  1. Perhaps we should stop using tupperware boxes and use something less likely to be mistaken as a terrorist device: Since i started caching i can almost always guarantee to find one or more of the following near the cache, however urban or remote: > Stella Artois can > Mcdonalds cup > Vodka bottle > Take away food container > Sandwich wrapper All seem to survive indefinitely in the open and cause no alarm whatsoever - the perfect cache containers!! Just joking - thanks to all who are trying so hard to solve this. I really feel it's the communication element that is crucial - if the police can contact the cache owner simply and easily in the event of a scare the escalation can be stopped. I also believe that acting "stealthily" when urban caching doesn't necessarily mean acting "suspiciously" - it needs a bit of planning and forethought when you're at the cache site. Better to walk away sometimes when the site is impossibly busy. Steve
  2. Just seen the BBC coverage of this. I don't think it presented geocaching in a very positive light. Ironic that a few weeks ago they were running a story on geocaching with presenter and gang of smiling kids happily caching and placing their own BBC cache, stressing what a great family activity it was. I thought the comment by the police that it would be helpful if cachers sent them the location of their cache, picture etc was a bit odd - what would they do with them all?? It was disappointing that after all this the policeman interviewed seemed to have no knowledge they could just look online and see all of them anyway. At least it has raised awareness of geocaching within the police and security forces i guess.
  3. I'd agree with the comments about the etrex h 'yellow'. Have been 'caching for six months and it's been fine. Sure i'd like a more sophisticated unit and move up to paperless caching but frankly the etrex is fine at giving you basics - direction and distance to go to the cache. No maps needed and we just print out the cache details before we set off. I got mine in a sale at Go Outdoors for a staggering £50 - cheaper than some fetch on ebay. It's worth checking Argos, Amazon etc too. It's a lot of technology for not much money.
  4. Hi We live near Christchurch too. Have been geocaching since September 2010 and have done about 70 so far - many around Christchurch, Bournemouth and New Milton. Haven't done any New Forest ones yet but there are several really good ones around Christchurch and Hengistbury Head with some stunning views, and you are almost guaranteed to visit really pretty spots right on the doorstep you never knew existed. We've been using a basic Etrex H GPS but the iphone should be good. Good hunting!
