  1. If you are talking about permanent tree stands, which are illegal, I see old ones that are obviously in disrepair, but nothing new. I do occasionally find temporary stands chained to trees far back off the roads. That saves the owners having to carry them in every day they go hunting.
  2. Yep, it took a little time but eventually I got the unlock code. Actually I registered it to do the right thing. Once I sent the money I didn't really care that much about the code. The software is still functional, just a few nag screens.
  3. Make sure your coordinate format is the same as the one used by the website. i.e. hdd mm.mmm (degrees and decimal minutes). Also, if possible, use a cable to download the coordinates. It avoids many typing mistakes.
  4. If your Explorist 400 is telling you you are within 15 feet in moderate tree cover you should put the unit away and start looking for hiding spots for the cache. I am on my third Garmin GPSr and that doesn't sound like bad performance to me. You are going to get that kind of variation as the unit gets a lock on various satellite combinations, especially under difficult reception conditions. Just my $0.02, yrmv.
  5. Download your waypoints to MapSource. The waypoints tab will indicate how many waypoints were downloaded.
  6. You are not the first owner to discover this in their new unit. You got lucky.
  7. The maps for your GPSr, for sure. If you really are finding v6 of CS for sale, you would be eligible for a free upgrade since you purchased it after the release of v7. If you get a cheap PDA there are free (or very inexpensive) alternatives to the GSAK/Cachemate combo. I use GPX Spinner (about $14.00, but usable for free with nag screens) and Sunrise desktop (freeware). Premium membership is really a necessity so you can get pocket queries.
  8. Even without WAAS correction, if there are sufficient numbers of satellites visible to the GPSr you can easily get a very good estimated position error. This is not the same thing as accuracy, although they are related. EPE is an estimate of accuracy determined by some formula written by Garmin. Right now the WAAS satellite (#35) we used to have in the East has been moved to the West and the new ones in the East are in testing mode. They are available at times, not at others, so sometimes you will have a WAAS correction, sometimes not. I used the original basic Etrex model which was not WAAS enabled. It worked fine for finding geocaches and had excellent EPE at times. edit for speeling
  9. I use your GPX Spinner (duly registered), but I have switched to SunriseXP as the Plucker file generator. I was having problems with Plucker Desktop locking up, never have had the problem with Sunrise Desktop or SunriseXP. Just something you might want to give a look at.
  10. The link you posted didn't work for me. Try this one.
  11. After you mark the cache as "found" in the geocaching mode, the newer Garmin models will put the found cache on the calendar for the day it was found. When you get home, open the calendar, click on the day and there is a list of the found caches.
  12. I have purchased hunting licenses for 45 years and have been a Hunter Safety Instructor. I always post links to the Game Lands Regulations on my caches which are on Game Lands. I know the laws and obey them. You got permission when none was previously required. Stirring up a governmental beauracracy is never a good thing. I am done with this. Hopefully it will play out OK.
  13. Yes. Nothing good will come of this. We had no rules from the Game Commission for the use of Game Lands for caching, we still have no rules. On the other hand, we now have PGC officers aware of geocaching. Judging by the phone conversation you quoted, don't you think they will now be more aware of our game, if nothing more than to find something wrong and make their point with the supervisor? It's pretty obvious they have a negative predisposition toward geocaching.
  14. EXACTLY! I've had a sick feeling about where this is heading since the original post.
  15. I agree with Brian, sort of. Couldn't you just build your PQ to not send you the type of caches that you don't like? No, you cannot build a pocket query to not send you the type of cache you don't like. In my area it has become common for the owner to not specify the container size. I suspect this is to defeat this very strategy. I brought this up in a thread recently as a reason to make the size field a mandatory entry.
  16. Well, I will give this a shot. Someone will probably come along later with a more elegant answer. WGS-84 is map datum, I think it is World Geologic Survey, 1984. You want to make sure the datum set in the GPSr is the same as the map datum of the source of your coordinates or your position will be off. WGS-84 is the datum used by Geocaching.com and what you normally would want to use with your GPSr when you download coordinates from the site. No coordinate conversion is necessary, use the coordinates as posted on the cache pages.
  17. Plucker never crashed my TX, but Plucker Desktop was locking up on me (just the app, not the PC). I switched to Sunrise Desktop (SunriseXP, actually). Faster and no lockups. I still use Plucker on the TX. You may be correct about a bad file sent from the desktop.
  18. Could I ask where you obtained your MCX connector? With shipping, buying one online from the sources I found is almost as much as a new antenna!
  19. Google! - "bluetooth gps" You will see many bluetooth GPS units. Most have the SirfIII chipset (desirable). Read about features and prices. I have generally heard good comments about their reception.
  20. As a hint? Looking at a clock face, anything "quarter till" is 180 degrees. It might be a bearing. It's the use of two L's that is interesting to me. Hmmm..... Uh (again)... no,quarter till is 270 degrees or west. 180 is south.
  21. I don't own one, I was just trying to be helpful. My Palm TX is too expensive and too fragile to use as a GPS on the kinds of caches I do. It stays in the hard case until I need information about the cache. Does your Palm have bluetooth? That opens up your options greatly.

    Cache Size

I don't see your problem. It's helping you filter out caches you don't want to do. Removing the "unknown" options would actually make it less helpful for you. Some caches that are "unknown" are caches I wish to hunt, but most are not. I must exclude the ones I wish to hunt to filter out the ones I don't want to hunt. Please understand, this is not that big of a deal for me, but I don't see why it would be so onerous to require the owner to state the cache size. I think it is usually an oversight by the owner. Some may leave it as unknown intentionally, but in my area, at least, I have not seen where it is part of the challenge. The container normally described in the text of the cache page.
  23. Here's one for starters. Google for more.
