  1. I currently have the 60C, and really like it. However, if you plan on going for long road trips, the 60cx may be worth another look. I found it a bit of a hassle on my last trip to have to pull out my laptop and 60c and download the next day's maps. I travelled to California, and found that I could only get about a couple days worth of travelling loaded at a time, because the area's map data was so "dense". But, if long road trips aren't in your future, the 60C will save you some cash.
  2. 1 dog (Yorkie) and 1 bird (Green-Cheeked Conure). Neither one go with me. Good luck. And congrats on succesfully finding a way to get data for your project.
  3. Welcome Kunal. I've also got the 60C, and really like the City Select North America software. I purchased it as a package with an auto mount kit. I don't have any experience with the topo maps, because I looked at some samples for my area, and was not impressed with the detail. In case you haven't already found it, here is a site with a lot of good info: http://home.houston.rr.com/gpsr/ Have fun!
  4. One of the drawbacks for Geocache use, at least for me, is the built in battery. With only 4 - 8 hours, if someone wants go out for a day of geocaching, it will have to be a short day. But, with that said, if this was available a few months ago, I probably would have got this rather than my 60C. Hopefully, in the future we'll have a new handheld with all these bells and whistles.
  5. Wow, sounds like you are doing all the right things. Have you checked the cable and the pins? I know there is some kind of reset you can do the 60C during power-up. I don't know what it is, but you can find it here somewhere on the forum. Good luck
  6. Thanks all. The "official" Garmin method looked like it only works with a serial cable, which I did not have so I couldn't test. And it sounds like there is no overriding reason why I should start using that method and stop using the 162/168 method.
  7. Just curious about the 2 options for handling the tides on the 60C. The unofficial method is to download the 162/168 maps to Mapsource, thru which you can use like (and with) any other map. The Garmin official method is to download and run a program that starts with D00590XA... This install creates another executable, which I assume downloads the original tide maps that your Garmin shipped with. I also assume that when you run this, if you have any maps loaded on your unit, they will be wiped out. Has anyone tried the official Garmin method, and if so is there any reason to use it instead of the 162/168 maps? Thanks
  8. Thank you for this info! I had always wanted a way to stop the routing from going to a toll road. I thought I had been on every screen, but had missed the one with the routing preferences. This is great!
  9. I've got a question on the tides/marine maps. I know there are 2 different ways to get this back on the 60C(S); either download the 162/168 Tides to MapSource; or use the Garmin method of downloading and running the D00590XA-MarinePOIDatabase. If you use the 162/168 Tides, they show up like any other map in Mapsource, so you can download them along with any other maps to your unit, and they happily co-exist. The Garmin solution appears to be a stand-alone application. I THINK that using the official Garmin method will result in wiping out any City Select maps you have, so your 60CS is back to original condition. Not very useful. I have not tried this method yet, so was wondering if anyone else had. If my assumption is correct, I see no reason to use Garmin's solution, because I have very little use, other than curiousity, for the tide info. However, if Garmin's solution does not wipe out any existing maps, then I guess I'll go that way, so I can be "official".
  10. Well. I experimented with deleting the files from the version 6 folder, and so far so good. I haven't tried downloading to the unit and using the V7 maps, but my trial delete (actually just moved the files in the V6 folder to a backup folder) worked OK when I went into Mapsource - I just clicked on the V7 dropdown, and the maps were there. Next I'll just delete the renamed version 6 folder. Worst case is if I have to re-install version 6 and version 7, but well worth it if I can get back 1.2 GB.
