  1. Is there any problem placing caches (with owners agreement) at family friendly attractions which have a free entry charge, but which are only open daytime? I am being allowed to place a large box cache in a built up urban area at a family place which is a charity and doesnt charge admission. Is that going to be okay do you know?
  2. Hi there, is this the right forum to post in? Are new cache mods/admins able to make exceptions to the 160m rule if there is a good enough reason to do so? We are in an urban area with few locations to place caches, almost all are nanos or very small. I have been given opportunity to place a container cache on the site of a family attraction (free admission). Only problem is there is already a cache at a nearby church/park about 75m away. This would not bother cachers one bit as both locations are different, but I wondered if it would be allowed? Thanks
  3. Hi again Just wanted to update and thank everyone who helped me out here. Also might help anyone else searching for same thing later. Was very easy, only took about 10 mins even though I didnt know what I was doing!! Downloaded GSAK. Opened my cache and dash p query in GSAK Did a "global replace" of cache type to earth cache Exported to GPS Did another normal p query but excluded all cache and dashes and stuck it on the GPS Now we have exacty what we want, so thank you.
  4. OP can you tempt any of your family members out with you? What do they like? Maybe offer a cup of tea or something to persuade them?
  5. so, could we use this software to assign a different coloured icon foir example to cache and dashes instead of the standard green? this would totally solve the problem. I read a thread once about all these icons you could use but it all went way over my head!!!
  6. yes exactly,we want all the normal caches on there, plus easily identifiable cache and dashes for when on the road at work what is GSAQ please and how does it work? thanks
  7. We have a Garmin Oregon 450 and premium membership. We have downloaded caches as a pq with no problem. But now we want to download caches with a different (but overlapping) specification (cache n dash in wider radius of home) whilst being able to easily identify which of the caches shown on the gps are from the 2nd cache n dash pq and which are from the first (all caches in 25 mile radius). We had assumed that you would be able to select one "overlay"/pq or the other on the garmin but can wqork out how to do it? Any ideas please or is this not the way pqs work? We definitely dont want to keep deleting cache n dash and replacding it with standard pq over and over again as we dont know ahead of time which we will want on which day. Thanks
  8. I! - How do you think you would have fared on this nano if you had NOt read the rest of this thread but HAD read my slightly more detailed clue now on the cache page?
  9. Out of interest only then, how come some cachers do not use the description when caching? I took trouble to include a detailed description as I saw that some cachers aren't happy if a decent description is not provided. Also for us, the description (and any small clues it contains) are all part of the caching experience. I agree there should be a nano category.
  10. well chaos you would be most welcome as you could put an end to the string of dnfs!!!!!
  11. Dont know how to quote yet, but about the length of time a search takes, to get a "2" difficulty it says up to 30 minutes searching, which this nano doesnt need. Then again, I gave it a 1 as I thought it was fairly obvious (I would) with coords and clues. So have changed to 1.5 and added a little to the clue about it being low down. Hopefully that will be enough. Thanks everyone, helpful to get a wider perspective on things when theyre your own caches.
  12. Thank you all. It is a magnetic nano (as it says on cache page) therefore it is on the railings in the photo. The coordinates are spot on as it it is on the bottom rail to the left of the leafy lime tree pictured on the right of that google maps pic (thanks for that). It isnt at all sneaky or anything, just a normal nano (but I have looked for nanos and could almost swear they werent there one day and were the next!!). I didnt intend for it to be that hard, but neither did I intend to tell exactly where it is. The tree clue was to help narrow down which section of railing it would be on. If a cacher ran their hands round all railings near a couple of trees it would take 5 mins max to find it. Do you think I still need to update clue and or difficulty? Or is it okay?
  13. GC2GRGY It is early days but would appreciate advice on how I should proceed here. My cache is part of a series and is actually a rather easy find. Coordinates are good i think as we averaged the waymarks and first 3 cachers found it. But now it has started to get a string of dnfs so i think we will continue to get more. We have been back and checked twice and it is still in place, I think it really is quite a straightforward one (but I know you can stare a nano in the face and still not see it!!!). I THINK I can just leave the cache page as it is and post the odd note to confirm it is still in place as I am fairly sure if a cacher hunted for 15 or 20 minutes they would get it. I havent posted a detailed clue for this one (ie told cachers exactly where it is) as I dont want to since I think it can sometimes spoil the fun. What do you think? Am I OK to leave it as it is? Do my notes confirming that the cache is still there come up on PQs or do they just get all the dnfs? Thanks
  14. Could anyone please direct me towards the email or pm box for the reviewer for south west of england? many thanks.
  15. Thanks everyone. Have scrapped the idea of putting screws in tree in the park, impossible to find anyone to give permission and I agree it's not appropriate for me to do it without permission. Interestingly I did know who to ask at a local beaty spot and the ranger there said the same as the ranger on this thread, not to do it due to chainsaw issues if the tree ever needed felling many years into the future.
  16. Thanks, am glad I asked. Our council has given blanket permission for caches. No dead trees there unfortunately. In case I cant find out where to get permission from, any other ideas about how such a cache would be secured normally? Cache has a small ring on end of it which is why I was thinking of hook.
  17. Just wondered whether you thought this was appropriate or not? Am thinking of screwing a small hook (like you use to put up net curtains) into a tree in a local park. It is not a nature reserve or rare habitat or anything. Almost seems like i shouldnt as am doing something to the tree, but on the other hand it is very minor compared with natural and innocent damage by children, birds, squirrels etc. If you think its not the best idea then any ideas how i could attach a small cache to tree (head height) where the cache is easily removeable from the tree? thanks
  18. If its of any help and if you didnt already know, I think it may actually be illegal to disturb dormouse boxes. Not sure whether (like newts) this would also include disturbing the surrounding habitat (ie cachers caching in the nearby vicinity)
  19. I read in the small print that with an orange panther package there is a charge or 4p or 6p or something EVERY time you get a gps fix - this was in the context of their mapping on the handset. Is this right? If you get an android phone on orange network and use google maps, will you get charged for every gps fix? If not, is it easy to switch off their service (or whatever you have to do to it) to NOT get charged? Thanks
  20. arrgghh - I already posted there and was advised to put it here!!
  21. Hi there - I just bumped into this thread and wondered if you have any more info about the clent hills trails? Looked on the NT website for clent hills and there isnt really much info there. many thanks
  22. Hi all. Sorry for double post, I put this somewhere else and was very kindly directed over here. We are new geocachers and coincidently we have to take out a brand new mobile contract right now. So we are thinking of getting a smartphone with a good data bundle and meeting our other phone needs. This will allow us to start out geocaching without extra cash outlay on a decent handheld gps for now. My question is, are they all much the same with regard to quality of GPS guidance/chip included in the phone? Also, if you have a maps/navigation application, will they all work pretty much as well and smoothly for displaying caches and caching? Any that stand out as terrible or great? We are looking to be using it for navigation using maps/satelite pics so thinking of google maps on android. Had in mind the HTC Desire Z (has a keyboard, cant stand trying to type on a touch screen). Or maybe HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S We know nothing really about smartphones but this seems to be a new model with latest software (less bugs?), qwerty keyboard and big screen. So please tell me about gps and mapping capabilities of smartphones (NOT compared with GPSs please)! Thank you
