  1. I have 182 finds according to my profile but when I set the query up, it says 137. I believe that everything is set correctly. Any suggestions?
  2. It could be that people are not paying attention or getting accurate readings. I really think that part of it is the device though as well. I've used a lot of devices, phones, GPSr, etc and always found that GPSr is better, just my personal preferences, I suppose. I just really like the Garmin 24k Topo maps- I find that they have so much more data than Apple or Google maps when it comes to the woods. I just my unit for more than caching as well. I did notify the cache owner about the coords, some of them others have posted that they are off as well. When I placed my 2 caches, they were exact but the actual contained was well hidden.
  3. I would say that some are off up to 20 feet or so; this is out on a trail with no buildings and some are in dense forests while some are not so dense. Some caches are dead on as well. I should have clarified, not ALL caches are "way" off, just some recent ones in the past couple of years and maybe that's due to people creating caches on their phones. When one creates a cache, what's the "rule"? Are you to bring the person RIGHT to the spot or in the close vicinity so that they have to look around? Just curious as I want to keep that in mind and I also realize that some people may not record an averaged waypoint when creating a cache.
  4. I've noticed with 2 Garmin GPS receives that the cache locations are usually off by sometimes up to 20'. Newer caches seem to be prone to this problem, older ones from 8 years ago seem to be better. Is this by design or is it possible that people creating the caches are not getting an accurate reading? I know that my unit, Garmin GPSMap 66st, is pretty accurate.
  5. That's such a personal question and a difficult one to give an answer for. I've used Garmin touch models and now just purchased the GPSMAP 66st and really like it. I like it's accuracy, features and buttons that I use use with gloves in the winter. I also purchase Garmin's 24k topo maps, they are routable and have tons of data for when we go hiking, etc. What did you end up buying?
  6. Hi, is there a Cyber monday sale on memberships?
  7. Yup, open up Basecamp with the unit connected and look for the open treasure just and delete them.
  8. Hi, I know that you are interested in those two, I was as well due to the touch, but, in the winter, you need to take your gloves off. I opted for the Garmin GPSMAP 66st and am very happy with it. It took awhile to get used to the keys, navigation, etc but am very pleased. What features are you looking for? What interests you in that model? That may help us give you advise. .
  9. Hi, I've read the documentation but you must have something better, where did you find it?
  10. Hi, I have a new Garmin GPSMAP 66st; I'm playing with the custom filters for Geocaching. I'd like to be able to create a filter for: Available during winter Abandoned structure Etc, however, I don't know what codes to use. Here's a sample file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <GeocacheFilter> <Settings> <Version>1</Version> <Types> <Type>0</Type> <Type>1</Type> <Type>2</Type> <Type>3</Type> <Type>4</Type> <Type>5</Type> <Type>6</Type> <Type>7</Type> <Type>8</Type> <Type>9</Type> <Type>10</Type> <Type>11</Type> </Types> <Sizes> <Size>0</Size> <Size>1</Size> <Size>2</Size> <Size>3</Size> <Size>4</Size> <Size>5</Size> <Size>6</Size> <Size>7</Size> </Sizes> <SizeMin>1.0</SizeMin> <SizeMax>5.0</SizeMax> <DifficultyMin>1.0</DifficultyMin> <DifficultyMax>5.0</DifficultyMax> <TerrainMin>1.0</TerrainMin> <TerrainMax>5.0</TerrainMax> <AwesomeMin>1.0</AwesomeMin> <AwesomeMax>5.0</AwesomeMax> <Statuses> <Status>0</Status> <Status>1</Status> <Status>2</Status> </Statuses> </Settings> </GeocacheFilter>
