  1. Ish. Alviso, Ca. Local bay area residence have always joked about having to live there or how bad it is to live there because it's always been a dump. Plus the natural stinkiness of the bay always ended up on the south shore at Alviso. As a kid we used to go out to the Alviso ghost town (old hunting lodge) and tromp around in the mud and gunk. Probably why one of my kids is disabled. -sigh-

  2. I kind of feel the same way. I originally bought my GPS for hiking and learned about geocaching from the Garmin site. I've been hiking, backpacking in some very remote areas for 30 years without a GPS. Dakota 20 + 24K map + a premium account here, and I'm wondering if I'll still like geocaching in 3-4 months plus I don't really need a GPS for hiking. $400+ for a novelty?

    Time will tell.

  3. To get around the creepy male aspect at the playground I take my 11 daughter with me. If someone needs to crawl around a play structures I just give her the directions and sit on the bench with the other parents.

But yeah, don't put them nears schools. If you fail to understand why then have a couple kids. It will become painfully clear to you. ;)

  4. Similarly, if somebody is so petty that they feel theft/destruction of somebody else's cache is an equal and appropriate action to online log deletion, they shouldn't feel too surprised when the rest of their local caching community starts giving them the cold shoulder or their own caches come up missing.

Reap what you sow, and all that.

You do understand it could go either way. A petty act followed by another petty act.

Plus how would anybody know who destroyed it?

  5. If I legitimately found it, didn't sign, and you delete my log, even after I prove that I have found it, I will return, and delete your cache. Very simple.

So far, I have only had to threaten this, not actually do.

Yes, yes, I know I am hostile, evil, should go away, not play the game, yada yada yada. Try and make me.

    Wow.

I have to agree with him. Unless someone is really, really competing for top ranking then it's spiteful, mean, and petty to delete a log entry. If someone acts petty and then it's returned upon them they shouldn't be surprised.

  6. Wow! I'm really surprised at the negative responses.

Different people play the game differently. I can't speak for the original poster, but if he isn't concerned with signing the log, I would be surprised if he is concerned with the cache owner deleting an online log. The enjoyment may simply be the hunt for the cache.

I don't understand why this seems to upset some people.

Because human behavior is to knock someone down to boost their relative standing. In this case it's to disqualify someone's finds. Valid or otherwise. Or maybe simply because people feel that they have to play by the rules so other do also. Who likes it when they're in 5mph traffic on the freeway and somebody drives down the shoulder and then cuts in. Why do they not have to play by the rules?

On signing: Do lame caches deserve to be signed. I feel I deserve to log a find because I made an effort to find it. I've still been out caching on my bum leg. However the cache owner made almost no effort placing a leaky film canister, cigar tube, etc with a wet log. Thank you for the cache you put some effort into, but lame cache = no signing.

  7. Are you kidding me. I tore my calf muscle last Saturday running up a 5' high dirt incline going to a cache. I could hardly walk for a week. Still limping. It will take 4 weeks before I can go hiking again. Sucks. Doctor said I'm not old yet (43) but I need to stop acting like I'm 20. This is the 4th injury in 2 years.

  8. Except that time you set your GPS on the very well camo'd cache.
Or when you pick up the camouflaged cache and use it as a tool to search for the cache...

    hahaha.

The opposite of always looking on the ground is true too. I was lead to a sculpture and DNF. I was obsessed with looking way up high for about 10 minutes. Later I read the the hint and it implied it was on the ground.

  9. Where to...

    then coordinates...

This is how I've been doing it but I've run into something odd I haven't quite figured out.

Where To and enter the coords as stated above.

Then when I go to Waypoint Manager I have a new waypoint called "Coordinates...". I edit this waypoint and rename it to something useful. If I later start the process over with Where To and then go to Waypoint Manager the previous waypoint is gone even though I changed the name.

  10. I think it's more about the person doing it than what is being done. To some people everything is a competitive sport and their objective is to beat you even if you're not trying to compete. eg commuting to work and you didn't see that guy pass you and the joy he had when he won. Didn't you know driving is a race. To some nothing is a sport. The actual activity/sport/race/competition is irrelevant.

My personal opinion is this is a casual activity. Finds are to be shared and enjoyed by all. Making it into a sport would just ruin it. But I feel that way about a lot of things.
