  1. oh no.. klatch.. deleting such logs is not smart, now the history of who placed it, is lost,

or at least it is a bit harder to find out.

    <snip>

Now, really, how hard is it to click on "View Past Trackables" or click on the links to the trackables still in the cache? In addition, the owner gets a notification when the trackable is moved. A "bit harder" is worth the trade-off, IMHO.

  2. I've said it before I just love how people have these ideas on what features there should be before they even look to see if those things exist.

Yeah... That's REAL easy to know that you have to select "leaflet"! Not exactly intuitive!

Give the guy a break! He was just asking, and that IS what this forum is for, isn't it?. "How Do I....?"

    +1

  3. Hi

If this has been asked before, I apologise. I am new with PQs

I have constructed a PQ and downloaded it. It was perfect.

Then I wanted to make a second PQ, so I built a new one with new co-ords as the origin (30 miles from the first one),but when I previewed it, it had reverted to the area of the first PQ.

I seem to be unable to base a search around my home, as it keeps giving me a collection of caches from my first PQ.

I have tried deleteing and starting again, and I am getting the same problem.

    Any ideas?

    Is this a known glitch?

    Many Thanks in advance.

Make sure you have "By Coordinates" checked under the "From Origin" section when you enter the coordinates for the search, otherwise it will default to your home coordinates.

  4. What are your thoughts about having an event where the organizers collect geocaches around a specific location. Take them to the event location. Make the logs available for signing by the attendees. Then replace the caches once the event is over. It's a cache machine where the caches come to you. A reverse cache machine.

A debate in another topic get me thinking about this possibility when I reviewed the current finding guidelines. The only requirement appears to be signing the log.

I find myself wondering if the OP is just curious about our opinion or is actually considering holding such an event.

  5. I hate it when I reluctantly hunt a cache hidden by someone who's known only for lame micros under lamposts, but at least it'll be an easy smiley - and it ends up actually being a really cool walk in the woods to a beautiful location, and a really well hidden ammo can.

Yep, I can see that would be a real bummer. REALLY?

  6. I went to go upload some new caches into my (several year old) Garmin etrex Legend H today and for some reason it's being read as NOT detected. I uploaded the new drivers (several times), and have tried it on both my laptop (with windows 7) and my pc (with windows xp). It's plugged in and is getting power from the computer (it shows the little plug symbol letting me know it's plugged in). Any thoughts to what the problem is? The last time I uploaded any caches was the end of April and it worked fine. It's still working perfectly in every other way, just not registering as connected on geocaching.com AND on the Garmin website when it does it's test after installing the reader program.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks in advance! :)

    Try another cable.

  7. Hi everyone, I'm traveling to the UK soon to travel and geocache. I own a Garmin Etrek Legend H. I tried downloading a cache from the UK to see how many miles from my home (here in the U.S.) and it's not there. Does this mean my Garmin won't work in the U.K.?

Search by name, not closest. (Find/Geocache/menu/search by name) The UK is too far away to be found when searching for nearest caches.

  8. Exactly. It's not as if Garmin ever tried that . . . like allowing installation on a second GPSr for free.

Actually, you could load the old Non-NT version of CNNANT onto two devices.

Up to, and including, CN NT v8 there were two unlock codes available. The maps on the second unlocked unit could not be updated, however. I found that out the hard way.

  9. I must say that I do enjoy reading people's adventures when caching. When we started we weren't really sure what to say and "TFTC" seemed to fit the bill. Hopefully now we have developed a little of our own logging style. That said, if we are doing a series of 15+ caches round the woods there is only so much you can say. "We walked through the woods we looked for the cache, we found/did not find, we walked through the woods to the next cache." We could expand but we're also very wary about saying too much for fear of spoiling the hunt for someone else.

I will never understand how one can walk in the woods and not see something of interest - just walking on to the next geocache with blinders in place.

  10. I search caches with a Garmin eTrex H, and I have always entered the coordinates manually. This takes forever. If I get (or make) a data cable, and buy either a serial slot PCI-card or a serial-to-USB-adapter, will I be able to transfer coordinates to the device? And if I can, what software is required? I really don't enjoy spending an hour typing in coordinates before each trip.

Yes. The quickest and easiest is the "Send to GPS" button on each cache page. You will need to download and install Garmin Communicator (free). You can also click on the .loc or .gpx button to download the information to your PC and then use EasyGPS (also free) to send it to your GPS.

  11. I'm out geocaching the other day along a trail, which leads me to the top of a hill, where I thought the cache should be. I look at the etrex30 and no cache. I am set at 300 ft range. I continue along the trail, which leads me down the other side of the hill. I get to the bottom and the etex now shows the cache, back at the top, along the track I took. I follow it back up the hill and it takes me right to it. I,m 68 and it made me climb that hill twice.

Were you doing a goto to the waypoint? Prior to version 2.71 I had complete stickies along the lines of 100 meters or more...

I haven't been doing gotos. I just head out on the trail and expect the geocaches to be there on the map with multiple caches. Maybe I'll have to list them on a sheet of paper in the order they will be in and do a goto for each one, one at a time. I'll try that and see if I have better luck.

No need for the paper. Find/Geocaches, "find nearest".

  12. <snip>

Your job is to find out who owns/controls the property and obtain adequate permission to use it.

You'd think this applies to all parking lot caches, no?

Excuse me....... would you please be so kind as to show me where in the OP anybody said anything about a parking lot?

I see "old abandoned furniture center", I see "It's huge", but I must confess that I never saw that he mentioned a parking lot.

I was addressing the question as posed. I guess maybe you read that assumption into my response, eh?

A huge abandoned furniture center without a parking lot. That explains why they went out of business.

  13. Oh wow, it was the cord! I had a spare one laying around and decided to connect that one to my GOSmap 60CSx and it worked! Who would have thought...

I've read, but can't confirm, that Garmin brand USB cords are not wired the same as generic USB cords. I've had problems using other cords with my Garmins, but never had problems using a Garmin cord. Could be your GOSmap cord is wired the same way.

Not so. I've used my 76CSx(60CSx in a different case) with many different generic USB cords without incident. The newer generation of Garmin units may be different.

  14. How do I update my GPSmap 60CSx? I've done it before but can't remember what I did. I downloaded Garmin WebUpdater and fired it up. I then plugged the GPS device into the computer via USB and turned it on. Windows recognizes the USB connection. I then tell WebUpdater to find the device. It finds nothing. From what I recall, I thought I had to put the GPS device into a certain mode, but I can't find it or remember what I did...

Update what? If you mean the system software, it sounds like you tried to do it the correct way with WebUpdater. Try downloading a new USB driver from the Garmin site (Here). If you mean updating maps, you probably are thinking of mass storage mode (main menu/setup/interface), but a card reader would be much faster (if you have a microSD card installed).
