  1. Hi . Thanks for the reply. I have tried all of the above and even asked it nicely . Totally gutted that its just died, it was fine after loaded and set off. it just flatly refuses to turn on. tried the master reset button and still nada.I shall email the address above ( think I did that yesterday but will do it again). I could understand if this unit had a hard life but its had around 6 - 10 hours use in 2 years and is like new and was always hung up or was around my neck . Thanks again for taking the time to reply
  2. Hi guys, after having a cool 100 new caches go live at my most favourite walking place yesterday. I dusted down my Magellan and loaded up all the caches, drove miles to collect my sister and eventually got to the the car park. Upon arrival i find out that my gps is totally dead, I went to the local shop and bought more batteries in the hope that it was the batteries at fault. However it wasn't the problem. I have arrived home minus any caches but with a foul mood. My gps unit is totally dead. No amount of playing with settings, batteries or any other thing i can think of will get my unit working. Does any one have any knowledge that may help me to at least get the unit turned on and talking to the PC? totally gutted as i had a big day caching planned and was hoping to get back into it. I could understand if my unit worked its butt off but tbh it gets used for approx 6 hours a year . Any help greatly received and appreciated.. my email is tracy.measuring@yahoo.co.uk (don't get on the pc often but check my emails on my mobile all the time)
  3. Hi guys, Well i'm really after sme opinions please. In bigger caches ( Ammo box / big tupperware boxes etc) what would you like to see as FTF items? I have so far come across FTF certificates and badges and trackables that have been left for the 1st finder to move along. So now i have learnt how to set my own caches i want to do something different. So far i have done a few badges but i like to be different So i ordered some specially made goodies and I have just taken delivery of my First batch of FTF rosettes. They are stunning looking and i can't wait to pop then into a series i'm waiting on to be ok'd and go live. Is it the thought that counts or do people not really worry about getting something for their FTF?? Or is there something that you have found as a FTF and thought WOW, what a great idea
  4. well it seems that there are just some plain nasties that get "deposited" yuk yuk yuk . Hopefully that'll be the end of my "nasty" surprises!
  5. Well, i thought i'd go and check my (hopefully soon to go live caches), and was habving a plesent walk checking the GPS and basically having an amble, when i came to my Magnetic one. I climbed down and into the hidey and noticed that the container had been moved. So thinking that it was possibly the "rangers" checking the location i thought i'd have a look at the log book. Well upon opening it some liquid came out , so wasn't impressed that my container had failed. Upon climbing out with the cache i had a better look, only to find that some completely disgusting Muggle had P'd in my Cache pot! So i had Muggle wee all over my hands , a missing FTF badge a ruined Logbook and stinky cache container. Luckily i had a cammo spare and found a hole to locate it in, i just hope that this one doesnt suffer the same fate! So what Nasties have you guys found in caches
  6. I bought mine from Amazon and it comes with a USB cable which is used for data only, it runs on AA batteries so you don't get a charger
  7. Thank you so much for your help I have just sent the maps and applications off, Just need everything to be tickety bo now Note to self - if there is an untouched wood, its untouched for a reason!
  8. No, as far as i am aware a email copy of the locations ( different pins for each location or 5 different maps ) on the map are fine Thats what my scout leader mate was tring to sort out but even he hit a brick wall That shouldn't be too difficult, if you want to mail me the sets of co-ords through my profile I'll knock up some maps for you tonight. Oh thank you so much , that would be absolutely 100% fantastic. You are an absolute star. I've been sat at the PC for hours today trying different maps and i just haven't got anywhere. I'll find my co-ords book ( threw it in a huff earlier and think the dog took it off down the garden!) and send them to you thankyou so much again.
  9. Ah dear ah dear, i realised i was typing this with a Migraine! a floody Dish, that should have been a floppy disk, and of course scroll. I do apologise for the huge nasty spelling mistakes and hope you weren't too with the instructions
  10. As a PM you can run a PQ. Once you get the PQ downloaded onto your system you can unzip the file then drag and drop the 2 .gpx files into the geocaching folder on the unit. For those that are basic members they can use the cache search page. You can check the boxes to the left of the cache listing or use the select all button at the bottom of the page. Then click on the download waypoints button at the bottom of the page. This will download all the selected caches as a .loc file. Then like the PQ you drag and drop that file into the Geocaching folder on the unit. Ah your talking about Pocket Queries, mmm i have no idea how to do them so i just click and send lol.