  11. Thank you VERY much for adding Google maps back! You won't be losing my subscription after all!
  12. But if you only want to check the black stream paddle cache why in the world are you not using the map links on the cache page? They are still available e.g. google maps http://maps.google.com/maps?q=N+44%C2%B0+51.765+W+068%C2%B0+57.060+%28GC315QE%29+ or bing http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v=2&sp=point.44.86275_-68.951_GC315QE or whatever you might wish. All the maps that have been available before February 14 are still available. The only loss happened with respect to the map which shows all the caches in an area. This is of course a problem for some when planning cache tours, but it is not a problem for your example and so many other examples brought up in this thread. Cezanne In reply to JROgden during your planning you can read the cache pages. The cache page states quite clearly that a kayak or canoe is the preferred method of access. I am the owner of that cache, which is why I used that as an _example_. When _I_ look for caches, I like to move to aerial or topo view and look for certain areas, such as mountainous or water based areas. I don't have the time to look at the description of every cache to find what I'm looking for. I wonder if it's possible that we as a member can create our own API key and plug it into a setting in geocaching.com so that we can use google maps. I know that other sites do this. (Geosetter for example). That's just what I have time for, updating maps- no thanks- I'll leave that up to Google. Your argument is pretty weak, just because technology didn't exist 10 years ago for this, doesn't mean we still should be fine with not having it now.
  13. I'd also like to say that I use the terrain view a lot as well when planning hikes into uncertain terrain and Google maps 3d relief shading has it down compared to any other services. A great example: http://www.geocaching.com/map/default.aspx?ll=44.87359,-68.94345 There's a cache, black stream paddle, the is on a stream, can you determine this via Mapquest or the other "maps" available to us? I just tried to search for caches in Washington State along certain mountain ranges and caches wouldn't load let along many portions of the map. This is just unusable... Here's an example of the same location, notice that the first map, Mapuest does not depict the stream.

  15. Mapquest is still running very slow and is still useless. Like others, I too will NOT be renewing my subscription and will probably move to Opencaching.com.
  16. What a horrible surprise I had today logging in to find some caches via the map. I HATE mapquest, why isn't there an option to switch to Google maps? This may cause me to not renew my subscription when it runs out. HORRIBLE. And to the people saying that satellite maps are useless.... maybe to you but to me who plans my route out they are VERY useful. I do have a good memory and having that as an option is NEEDED. Edit: I will not be renewing when it comes up- I just dislike this feature that much. [Edited by moderator to remove forum guideline violation.]
  17. If I were to buy the Garmin 24k topo maps, would shadowing be show on this model? edit: I saw someone that had it, I personally like the free topos from gpsfiledepot due the how Garmin makes everything green, it's too dark.
  18. You can use it to view your record tracks, install custom maps (gpsfiledepot.com or even the Garmin maps), modify and mange geocachers, waypoints, etc. Also, if you havent yet, run the Garmin WebUpdater to make sure your GPS has the latest firmware update.
  19. So the log date is no longer going to be displayed? Just some ambiguous time span such as "about 6 months ago". Please bring the date back! Seriously guys? Some people need to see specific dates. +1 to that! Dates are how we know exactly when the cache was last found. It helps me determine the difference between a DNF and a missing cache. I'd be happier to know that the cache was found exactly 3 weeks and 4 days ago instead of about a month ago. "About a month" can be anything from 3 to 5 weeks. Perhaps I'll be happier with the change if I know the reason. Wow, just when you think the amount of white space and unnecessary scrolling couldn't get worse along this comes []. When accompanied by loss of really useful information I do not know what the world is coming to. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh it is horrid. I agree, the dates need to be shown, not relative dates.
  20. I like the new additions, the only complaint I have is the relative timestamp of the entry logs, "About a year ago". I like to see the actual date.
  21. Is there going to be a special event for 11/11/11 like there was last year for 10/10/10?
  22. I sometimes leave TFTC logs, but normally try to leave a nice entry, however sometimes they just don't warrant a long post. For people that find a lot of caches in one day, that trivial cache may just not deserve a long essay.
  23. It seems like with the latest update (this was not a problem a few days ago) that when I'm in my profile and if I've visited Lists for example and then go some where else, the link color changes. This is visually distracting and un-appealing. I think the a link visited css line should be set to same as the a link css line, however, that's just my opinion.
  24. I just figured it out, I had the selection for origin and location set improperly. Maybe I should not have modified it in the first place which may have been the cause of this to begin with.
  25. For some reason the My Finds does not show all of my finds. It only covers Maine to PA when I have found a few caches in Virginia as well. When I try to modify the query it still does not work. Any advice?
