  1. During the early days, Project APE was quite the thing. Besides movie props I think some actually had a GPSr as swag. We were lucky to be #5 cacher to reach the original GCBA4 Return of the Planet of the Apes even after a several hour drive from PA to NY. I still have the coin and trading card.
  2. JackQuest

    VA?

I drove through Covington once, but most of the time I'm in and around Spotsylvania.
  3. Eagle Scout (2 palms) 1979 and in the process of reconnecting with local district, time to give back.
  4. zen moment, Toss up, the one I haven't hidden yet or the one I haven't found yet. Doesn't help you much for ideas though!
  5. Here's mine just a basic carabiner:
  6. Going through the same thing, I really just wanted to restore it but wanted it to be official (didn't want to do watchlist adoption), but that ownership policy trumps. So now we're in the 14 day notification waiting period. After 14 days with no contact, archive the old and place the new. Then everything is by the book. For what it is worth, If I were the OP I would toss that nano and walk up into the woods and place an ammo can!!
  7. Hate to jump on the band wagon, but container, container, container, because people will be people. I have been ammo can only, for mine. The lock n locks have peeked an interest so I just tried two but on stage caches not the final. The first hint of failure and they will be history. All items are in ziploc bags as a backup. The few disappointing caches I have found have all been plastic.
  8. You may also post this in your region forum. There may be a better chance of a local geo group seeing it. Up here our state parks have an ever growing gps based activity program.
  9. I try always to leave the cache in better shape than it was in when I found it. Extra swag, pencils or even a new log if needed. I'll remove true trash, unsafe or prohibited items and I have been surprised by the trash amount in recent finds. Broken items will usually get a log mention and left for the owner to decide.
  10. Ah grasshopper, I wish I could, the memory is the first to go, and I don't have much too say! Lost interest after relocating so add in a couple of years for a hiatus/geo-retirement. Working at a state park as the park system discovered gps fun rekindled the geoflame. Post count/cache stats, have never been my mission. I actually like hiding over finding and am kicking myself for not keeping all my original caches. Recently, there have just been a couple of threads that have sparked some neurons. Geostashing was before my time I think. The term sounds familiar. I just can't seem to remember the forum early on, maybe it was there and I just didn't know. Here is one for you, I think there may have been a time when there wasn't the cache review process. Just filled out the online form and bam it was published. Thank goodness that is now regulated. Then again maybe these little tidbits are just figments of an aging imagination.
  11. Agree, I have a Triton 400 and very rarely use VP because it usually leads to some sort of problem. Most of the time,I download gpx, import into natgeo TOPO and then export from TOPO to the Triton.
  12. Was there always a forum or did it start with a email discussion group?
  13. Interesting to see the old usernames. I'm trying to remember some of the other hot topics from days gone by. The first one that comes to mine was anything having to do with the data....who owns it, making it available to third parties etc. Then I think there was a lengthy thread,is geocaching a sport or an activity?
  14. Waypoint the truck and the track/backtrack feature and extra batteries. Because the next challenge will be getting lost and having the batteries go dead!
  15. Yepper this is what I also do. TOPO! v4.50 can import gpx files, download the gpx from gc.com, import the gpx into TOPO and then export it to the Triton. But I think you need v4.50 because there is a specific "Magellan Triton Import Export" menu item under the Handhelds menu. I always take a topo map with the gc waypoints marked with me during the hunt.
  16. UTM/WGS84 is my preference for everthing but caching. Then I switch to decimal lat/lon to conform to the masses. Manual land navigation with map, compass, UTM grid square and pace count.
  17. Definitely .50 cal preferred, then .30 cal but just yesterday I found a cache that was 20mm. It had a bunch of room. I'm going to get a couple of those. Then there was the A.P.E. cache that was a 120mm which was cool not sure how one stealthfully places that one!
  18. Same photo is used for this ebay listing: Ammo Can
  19. My caching is pretty simple and basic. I want a nice hike through the woods that ends with the chance to sit down without the worry of attracting an audience, water the dog, and sift through trinkets just to satisfy personal curiosity on what others seem worthy or interesting. Log reading used to be fun but seems to have dropped off.
  20. A multi-stage cache with any kind of distance is not going to get the volume of traffic. My multi-stage caches are straight forward go to location and get coordinates to next an so on. No mysteries , no puzzles (maybe a UTM coordinate here and there) and stage coordinates are in a traditional (which in my world is no mini micro nano thingy) size caches. If a cacher is willing to invest a couple of hours then I will try my best to reward their efforts with good swag and hopefully a trek with some challenge. A benefit to the out of the way cache has been it is "safer" so the quality of swag can be stepped up. I enjoy setting up a multi-stage so that it can be reached by a normal trail hike but you will put some distance on the boot leather or there will be decision points where there just might be a direct route but won't be easy or obvious. But I always give a rough idea of the distance and some verbage or clues in the cache description or hints that at first seem meaningless but once out on the trail make more sense and help with strategy. I also increase maintenance visits so that stage coordinates are present, clear and in good shape. As an experiment I recently placed a single cache but still with a decent hike required. My theory is that it will also have low traffic, because I think the majority now prefer the quick grabs and numbers. The park now has quite the variety of caches and it is interesting to watch what draws the traffic. I have thought about the super-multi-stage spread out over big distance or more than one day to complete but haven't figured out a motivating way to do it. But I would definitely warn in advance that this was the case.
  21. Yes and No I keep extra pens, pencils, log books, swag and bags in my pack in order to help out a cache in need. Some good hearted cachers have even dried out wet logs. I have cleaned and dried out several containers. I never heard of the Take a TB/Leave a TB rule. That being said before taking a TB be sure you are able to move it along according to it's mission if there is one.
  22. Already mentioned Oriental Trading but my personal favorite is Smokey Bear Swag
