  1. The smoke can idea is the best I have seen so far. I would assume these are the agressive African bees, since this IS in Africa. They are not something to trifle with and behave very differently than our docile North American honey bees.
  2. What part of this isn't true for Groundspeak? It's a business I willingly support, but it is a business!
  3. Just to clarify: for all practical purposes, only Garmin brand maps can be uploaded to your GPSr. The mapping packages you quoted are for use on your PC. As stated by Miragee, the National Geographic State Series TOPO! package is a great resource for me. It is the scanned 1:24000 topo maps for your state. I use them for planning hunting trips and find them very useful - again, only on the PC, not the GPSr. You can transfer waypoints and tracks to and from these maps and your GPSr.
  4. No compass is much good if you don't know how to use it and don't have good maps of the area where you are using it. A compass only points to magnetic north, the rest is your skill in using that piece of information.
  5. If the cache hasn't been found and IF there are several DNF's with no response from the cache owner, it is the persons seeking the cache that have the ability to request an archive of the cache. The reviewer could then attempt to contact the owner to have the cache repaired/replaced. I agree with the others, some of the best caches go months without being found. Generally, because they aren't drive-up easy smiley faces.
  6. Welcome to the forums from another Pennsylvanian. I am sorry you encountered the reception you did, but I assure you he does not represent the average PA geocacher. If you are ever in the area let me know ahead of time, I'll show you some great mountain caching! You have gotten good advice from the others on your download problem, you should be good to go.
  7. You need to expect that relatively few people will attempt a multi and even fewer if it means most of a day used up for only one smiley face. It's the nature of the game today...
  8. Now you've gone and done it. I, for one, will be absolutely devastated if there are no more Wal-Mart parking lot micros.
  9. Thanks, you had to suck me into this. I see "retirement card" find claims for many of our local archived caches (Pennsylvania) from geocachers all over the eastern part of the country. What bothers me is I actually hiked and found many of these caches and signed the log. I can't relate to the geocacher who would think this is a reasonable way to play this game. I think this is even worse than the pocket caches, and yes, I think pocket caches are wrong.
  10. Hmmm... I didn't see the "ion" part when I checked, but then again, I only checked to make sure that my settings were still set to NiMH after updating. I just sent off an email to Garmin to see if they support using rechargable Li-Ion CR-V3 batteries in their units now... Hi, I don't know much about CR-V3 cells, but can you help me out with an answer to this:I have NiMH's with 2900 mAh. The highest CR-V3 I found at a web-shop has 1500 mAh. Wouldn't that mean that the GPS would only be online approx. 50% of the time than with my NiMH's, so e.g. only 10 hours instead of 20 ? If yes, what is the advantage of a Li-ION cell ? (My Ni-MH's work also very well in the cold). Thanks for any info, NZ Wow, where did you find 2900mAh NiMH batteries? the highest mAh I've heard of is 2650's! http://www.thomasdistributing.com/accupowe...e-batteries.htm
  11. Lot of good information on the Palm Support web site. Actually, I think this is your answer.
  12. You can manually place waypoints with the waypoints tool. You can manually place waypoints and alter the coordinates in the waypoints property dialogue box to the exact coordinates you need. You can download waypoints directly from your GPSr. As you said, you can import .gpx files.
  13. Yes, but check here for the compatibility list. It does say all USB devices. If you want the 1:24,000 maps you would have to buy them for each state in which you travel (at $90 - $100 each).
  14. Good luck in your search. I gave up trying to find my problem cache and switched to Sunrise and later to SunriseXP. You get the same thing on your PDA (Plucker files) and a desktop app that is fast and doesn't freeze.
  15. This one is different, no? I have both on my PC. Sunrise XP
  16. Yep, the exact same thing. I also finally switched to Sunrise (and later to SunriseXP). No more freezes and as Lasagna said, faster too.
  17. I will vouch for the 2500 Energizers. Never actually measured hours of use, but after several days of hiking/caching on the same set in my 76CS, I recharge them even though they still have half charge showing on the meter. (And I do always charge them in pairs.)
  18. I do something similar, but I dowload the tracks to National Geographic's TOPO! State Series maps. They offer a wide variety of track styles and it's way cool to see you trails laid out on a 24K topo map. The maps are pricey (each state set is about $90-100), but I have more fun with them than any of the other map sets I own.
  19. Have they made this where you can import your waypoints yet? Last time I checked you were limited to one at a time that you input manually. No, and the email I got said it wasn't in the plans. Thanks. I emailed them about 3 years ago with a request. In that time NG topo has become less geocaching friendly. Amazing. The way I get around the waypoint limitation is to convert them into Notes in the NG program on my PC. I relabel the Note to a simple letter like A B C etc for each waypoint. The Notes transfer into the PPC at the right coordinates and you can Go To. Why NG can transfer Notes and can't do waypoints itself is beyond me! Even without the waypoints, you'll still have your actual location on a 24k map. That's something you can't do with a regular GPS. When I use topo maps I am normally in rugged terrain. Just the kind of environment I would hate to subject my TX to. I would probably end up with the Palm in the hard case all the time, anyway. But it sounds like something fun to play with.
  20. Have they made this where you can import your waypoints yet? Last time I checked you were limited to one at a time that you input manually. No, and the email I got said it wasn't in the plans.
  21. You forgot religion. How's this to keep this thread going for another 2-3 pages? The Good Book says cruising is immoral. You can't find anything like that there about caching! If money is the root of all evil then why do they always pass the collection plate at chruches and temples? This is an incorrect quotation. It is "The love of money is the root of all evil". Nothing wrong with money, per se.