  11. Ok, so are you saying that instead of removing the program via the add/remove programs option in control panel, that you just delete the files under the C:\Program Files\Garmin\CSNA6 folder? And, if you get tired of the dropdown for V6 showing up in Mapsource, that you can just remove the Registry Entries? Next question - is there any reason to keep the 1.2 GB of version 6 maps? I guess if you have a lot of stuff saved, based on the old maps then it might be worth saving - but if not, why save it? Thanks
  12. I finally got thru to Garmin, after one unsuccessful 30+ minute hold (had to leave) and then another successful 30 minute hold. The rep gave me the unlock code with no hassle; said that the initial rep should have just generated the code for me back then instead of putting a comment on my record that I was entitled to the upgrade (maybe they did not have unlock codes for Version 7 back then?) Anyway, no problem with the unlock, other than a long wait time. Concerning uninstalling version 6, the rep told me that it needed to stay out there for version 7 to work. Sounds like he may have been incorrect based on some prior posts, so I'll be looking at that in the coming days.
  13. That was what I was thinking as well. Requires a person to override; still needs those final set of eyes to approve it. Hopefully I get someone who is as "forgiving" as the first person who approved it.
  14. I contacted Garmin several weeks ago about missing the cutoff for a free upgrade by a few days, and they said I was all set with an override. So I received my DVD today, and went thru the unlock process. And the wizard informed me that I was entitled to an upgrade, for the upgrade price of $75. What happened to my free upgrade? It's after hours at Garmin, so this will have to wait till tomorrow sometime. Until then, anyone have a similar experience?
  15. I know I've seen this covered, probably in this thread, but trying to find that is becoming next to impossible. So I'll go by memory, and also point to another webpage. If I remember correctly, all you need to do from Mapsource is to select both the area from the topo map, and from City Select (or whatever you are using). Then load them both to the 60c(s). As far as using them on the 60c(s), there is a way to toggle between them, but I don't remember the details on that. This may also help: http://home.houston.rr.com/gpsr/
  16. Thanks all! This was pretty much as I had remembered (nothing available). However, with my recent finds of maps that say they were compatible, I thought I'd check. And yes, I agree, these companies need to be more specific when they say they are compatible. I remember seeing some folks say they bought some mapping software because they saw it was compatible, only to find that it really does not work as they imagined. Oh well, at least I live in Florida. I'm guessing that even with good topo maps, they probably are mostly useless, except for showing rivers.
  17. Yes that is a shame. So, my next question. I really like the street maps from Garmin. But, the Garmin topo map doesn't have much detail unless you get the Parks version, and that version doesn't work for me. Are there any other topo mapping programs available that allow you to download the maps to the 60C? I have seen other software that list the 60C as a compatible unit, but is that just so you can use the 60C as an attached GPSr so you can hook the 60C up to a laptop and use it that way? Not too useful for geocaching...
  18. Do I understand this correctly - If you get the NG TOPO map for your state. Then buy the 3D Update. Now you can use the NG State TOPO map on the 60C? If so, then I can get some topo maps for the 60C that are more detailed than the ones from Garmin?
  19. I bought from: http://www.nwactivegear.com/ Had a pretty good price, a good rating, and some nice packages.
  20. I called Garmin, and explained that I had unlocked about 10 days earlier than the cut-off date. The person there was very friendly, and said they had a little wiggle room with the date, so I ended up getting it for free. So don't be afraid to call and plead your case.
  21. Sorry, thought of (I hope) one last thing. Make sure you update the Palm Desktop software (which runs on the PC). I used the software that shipped with the unit, and it appeared to lock up on a regular basis when downloading the cache waypoints into Cachemate (either that or it was so slow I gave up). I downloaded and installed the latest appropriate software from the Palm website, and it has not failed when downloading since then.
  22. How are you downloading the waypoints to the 60C? Are you using GSAK? If so, there is an option on what goes into the waypoint name. This option screen is displayed each time you download to the GPS. Just change the waypoint name from %code to whatever you want. Can't help you if you aren't using GSAK.
  23. Take a look about half way down the page at this site: http://home.houston.rr.com/gpsr/#Waypoints Lots of good 60C(S) info here! (Sorry - must of hit enter twice)

  25. One more thing - you'll probably want to invest in a case and screen protectors. I went to the local retailers, and Radio Shack was by far the cheapest. The store I went to had much of their PDA related stuff on clearance. I got the screen protectors for about a buck, some extras stylus for a buck or two, and if I remember the case was about $5.
