  1. I'm actually pretty happy with most of the improvements made over the years. I just wish that during busy server times Premium members would have preferred access to the site and freebie members would be bumped off. Reserve 60 to 80% of the server bandwidth for premium memberships only.
  2. Now if there was just a way that trackables you own that are in your inventory could appear in a separate tabbed section. That would be nice. We have a rather large inventory of coins we own in our inventory, sometimes trackables we don't own get lost in the list. Even nicer, when you go to log a cache and drop a trackable, it would be nice if the trackables owned by someone else could be highlighted or made to stand out in some other way. If not separated on the top of the list, perhaps a special leading character?
  3. I know what you contracted as far as the poison sumac has probably cleared up by now, but for future reference, I found a wonderful site that makes natural products from jewelweed. The Indians have used it for centuries and a little lady in Tennessee has three different forms of application. I have been allergic since a child and I discovered her site two years ago. I had it all over my body after caching in the woods of North Carolina. Being an over the road driver, I needed something quick. As I was going home in two days, I ordered a kit of her products and they were waiting on me when I got home in Wisconsin. I got home and washed with the soap and applied the salve. The next day I washed with the soap again and applied the salve again. The following day the it was already drying up. Now when I know I am going to be caching in the woods, I apply the spray to my skin, and I have been poison free for the past two years. Go to this site to check it out www.altnature.com. Please pass on this information to anybody who contracts poison ivy, oak, or sumac.
  4. This is probably a question that only someone who has not yet gone geocaching would ask, so at the risk of appearing like a complete idiot, is this "paperless caching" thing really all that big a deal? I mean, when you go out you're already carrying a pack of some kind with you, correct? Is it really that big of a hassle to carry along a few additional sheets of paper? I've just got to be missing something here. As for the data transfer, I don't currently know anyone else with the slightest interest in trying geocaching, so for the time being I'll be a solo operation. Thanks for the reply. You folks are helping me make my decision. I'm getting closer and closer to hitting that "submit order" button at delorme.com. Well when you go out and do a cache run of over 120 in one day you can certainly appreciate being paperless. Time saved out in the field, not to mention time and resources to print all the cache pages out. My Treo 700P and CacheMate handle all of the descriptions and I am able to mark the caches as found both on the Treo and on my 60CSX and find the next closest cache. [A feature prominently lacking on the Delorme]. Don't get me wrong the Delorme unit is a nice feature packed unit with decent enough maps. For power cachers not being able to mark your finds is a severe drawback in my opinion.
  5. Personally if you can afford it, I would go with the Garmin Colorado 400T, It comes with preloaded Topo maps. And they load quickly. The main reason I would take the Colorado 400T over the others is that it supports "Paperless" caching. You can put the GPX files you get from Groundspeak directly onto the unit and have cache info right there on the screen. And it [Colorado 400T] allows 1,000 waypoints (caches). I currently do my paperless caching using a PDA. This new unit seems like it is a much easier entry level method for doing paperless caching. Another nice feature is the wireless transfer of cache information between other Colorado users. A very useful feature if you cache with a group using similar units. This is a new feature no other units have.
  6. Have had the same issues as well, glad to see that I'm not alone.
  7. I have a very weird problem with "Caches Along A Route", I have uploaded a number of KML files and generated the PQ's just fine. Now that these are used I would like to delete them to make room for more routes. Here is where it gets freaky. For instance.. I bring up a route that I created and saved Albany, GA to Pageland, SC It brings up the caching along a route page but instead of showing the proper route, I have a map for Washington. I'd like to delete all of the Saved Created Routes I currently have uploaded but am not able to do so. The first thing I did was clear the browser cache thinking that I may have just been getting some weird cached page off of the HD. Not the case, So I bring up Opera, same results. Well I never use IE, but in this case I gave it a shot. Nope not the solution I was hoping for. Thinking that it might be my bright shiny new Vista powered beauty. So to lay that theory to rest I grabbed my brothers XP laptop and tried to delete them, no joy. Would it be possible for someone to go in and manually delete all of the routes we have created since there is apparently no way that I can do this, Thanks DJ Operating System: Windows XP, and Windows Vista Browsers : IE 7.0, Firefox 2.01, Opera 9.1
  8. This is DJ I thought I would apologize in person for my rude comments. I usually keep them to myself. I used to be very deeply religious. I have since grown and given it all up. I had a brother who "found jesus" and pretty much disowned the family because we were all Catholic, and were going to hell because of it. This I think may have been the Copernican moment at which it all started to go by the wayside. It was a very deep hurt. It even hurt my mom who is still very pious. Then you get the Fred Phelps in the world who I am sorry to say are I know a minority, but unfortunately I have let them taint my view of the majority. Yes I was way off base, and please accept my humble apology.
  9. EDIT Bad Day should have bit my tounge. Did not mean to rock the boat so hard. Sometimes it feels like it's always being shoved in your face. I know the vast majority are fine decent folks as we are, it's the Fred Phelps in the world that tend to leave a bad taste.
  10. Yes I have a 60 CSX. I went to the local WalMart and got myself a 512MB Micro SD card, I think it ran a little over $30. These can be picked up almost anywhere. Just be careful to get the MICRO SD. The new 2 GB Micros will be out soon.
