  1. I am not an experienced cacher, but I have taken it upon myself to check up on a couple of travel bugs and caches that have not been visited in a long time. One bug was listed as grabbed, but the people didn't log it out of the cache. I emailed them about it, and another cacher emailed back - they had gotten married and moved while waiting for the house to be built, and the bug was packed in a box somewhere. They said they would email the bug's owner and let them know. The bug had been re-issued already, but it was kinda' nice to know they hadn't dropped out of the hobby or anything.

The other was a DNF I had gotten, the owner hadn't been on in several months. I shot an email about the shrubbery being WELL pruned and cleaned, and something to the effect of, "Hope all is okay with you, we haven't met, but I see you haven't been on in a while so i thought i would send you a quick note. Blah Blah about the cache, and again, I hope you are out caching again soon. Maybe we will run into you sometime!" It was disabled a few days later with a note about the cleanup being TOO well done.

I think a whole lot of "subtle" is lost in an unemotional text post to someone. If there was a way to interject the sarcasm and snickers that go along with some of the emails and posts, it would sure be less prickly to those that are just a little over-sensitive...

  2. Welcome Evster!

OMG! You MUST read the Weasel guidebook!

Auntie, I had to read that out loud to my 11 year old, and we were both splitting and had organs falling out over that. We had seen a Pine Marten last year at Mt Shasta, and we like Fishers...

But I believe it is your dangerously humorous witty writing style that I appreciate the most.

Thanks for the great start for the day!

  3. Just wait until you hit the $ store and other bargain swag places...

Can you believe that I managed to spend 35$ in the $ store, and another 40$ or so in Wallyworld, and neither bag was larger than a shoebox? I found some cool goodies though!

  4. SYLLABICATION: gew·gaw

    PRONUNCIATION: gyōō-gô, gōō-gô

VARIANT FORMS: also gee·gaw (jē-, gē-)

NOUN: A decorative trinket; a bauble.

    ETYMOLOGY: Middle English giuegaue.

I love the history of words, especially those things that "grandma always used to say"...

  5. Bragman, "I have found seven-hundred-thousand caches in one weekend!"

You, "How cool, any that I have found?"

Bragman, "Well, just yesterday I got one of those out by the golf course..."

You, "Neat! I will have to find your log and see what you wrote. I really like reading people's comments. You DO log them at the cache don't you? Because if you don't, your online post may get deleted."

    Bragman, "Hem, haw, stammer..."

    You, "I thought so!"

There are MANY ways to catch him up in his fantasy world. Pick some of the ones he has supposedly found, find them yourself. Mention to him that unless he really signs the log in the cache, he isn't legit.

    (BS stands for "Big-Stupid"...?)

  6. Actually my reference to "tiny feature request" was more along the lines that I thought few would care about the idea.

Since few have responded to it, I was right.

I guessed it would be some kind of programming snarl, and I DON'T take that lightly, trust me. But like Thorny1 mentioned, I don't really need the reviewer's name, but the owner's name would be nice.

Still, it is just a thought... <_<

  7. PQ's will allow you to see any number (up to 500) of caches to your specific choices. Don't like micros? Exclude them from your search.

Prefer to only go to terrain/difficulties of 1 or less? Set it up that way.

Want to download 20 or so caches faster than one at a blinking time? There's the reasons for PQ's.

I have several set up for the area around my cousin's house. She caches with me as often as possible. She also will be caching around the college where she is taking a "career-change" course lineup. That is about 40 miles away from home, so we have another 500 form there. 500 from her house isn't including the ones in the hills where her mother lives, so we set up another one from there. I can set up at least 5 in Fresno, based on zip codes of the areas I want to cache that day.

Since I also have GSAK (thanks Clyde, Robert!) I just sort or filter what I want ot do that particular day, and off I go. PQ's are updated every week the day before I plan to go...

They allow you to receive a select group of caches based on your search requests, either by Zip, coordinates or waypoint.

    I LOVE those Pocket Queries!

  8. Well, I have a local individual who is a 6-degree friend in a way...so I am always looking for his new ones to do first. There were about 15 or so new caches in the last week and I had no idea which of these were (if any) his, until I went online (dialup...dagnabbit! Takes 4EVER!!!) to see what he has done. For those who can read the emails on the cells but not the actual website...again...this could be an advantage.

I am in an area where there is great distance between towns and people, so knowing this bit of info could assist in a FTF for me!

  9. I recommend an older monochrome Palm like my Palm M500.

It is much easier to read in bright sunlight than the color units.

Pocket Queries are the best thing since Geocaching itself. :D

Cachemate on the Palm works very well. I Export the data for the Palm from GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife). :)

    Exactly.

I asked some of the same things, and these same folks "showed me the light"...

