  1. Did you go to Garmin.com and see if they updated drivers. I recently had the same problem with new Venture HC. I finally had to go to a restore point before I installed the hardware and start over and it worked the second time (Windows XP).
  2. Help me follow you. Do you mean to say it was shipped straight from Garmin as opposed to Amazon's warehouse (if they even have one, I don't know how Amazon works)? I will have to check my shipping documents but it would not suprise me Garmin was the direct shipper. Amazon is nothing more than a virtual storefront for a lot of the stuff they sell. I once purchased some golf related equipment and the item was shipped from the The Gof Warehouse (TGW.com) which is about 4 miles from my house. Took UPS 3 days to deliver the package. Think about it. If Amazaon had to warehouse all of the stuff they sold the cost would be much higher. This way a manufacturer can sell their procuct for less than the MSRP on their websites.
  3. I bought my Garmin from Amazon and the unit was shipped from Kansas City. Just a coincidence that Garmin is located in the Kansas City area. I think not.
  4. I use mine for Golf. I have not done geocaching for a couple of years but, I hope to get back to it sometime in the near future.
  5. Just recently purchased a Venture HC and have question. On the Highway page I changed one of the data fields to read Trip Time. This data field started by displaying 12 hrs 28 minutes and timed from there. I did have a route that was still navigating. Stopped navigating the route and started another. But, the trip time did not go back to zero. Is there some trick to resetting the trip time?
  6. My first GPS unit broke (Etrex Legend) and despite some advice from this forum I was unable to repair it. So, I just quit geocaching. Well I decided to buy another unit and give it a go again. So my Extrex Venture HC will be here in the next week or so. I plan on doing some geocaching and mapping of the golf courses I play. Last find was in May of 2005 so it has been a while. FYI - I have a friend who is a Boy Scout leader and he is thinking of introducing his troop to geocaching. Is this a good idea?
  7. Ok I want a GPS to do several things: 1. Navigation in my car (with turn by turn) 2. Geocaching 3. Golf (I create a route for each hole with current Garmin GPS) Is there any GPS unit out there that can do all of these things? Would I be better off using Pocket PC with a bluetooth GPS? Should I just plan on buying specific GPS units for each activity?
  8. I have one where the ribbon came loose and I failed to fix it correctly. Send me an email and we can work out the details if you would like this unit.
  9. So is the Mapsource and Waypoint manager something I need? Or, Is there some other freeware that will do the samething?
  10. If I notice that the differences between the Venture CX and the Legend CX is the Waypoint manager and the USB cable. Can I pick up a USB cable that will work and electronics store or is the a proprietary cable? What does the Waypoint manager do for me?
  11. How many times has this been asked? Here is the deal I have not been geocaching for a while since my Extex Legend suffered from the faulty display ribbon and my attempts to fix it failed. I now have the funds to buy a new unit and would like to use the GPS for the following purposes: 1. Golf course mapping (most of the time) 2. Geocaching 3. Highway and Street navigation I am not wanting to buy a golf specific GPS because of the money and I can walk the courses I play and set up a route for each hole. I am leaning towards another Garmin but I don’t want another unit where the display ribbon will eventually fail. I also want color. Here are the ones I am looking at: 1. Etrex Venture HC 2. Etrex Venture CX 3. Etrex Legend CX 4. Etrex Legend HCS Please help me pick from the above list or offer alternatives at a comparable price?
  12. Venture CX. For around $180 you get a color display, expandable map memory (up to 2 gigs), USB connection and autorouting capability. No other unit in that price range offers all that. Reception will also be much better than your old Legend and I've not heard anything about the lines across the screen issue with the color units. Thanks for the advice. So can I transfer routes to the Venture from Easy GPS on my PC to the GPS with the memory card or do I need the USB cable? How much does a cable cost? Will say a digital camera cable work?
  13. bonz Checked mail and sent a response back.
  14. Is this a good deal??? How does this compare to the Garmin for accuracy?
  15. The only cable I have is the serial cable. Since I would guess that any GPS I buy will come complete with a cable I see no reason why I can't send it to you. Let me know.
  16. I purchased an Etrex Legend a little over a year ago. The unit started acting funny this fall (lines across the screen). One of the users here suggested it was a bad ribbon and sent instruction on how to repair the unit. I was unable to repair the unit myself. I have decided that I want to buy another unit. So, was my problem with the legend an isloated issue or does the issue cross all of the Garmin models? What some recommendations for a new inexpensive unit? FYI - If anyone wants the the Etrex Legend that is in pieces and is willing to pay postage it's yours.
  17. Igolf and Sky Caddy are the most popular ones out right now. The iGolf unit is about $230 and you buy a subscription for certain course maps. Sky Caddy has 4 different units, $240 - $325+, here again you have to buy a subscription for the maps. Each mapped course is customizable and when you get a mapped course you own it.
  18. NightPilot, Thanks for the information. I was thinking along the same lines as you about a bluetooth GPS. Considering the cost of a PDA to run golf software in comparison to buying a golf specific GPS they are about the same. So, it might be best just to own 2 differenct GPS devices (1 for golf and 1 for general use) and forget the PDA.
  19. Well to add to my story. My Etrex just died due to a loose connector ribbon and I was unable to repair. So, I am in the market for a new GPS. In addition, I am willing to buy a new PDA to run some of the golf software. I am looking for versatility in that I want a GPS that I can use for geocaching, golf maps and street directions. I also want durability. If I hear you guys correctly I should buy a PDA that is bluetooth capable. Would it be better to buy another Garmin GPS and a bluetooth adapter or just buy a bluetooth GPS. Looking for recommendations here. You guys are the best resource for this.
  20. I have and etrex legend. However, there is a golf mapping package that I want to buy it which can be used only with a GPS unit attached to a Pocket PC or Palm. Are there some good recommendations for these type of units. or, Is there a source for Golf Specific Software for a GPS unit. I currently have set up routes for each hole and then navigate the routes as I play. I was looking for something a little more sophisticated. I know that they make golf specific GPS units with mapping software but I was wanting a GPS unit that is a little more versatile.
  21. It's possible that there is a loose ribbon connector inside the casing...are you seeing lines on the screen? If this is the problem it can be repaired. If your gps is still under warranty, check with garmin. Otherwise, I have a file here with the steps to repairing it (if this is the problem). If interested, PM me your email address and I'll send you the file. Yes, I am seeing lines on the screen. No, the unit is no longer under warranty. Please send me the instructions to repair. Send to kehrlich.golf@cox.net
  22. Recharged the batteries for Etrex Legend. When I went to turn the unit on the startup screen was blurry. Now I have an intermittent problem where the screen will go goofy and then come back to normal. I do recall dropping this not to long ago but I have used it since then and it worked fine. Could this be a battery issue or has the unit gone bad. If it has gone bad I am not a happy camper because I have not used it that many times for it to go bad.
  23. I have an eTrex legend with a serial cable. I want to be able to download some of my waypoints and routes to my PC. What software do I need to do this? Is there any shareware/freeware that I can download? Thanks.

    It's Here

The UPS truck came early today. Since I was home with my son who is out of school since yesterday we decided to give our new eTrex Legend a go. We back tracked a couple of caches we had found without a GPS to see how it works and then went for our first find. We got to the location and began looking using the map we seemed to get close (10 feet and them we would get further away). When I was within 10 feet again I just used my common sense and asked where I would hide a cache around here. With about 5 minutes of looking the cache was spotted. Probably should have switched over to the Navigation page and I might have gotten a better fix on exactly where we were going once we were on the site.