  11. Yep i do all that ! but what i'm trying to find out is how i get the menu i had before, it asked if i wanted to take reading now ( or something like that ) or click on more accurate reading, it then counted down from 5 or 10 and then gave the reading Its more of a hunt for the menu option as opposed to "needing it" to hide or make waypoints
  12. No, as far as i am aware a email copy of the locations ( different pins for each location or 5 different maps ) on the map are fine Thats what my scout leader mate was tring to sort out but even he hit a brick wall
  13. Now that i found the easiest thing to do ( far easier than trying to reset it back to english after i accidentaly set it to german lol), please feel free to pm me and i'll help if i can. Or email me on happy jinx 2002 at yahoo dot com ( please remove spaces and add the @ and . ) Mine was a simple case of plug in the pc, click the box and play. You can only do one cache at a time but its pretty quick! i'm on vista. I'll help if i can
  14. The MAGIC map itself is not that easy to use. There is an excellent link you can put coordinates into (in any format) and get a map with a pointer. You can then zoom in or out - the best way is to use the Scale box (lower right) and change the default 6000 to 4000, 2000 or 1000 to zoom right in or 10000 or 20000 to zoom out. Link to Magic MapIt! If you want more information about using MAGIC, getting coordinates and controlling the layers then click here. Don't pan around the map as the pointer arrow doesn't move! Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com UK Geocaching Information & Resources website www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk Geocaching.com Knowledge Books Thanks people, i have tried that map and i find it quite easy to use, however i just can't get it to print with the pinpoints on, i can't screenshot it to the right scale with the points on and if i manage to print anything at the right scale and then manage to get the locations right with a biro it then scans into my pc at the wrong size ... Homer Simpsons DOH! springs to mind
  15. Ah thats ok then, i was fearing for your sanity lol. I have very nearly launched mine on the floor a few times in complete frustration
  16. Ok, well the link provided with the PDF format application is now out of date, so after 4 hours of sitting at the pc filling in , finding map location links and then submitting, it turns out i have to fill in a different up to date application form which is in word format. However you now can't just provide a map link for them to check, you have to get a map, in scale 1:10000 and pin point your caches on there, then forward a individual map for each location. Which is all lovely but i haven't a clue how to do,all i manage is to get something that looks vaugely like a map but with no points on! I've had other friends try and help but to no avail so i will go back this week and collect in all the ammo boxes, tubs, containers and travel bugs i left as i really can't get my head around it! No wonder this area is completely un touched by Caching hands Thanks for all your help people
  17. I have just spoken to a lovely lady Re permission, Yay! should hopefully have the caches up and running in the summer hols! (subject to validation) Thank you
  18. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/HCOU-4U4HZK#SouthEastEngland http://support.magellangps.com/support/assets/manuals/Magellan_eXploristGC_UserHandbook.pdf Not sure about the logbooks bit. I either use a small notebook - or lined paper - or design my own.. from memory there's nothing special about the downloaded one? For all other answers, GIYF Thanks , but the number listed for the FC is wrong, i have tried that site, tried all internet searches, tried emailing them and it just doesnt work. I'm beginning to think thats why the area i had in mind is completely cacheless :-(. Have read the Magellan guide, downloaded and still can't find the answers lol, ah well never mind Thank you though
  19. We would all like to get 100%, but it's not possible with consumer market units! You may mean 'Average' the readings. I'm sure someone with that unit can help. Ah no what i mean is it gives you a count down to 100% as opposed to just taking a reading in seconds, it can mean a difference of about 5 ft lol. I know its never 100% on the ball
  20. ok,there are 2 ways of adding co ords! one for where you are at that precise moment, good for if you are already at the cache site ( the last one needed for your clue) on your main screen you will have your 5 circles, go over to the map icon and select. you can either push the joystick down and hold for approx 5 seconds ( that will give you a way point of where you are at that exact moment ) or you can go through the menu ( via the menu button, this will only give you the co ords for where you are stan9ing at that moment) for instance mine has saved as wp 59! Or the one you will need to put co ords in to , on the main screen select the flag icon, it wil then either have no way points saved or the pre set ones will be there, either delete or ignore them! once on this "page" push the Menu button, this will bring up sort and search, add Waypoint etc etc, Select add waypoint this will give you another menu, Current location ( does the same as the above mentioned tip) point on map ( self explanitory but never used it) Coordinates (select this via the joystick as usual) * Projection ( no idea what this does, not been that brave lol) once you have selected the co ord link "page" whatever you should just literally add in the co ords you want. Each number is click on able and changeable individually! SO i chose to add in 50 55.634 5 move right, move along one with the joystick, 0 and then push down to save. it then moves to next bit, just change each number and move right ( or left if you got it wrong)move and click to save the whole co- rd the whole number thing turns yellow when saved. You select the numbers via up and down with the joy stick. you do exactly the same for the next part of the co ords the first 000 is represented by a single 0 only i saved 000 9.867 once that is done, click down on the joystick to lock them in and then scrool down to the OK button ( it lights up yellow, click to save), that is now saved on my device as waypoint 60, you do need to scrool down to the floody dish icon and save it there otherwise it wipes from the short term memory. YOu can change the flag colours and name of the waypoint by highlighting and clicking to change. I hope this helps and you get your bonus cache
  21. Hi there, give me a tick and i'll write you a guide as to how to enter the co -ords . Not the easiest of devices to use are they!
  22. Hi there, I don't know if any of you can help, but i can't seem to find the answers anywhere online ( have looked but possibly just not seeing it!) Ok i have a Magellan GC, i find it really hard to orerate and have got to the point i may as well not have it ( it was a Xmas present), i have Emailed and FB magellan quite a few times and i never seem to get an answer I ideally need to know how to get 100% accurate reading when i am doing waymarks for possible new caches, i found it once but for the life of me can't remember how to do it again and there are no online guides that i can find that give a difinitive answer. Its all a little bit La-la for me! I need things spelt out simpleton like lol. Secondly i really really need to know if anyone has a contact for the Forestry commission in East Sussex ( i set out a brilliant load of caches and made the newbie error of not contacting them before-hand, anyhow the numbers i have for them are a digit short and no-one seems to have a correct number for them) also the email address bounces back ) so i have a series of caches which i am going to have to go back and collect in as i can't contact anyone for permission . A shame really as it took nearly 5 hours collectiong co-ords and then nearly as long placing them ( Darn Muggles!) And lastly please can someone point me to the direct link for the printable log sheets, the link i have takes me to the GC home page but i can't find anywhere on the page that takes me to the print log books bit. Sorry for so many Q's but i've sat around on these for a while hoping that i could get some answers from fellow local cachers, but i haven't made the more recent meetss and i'm getting desperate Many thanks for any replies
  23. Brilliant, many thanks guys :-). I'll give em a go now.
