53 miles, elevation 2,709 ft.in this totally remote area has fantastic views in all directions before we decided to turn back for the reasons listed above. On the drive back we stopped to gaze at the stars which were so many in this area where there are NO city lights or other lights for that matter. We will be back next Saturday afternoon!!
  14. Yikes! 24-mile trip, eh? I'm guessing the kids and I won't be going on that li'l hike. Is a Jeep involved? L I'm not doing a 24 mile hike either! It's only a 5 - 6 mile HIKING round trip if we make sure that the gate is open. Maybe Suebee and I will take a drive out there on Friday afternoon to see if the gate is open and to assess the creek crossings
  15. I received this response from Camo Cacher in reply to an e-mail that I sent to him last night. I have not asked yet about the Terrain 5 Difficulty Rating. "The gate was open when I was up there last weekend. The only gate I came across was the one 24 miles in with No Trespassing welded on it. Do you think it will be closed because of the coming storm? Can you do me a favor if you make it up there before I do. Would you place a log book and pen in a ziploc bag and leave it at the What In The World cache. I came across this metal box by accident. I dont know what it is, but decided to make it a geocache also. If you know or can figure it out, please let me know." Camo Cacher The gate that Camo Cacher is referring to that is at 24 miles is the place to park. The gate at the wooden bridge is approximately 12 miles in, so we really need to make sure it is open or else we would be looking at a 24 mile round trip HIKING on the dirt road before we were even in the vicinity to begin the actually hiking on the trail.
  16. My Pine Ridge Cache would probably be doable for kids. It's about 2 3/8 mile one way with only a short section of semi-steep uphill. The (2) new caches by Camo Cacher are rated a Terrain 5 difficulty factor, so that could mean it's pretty difficult or maybe Camo Cacher just rated it a 5 due to the remoteness. I suggest we e-mail him for the answer.
  17. ATTENTION!!!! I want to know who wants to go with me to (2) new caches that have been planted by Camo Cacher way the heck up Huasna Canyon Rd. near my Pine Ridge View Cache. One is called Operation Skywatch and the other is What in the World. They were only planted about 3 weeks ago and have NOT been found yet. Also, we could go to my Pine Ridge View Cache which has only been visited once in 1 1/2 years. The biggest obstacle will probably be coordinating when the Forest Service Gate will be open just past the wooden Huasna Bridge....especially now that the major rains are starting. All of these caches are in way cool, way remote settings...This could be an AWESOME trip. From the Arroyo Village Grande Village it will take at least 1 hour of driving just to get to the parking spot. From there it will be hiking.
  18. BooBooBee and I will be meeting everyone at the Cerro Alto Trailhead at 9 a.m. on Saturday. We're stashing our bikes at the top before hand and peddling back down the trail after spending some time at top and along the ridge road, so we will be taking care of our own transportation. Looking forward to a good time!
  19. BooBooBee and I will definetely be there for the hike up to Cerro Alto from the Campground....we are mulling over the idea though of having our bikes stashed at the nearby ridge road and either riding the ridge road over to the 101 or maybe riding back down Cerro Alto.....I don't think she will have her kids or hubby if she does this option. We will keep you posted, but will definitely be hiking up Cerro Alto with the group.
  20. The 29th works for me, but not the 30th. Cerro Alto sounds fine.
  21. I'm thinking that the Cuesta Hike to Cerro Alto Campground sounds like a GREAT New Year's Eve Hike! Not too far out of the way, should be nice clear outstanding views of the Morros and Morro Rock. And I like the idea of doing it one way with the shuttle cars. The Huasna Rd. to Pine Ridge would be another nice hike, it's just that I can never get a straight answer from the Rangers as to whether the road is open beyond the wooden bridge.
  22. That sounds like a great idea. Now that I have my assignments for December I can tell you exactly what days would be good for me. Wednesday, the 19th and the last 2 weekends in December (i.e. 22, 23, 29, 30). So if y'all can fit into that narrow space, I'd love to join in, but if not, I'll be sad, but I'll live. I'm available for the last 2 weekends in December!
  23. I'd really like to do a group geocaching event...something that requires at least a 2 hour hike or a drive to some remote place that I'd normally be hesitant to go on my own....maybe to BooBooBee's 3 caches that are along Sierra Madre Rd. Last year on Dec 23, I got the place to myself, nice and cool weather and some fantastic sunset shots. Check out BooBooBee's "S"ky High Cache and "P"ining for Miranda for pics. I didn't have time to go for the other cache she has in the area. If not that, then maybe a mystery cache....
  24. I will be gone from Nov 20 - Dec 2. Other than that, any days except Sundays work for me: Week days from 4 P.M. on, all day on Saturdays.
  25. Miss Heck is hosting a Geocache Pizza Party in Orcutt on Friday, Oct 26 from 5 to 8 P.M. I plan on attending. Hope to see some Poison Oak Cachers! Here's the link http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...a4-ad906f21a2b6
