  1. Thankyou for all the responses guys and gals, some good info there. I do like the key idea as it adds a certain element of gratification when it is reunited with the lock. I have had a locked cache broken into before so the coordinates would be attached to the keyring along with the TB, this means that whoever figures out the location will have the key so no need to break in. It also means that the TB is less likely to go on an epic walkabout as nearly every time it is collected it will be taken back to the same area to unlock the cache. The 'lock out,tag out' cache GC2BNRZ that was kindly suggested by SpaceGamer is exactly the sort of thing I wish to achieve. My HTML skills are pretty non existant, does anyone have any idea how the CO made the page dynamic with the TB info?
  2. Hello all, I have had an idea for a new puzzle cache and would like some input as to what people think would work best. The general idea is to have a cache hidden somewhere and release a TB that has the coordinates for it, the cacher would have to hunt down the TB before finding the final. An alternative option is to have the TB attached to a key and coordinates that open the final so that the cacher has to physicaly take the TB with them. I think this would be a more rewarding experience but could cause problems if other users wish to persue the cache as someone else may be holding onto the key. One more thing, would this be best described as a puzzle or a multi? Thanks in advance.
  3. NOTE TO MOD : Please delete this thread. According to the US FAA GPS testing will be in progress between Jan20 and Feb22 and that signals maybe unreliable during this period. It is only south eastern USA effected by these tests. http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/20/faa-warns-of-ongoing-gps-issues-in-southeastern-us-due-to-defens/?ncid=txtlnkusenga00000002 Seen as the start date has passed has anyone had any issues with GPS data recently?
  4. You could make them night caches and have hints painted with luminous piant.
  5. I thought asking the forums to solve a puzzle isn't allowed?
  6. I (deleted) HATE HOLIDAYS!! I went to buy some sun cream and i couldn't get the top off, shove your crumby holidays! (Moderator note -- please keep asterisked profanity off the boards)
  7. I can understand your frustrations, but its a little unfair to blame geocaching for your hatered. As far as I can see you had a rough deal whilst shopping for a GPS. Finding a cache can be tricky the first few times until you know what your looking for and the sport doesn't have to be expensive. I picked up a Garmin Etrex H ,the entry level unit, for $70 and it is perfectly adequate for the job. Thats it for expense unless I wish to travel further afield. I hope you give another go sometime as It is a fantastic pastime once you have your head around things a little.
  8. Now why would you even look for a cache hidden in a trash dump? I'd log the DNF, and why, then put the cache on my ignore list. If I thought it was in an area that would get the attention it deserves, like a park or playground, I'd contact the authorities. It was a road pull off point on a bend where someone had dumped ther trash. The rubbish probably wasn't there when the cache was placed, I pointed the situation out the CO so may have been rectified by now.
  9. I have lost count of the number of plastic bags I have fished out of bushes etc that are filled with dog doo Other than this I once remeber searching for a roadside micro that had been placed under a rock in a fly typ, opening up numerous containers with month old food in is not my idea of fun.
  10. and yet, people still rent Solaris and The Super. I have not watched these films but judging by the ratings that they have recieved I will not go out of my way to do so. You cannot blame the rating systems for the fact that people still rent these films as they clearly show that the two are mediocre at best.
  11. I would also like to see an in-house rating system. GCVote works very well for me but it would be nice to be able to do a search basd on ratings. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what type of cache your into a poor cache is a poor cache and will get marked down accordingly. Just like films and books you still get stinkers in your favourite genre.
  12. Maqluba GC1QTBJ Descending into a crater down a piece of rope tied around a bush followed by navigating through seriously dense undergrowth to GZ was a special one for me.
  13. Not phrased that way. I think (yes this is an opinion before you just all over me again) that people grow to dislike micros is because they run into a disproportionate amount a bad micro hides versus good micro hides. Then why don't we see threads against bad micro hides? We see LOTS of threads against lame caches, and LOTS of threads against micros. In the anti-micro threads (like this one) someone always tries to say that it's not the size, it's the lameness. And when they do, they're off topic. Like you. I wish you and some of the others would stop over-analyzing my sentences. I'm not the greatest writer in the world so I'd appreciate that the focus would be on my ideas and not my choice of wording. I just wanted to show that the topic is not as narrow as you'd want it to be. And I just wanted to show you that when you say that people don't like micros only because they're lame, you're wrong. There are LOTS of people that don't like micros because they're small and hard to find, or because they don't contain swag, or because they tend to leak more than ammo cans, or whatever. You keep trying to say that you know what "people" think, and you don't. Most of them are lame and thats why I and the people at large dislike most of them, Avernar is spot on. Is there anyway to setup a poll? It seems this would be the only way of convincing you and a couple of others on here that the majority of people do actually agree.
  14. I thought the concept of taking into account someone elses recommendation was a flawed one sbell111? Why did you think that? Why would searching out a list of large caches be a bad thing if someone simply didn't wish to find micros? This is much different than merely knowing which caches were 'liked' by a bunch of strangers that may or may not have the same likes and dislikes as you. This would be an attempt to find a list of caches that are known to not have the quality that you dislike (micros). First up I do not 'dislike' micros, I dislike some micros. I do not wish to filter out all micros, I would like to see a system, along with many others, where I can easily have an idea if it is a micro worth finding or not. Secondly I regard the opinions of fellow strangers highly. The overall concensus on these boards is that hardly anyone enjoys a boring drive by cache, why should other non posting strangers think any differently? With a user rating system a high scoring cache will be through a majority vote and not on an individuals opinion.

  16. I still think a voting system would work. I really can't imagine that the majority of people enjoy boring poorly thought out cache's. Judging by the amount of people who have responded to this thread with a similar dislike of grab and dash micro's then I feel even more confident that a system like this would work.
  17. I'm going to throw my two pennies worth into this debate. I really haven't enjoyed most of the micros that I have found, but there are exceptions and ones that I really have enjoyed finding. For this reason I don't want to filter out all micros from my search as I know that some of them are actually very good. I propose that a system is introduced to the site where users, whilst logging a cache, can rate out of five stars the overall quality/enjoyment of the find. This would then be an additional pocket querey search variable and allow a user to filter out the poor caches ,of whatever size, from the search results.
  18. A good trick to get these is to press your face up to the picture, focus, and then slowly bring your face out again holding that original focus. The image should gain depth and the numbers will pop out at you. Nice idea whoever thought of this puzzle
  19. It was risky situations that got me hooked on geocaching. I was away in Malta with work and got talking to a colleauge who introduced me to geocaching. My very first cache involved walking a cliff to a series of underground lava tubes where the cache was hidden behind a boulder deep in the system, very cool! My second cache took us to a massive overgrown crater where we had to descend part of the cliff face via 20ft of rotten rope lashed around the base of a bush! After fighting through the jungle of undergrowth, finding and signing the cache and then returning up the sketchy rope I was won over