  11. Here's another option, I currently use a Garmin Foretrex 101, I think that these can be gotten around $99 or so. The optional serial cable was an extra $10 but well worth it. I use this unit alongside other team members using a 60C and it's every bit as accurate. Another nice feature is that it is on my wrist, which frees my hands for other things. It is also much stealthier when stealth is an issue. Yes there are many options out there without having to spend a mint. But to be honest, for me PC transfer is less of a luxury and more of a necessity.
  12. We are VERY seriously considering attending this event. Please keep us and the group at GeoTruckers.com posted when more info becomes available. Thanks.
  13. Well we look forward to having you come join us in the forums. Your input is ver much welcomed as well as needed. Also DJSTERN has had a few free moments and is starting to mold the fornt page of the website.
  14. OK it's a reality now. The front page of the website is not really there yet, but the Forums have been set up and are running. All those interested in joining can go to GeoTruckers.com Forums and join. Hope to see you all there soon. Thanks for your patience.
  15. Will add that to the list. Our webmaster has been busy working on things in between gaving to deal with his truck breaking down twice. The site has not yet been updated. He has been testing a number of things out nad making sure it all works before we go live with it.
  16. Very well put. Couldn't have said it better. One other thing that we are hoping to include in the website is a section that provides tips and pointers on how to do things. As well as possibly have regional gatherings. Who knows where it will all go once it takes off.
  17. Just want to add another comment regarding the wireless air cards from Sprint. We upgraded ours yesterday. They [sprint] currently have a special going until November 12. Existing voice customers adding a new line of service cn pick up one of the new EVdo cards for free and lock in a montly rate of $59.95 a month for all you can eat data. I must say that I was impressed with the speed. Where we were it was just under 500k, pretty close to DSL. And faster than any WiFi that we have used. The enhanced service is not everywhere yet, but the coverage has been much better than it was shown on the map and it will grow every day. New customers can get the connection card for free, but will have to pay $80 a month for unlimited data. Still not bad deal considering the card is free.
  18. Your post even included what's likely the optimal key word (lowranceusr) to use in the search feature. :-) The most pertinent is probably this one: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...33;entry1635892 I do beleve that post answered the question directly. I knew it could be done. Thanks much.
  19. Thanks will give that a try. I tried a few other searches and spent a good amount of time weeding thru numerous posts.
  20. I am sorry I need a little help. In the custom export section, how would I enter a command to tell gps babel to export to a lowranceusr file? Kinda new here on that one. I will keep reading in the help section and on the gps babel website in hope I can figure it out, but am hoping that someone might have a better knowledge of the inner workings and be able to give me a shortcut.
  21. Sure, I am slowly compiling a list of big rig friendly caches. I currently have around 130 or so across the country. Later on in the forums I am hoping that we will have some sort of area where we can share the ones that folks find. I know that keeping a database in GSAK is a daunting endeavor at best since caches are always being added and archived. I am hoping that we can find a way to pool the knowledge that will be more dynamic in nature.
  22. Most of the major truckstop chains have WiFi. Flying J, TA, and some Petros have their own brand (one subscription works at all the chain locations). There are also a few others out there providing WiFi. Truckstop.net while it lasted was a good thing. I think that is being replaced by Sircomm, but don't quote me. A lot of drivers drivers myself included, have opted to get a cell modem. We have ours through Sprint. At the time after much research, they were the fastest and had the largest coverage area. The others are good as well. We are very happy with Sprint so far. It's really neat to be online (in the sleeper) going down the road at 65 mph. The connection speed usually varies between 70 to 110K, but soon will be faster once EVDo rolls out. Verizon, TMobile, and Cingular also have them. Not sure how good the Nextel ones are, or if they even still have them. The coverage area varies between carriers, and it also depends on what is available to you in your home market. Some carriers will not let you subscribe if they do not offer service in your home area. Most have an "all you can eat" data plan for around $85 a month. Just another thing to consider. Since I itemize my deductions every year it is a tax write off for us, as well as the fees for WiFi.
  23. That would be welcomed. I have a list of 130 or so caches going right now that are large vehicle friendly. One of the goals that I am looking forward to attaining with this endeavor is to share and develope a list so that they are easier to find.
  24. My only concern regarding going this direction is that this use of the GC logo goes beyond personal use and may constitute some degree of copyright infringement. We don't want to create any problems with GC.com. Perhaps contact someone higher up to get permission first. Check out the terms of use for the logo. http://www.geocaching.com/about/logousage.aspx Here is brief quote: "No web development, web design, web graphic designer or web hosting firm can use the Groundspeak Geocaching logos without paying a developer's license fee if they plan on altering the logos for their client(s). For information on commercial licenses, please send an email inquiry to logo@Groundspeak.com. The user of a personal website is not permitted to commercially exploit any of the Groundspeak Geocaching logos. Nor can the web user transfer the Groundspeak Geocaching logos to any third party. Any reprinting, sublicensing, copying, modifying, publishing, assignment, transfer, sales, or other distribution of the Groundspeak Geocaching logos contained within this website or any other website is strictly prohibited without the prior written consent of Groundspeak. The user shall not copy, reverse engineer, translate, port, modify or make derivative works of the Groundspeak Geocaching logos without express written permission from Groundspeak." If you want to read the entire section it is at http://www.geocaching.com/about/logousage.aspx I was concerned with this when I took the colors for use in my avatar, but after looking into it a little deeper felt that it was covered under personal use. However use by a club may be a different issue all together. I'm not trying to be a stickler here, just trying to keep any bigger problems from coming up in the future.