    Palm M500 on eBay...

Premium (gives you more info and lots easier methods of getting it) membership

GSAK (to take all that info and work it however you need - then load it to what you have)

Cachemate (for the Palm - so you can "read all about it!")

    <smug look>Wonderful! :D

  10. I mentioned this before, just because I have a few really great cachers in the area and I like to see what they have just listed. I get the new notification, and there were quite a few over the last week or so. But unless I go to each one on the PC and look it up, I can't tell whose cache it is. Another few people responded that that would be a great little extra for them also - they get the email notifications via cell phone, and a cache by "that certain person" would be more desirable to jump on.

It is probably not a large enough idea for most here, but I thought I would stick it out there again. We get a lot of info about the new caches in the email notifications, but the cache owner's ID would be nice too. :D

  11. I agree (I think) with the request. I liked some of the caches well enough to see who else has been able to find them so far. I go to my profile list and just check each one of the few and see if the date has changed. It would be nice to have more than 20 listed per page though (like my mere 48 is enough to request that, but others have WAY more than I do...) or in my case I guess I could just bookmark those favorites and have them PQ's each week to read those posts...

  12. The micros were have found have all been where they shouldn't be. Magnetic key-holders stick up under things where you wouldn't think to look. Sometimes the crazy things are not "Down", but up on a surface that perhaps the hider was tall and you are short and don't look at that point. Relatives of mine are only about 5'2", and had a hard time seeing one that was eye-level for me, 5'11". Standing back and just observing a while often helps. Especially in the parking lots.

  13. I got the software with my 600, used it a while, and then when I wanted to view the terrain around some caches I had chosen, I couldn't get them to mesh with the TOPO 3-d. Everyone here said, "GSAK!" and I haven't looked back!

Geocache Manager is fine. But for more detailed sorting, updating, logging...

    GSAK!

  14. Like Dr said, the cable connection is screwy. It looks like it should run off the top of the unit, yet it should run down the back so the thing sits on your table all sideways.

Also, (I have a 600) the thing should be off when you attach the USB, and mine will come up in "use" format (running, like I am taking out to cache a while) when I turn it on. Sometimes that has affected whether or not stuff will load to it. You may have to tell it to FILE TRANSFER ONLY for the USB hookup, rather than EXTERNAL POWER ONLY. That is (the long way) under MENU, ADVANCED SETTINGS, COMMUNICATION.

Also, when you are uploading to the unit, make sure you specify the folder where the info needs to go. I use a folder on my SD card that reflects the area I am going to caching in.

The next step (dang! TOO many of those steps!) is to make that folder/file the ACTIVE geocache file in your preferences.

MENU, PREFERENCES,ACTIVE MAP SETUP and scroll down to geocache file, browse 'till you find the one you want and make it active. THEN you should be good to go.

  15. FILE

    LOAD GPX/LOC FILE

Choose the path where the file is located. All the way down to the .gpx file, which should show up as a red/white GSAK icon.

I sometimes have a hard time remembering where I put stuff once I unload/unzip/install things, so make sure you are downloading these from your PQ email into a folder you will remember...GSAK will bring up each time the path of the last .gpx that you loaded, so you can return to the correct folder for the PQs.

    Hope that helps.

  16. Good for you.

Once you find all in that small circle around you, you will have to venture further and further away. It will consume you until you finally move out of contact with the "others". Remember to take water and some kind of space-packet food, just in case you wander too far to return in time...

    Have fun!

  17. My hometown is only 10,000. The place I was born is NOW at 40, 000. The nearest crime-ridden, Walmart invaded, gang-centered city is 400,000. Of course I love that city, used to live in it. But I think you understand my point.

There is something rewarding about being self-sufficient in the most basic of needs. You should have seen my quite smug joy at being able to remove (without flooding the house!) an old kitchen faucet and replace it with a really neat sleek new one. Without hubby's help. Without making a mess. WITH my 5 year old's help.

I can't imagine doing a "Ted or Alive" kind of thing, catching and killing my own meat. And yet I remember my grandmother (5' tall lady) all nonchalont about wringing the chicken's neck. (eww! ) But for some reason I admire that ability.

  18. While I personally wouldn't do it (I also can't handle actually shooting something like hunting hubby does) I think it is really neat that you have such a remote lifestyle. Big cities have wildlife, and I think it is more scary! I would like to think that I could adapt quite well to something like that if I were put in that kind of environment. I won't kill the animal, but I sure help skin and process it.

I think there was something a while back as flak for a Girl Scout troop who made a badge of their own (Troop and council have "Our Own" badges they can make) pertaining to the lifestyle they have, and it invloved trapping. If it is a way of life (heritage) and necessity, I think it is wonderful to keep that "tradition" going.
