  1. I will be in seattle for the block party that day. If you want to go to that, there are buses, train think 3 hrs travel time or drive, between seattle and Vancouver. I will be in Vancouver area the 1.5 weeks after. Visiting from Ottawa.

  3. You should be able to go in to the settings and change ft to meters. Not sure the details on your unit, but if you play around you should find it.
  4. After a bomb incident on Ottawa years ago we held a workshop and had the officer in charge of bomb squad attend. It was a good learning curve for both sides as we displayed various containers and he provided feedback. From his feedback good urban containers are Nano's (so tiny, not much damage can be done) and clear containers. We were told, that once the call is received by them they will follow through on their actions which usually means blowing it up if they can not see through it. The Ottawa incident, it took over a week for it to hit the news that it was a geocache and then the media ate it up and played with it. Claiming that police were meeting with geocachers to discuss geocaching possible ban? - translation, we invited them to our usual monthly dinner that cachers get together at that was that night. The next day it was reported that we had a serious meeting, translation - no media attended the event, the police officer arrived at the dinner though and actually APOLOGIZED to us as he had not heard about geocaching until the day before and Googled it and went on info from there. Have you Googled geocaching and bomb? You can see why it would appear negative. After he learned about it, that there was a local organization and so many in the area he realizing it was not as negative as first thought. At the dinner the officer and geocachers had a good time and talked about the spin of media. As a parent I can imagine the impact this has had on the family. I am sure there were phone calls and emails trying to contact you. The media contact me and local geocachers for interviews on the Ottawa incident. Some I am sure were positive such as a few post here, and some were looking to spin negative. Take a break, enjoy something else but do come back to geocaching. I encourage you to meet local cachers at events. Share stories and laughs. The other thing I always encourage, is share this story, the good, the bad and the ugly. What worked what did not? You may save someone from the same fate, or find that you are not the only one and have something in common. After the fact, it is easy to say it could have been different IF... Trust me as bad as it seems now, in a week it will be better, in months, years you will be laughing over the time that ...
  5. Magellan GC base map is street level worldwide. However it does not have auto routing or topo. If you want those suggest the 610 and added auto routing map (which provides voice directions) As a basic beginner geocaching unit though, the GC is a good unit. One you can drop on the trail, in a creek and it will still keep going. Has the cache info, holds 10,000 caches, but you will want to update to remove disabled and archive and add new fresh caches. Easy to connect to computer and drag drop pocket queries to. Yes does provide a go to line from where you are to where you want to go, the base map may tell you road side or off road in a park, may not show all creeks (again that would be topo of 610)
  6. Caches near the airport tend to be of larger sizes for TB's. Ones downtown around Parliment are smaller to avoid muggles removing them. You could do a search of larger sizes caches in areas you plan to go for bug drops.
  7. The CCC (Canada's Capital Cachers) whom I assume you are referring to as the other association in the opening post is open to all. Which makes them a family in the area. I see that others have pointed out that by accepting all it means that you might not always like everyone (just like family) but that there is someone for everyone and we pull together when we need to, and like family, disagree at times and sometimes louder then maybe we should. (average once a year on my 6 years with the group) Sorry, if you caught the group not at their best moment. The CCC has done a lot to communicate with different agencies in the Capital area on behalf of geocaching, such as the bomb squad , been a part of The EX with a display, and have held many workshops to help newbies and experience cachers learn new things and work together on keeping geocaching fun. I encourage you to come out to one of the events in the area and meet some of the many members. I am wondering if you are looking to form another association or if you are looking for people to cache with? I know of several caching circles in the area, splinters, SOBS, GEOMOB to name a few. New geocaching circles sprout up all the time, of like minded friends who enjoy geocaching when they have time. All of which come together at the family reunion of GAG events. Many individuals are seen at the monthly dinners and geoworkshops which have been going strong for several years. (both posted of GC) I wish you luck at forming your group and hope that you are open to all, which may mean accepting the very people you commented on in the OP. You are always welcome to meet the other cachers in the area by coming out to one of the events, we hold no grudges and would be happy to see you. As for your apology, you sound like your part of family and seem to fit right in, if you would like We will just assume we caught you at an off moment as well. hidnseek (One who dosn't worry about the numbers, but enjoys time with the friends I have made geocaching)
  8. At this time, Magellan Explorist series does not do Wherigo. Not sure if they will in the future. I don't believe the Nuvi's can either.
  9. It maybe the way you have map orientation set as: Is it north up or track up? track up may cause it to redraw when you turn as your direction has changed. Also for brightness try changing the power save feature of when it darkens the screen or adjust brightness to a setting you like.
  10. post on the CCC board at http://www.canadascapitalcachers.ca/forum/ when your in town. I am sure a few locals would be up for caching with you. All the above suggestions sound good so far too.
  11. Our local group does hold a monthly workshop, well attend by newbies where we answer questions and share info. It is common for a local to email a new cacher and point them to the local info again where questions are asked and answered. They are also invited out caching as there is a regular Saturday group. Our monthly has had an officer of the Ottawa bomb squad attend where discussions and visuals on good and bad containers were shared and concerns talked about. Is it perfect? no. Does it help? yes. We know that we will never be able to reach all the new cachers in the area, especially before they placed their first cache. We also know that the more we talk and reach out the more informed people are and they tell others. I have asked newbies at the workshop how they found us, to find that the local outdoor stores send them to the workshop to learn about GPS skills and geocaching. The workshop has enough cachers who have been around for a while and have experience to guide the newbies on what works and does not work.
  12. We have had 3 in Ottawa alone and NP you did not even list us.... Outcome from our last one a few years back.....clear containers in urban areas are best, no need to camo sticker them to death.
  13. It has great built in basemaps, street level but not topo maps. If your spending a lot of time deep in the woods you may prefer topo maps so you know where to cross a creek or go over/around a cliff area. It is great for paperless cache both in the rural and urban areas. I have found over 150 caches with it, no major issues at this time. If you just want it for the bread crumb trail in a wooded area you are fine. I don't know how deep backwoods you plan to go.
  14. I had a great time creating awesome memories. One point someone looked at me and commented I was soaked...was I? I never felt bothered by the rain and caching in it, I was having to good a time. The orange shirts know how to make a mega event rock Thanks to those who attended the after event too. See you all next year.
  15. Been using the GC model for a while now as part of their insiders program. It is a good GPS to start with. I noticed the picture looked different and asked Magellan, turns out it was a OLD photo and an updated one should be added soon.
  16. Timbuk2 messenger bags, colourful, various sizes. Design your own. Doubles as my everyday bag. Have a few sizes depending on mood. Goes urban to forest.
  17. You can delete them all from the unit...or as I have done just open the folder when you have it connected delete the GPX file you want to update and send a new one in...assuming that you send separate GPS files for trads, multis or how ever you want to do it.
  18. It has a suspend mode that helps saves your batteries (I cached one evening came home forgot to turn it off and was still able to cache the next morning before batteries died, before my GPS would be dead come morning if I forgot to turn off. I have used both rechargeable and regular batteries. You have the ability to tell unit what battery type (lithium, Alkaline or rechargeable) I was able to ignore the (your batteries are dying power off screen ) and still cache for about an hr and a bit no issues, then it just faded. (I did get the warning again a few minutes before it final faded)
  19. It shows park outlines, main waterways but not all creeks and topo lines.
  20. Then I took off all those caches put in 2339 caches I want for the moment and it took 2mins 40s...I guess if you have nothing load 10,000 all at once the first power on will take a long time, but if you add them over time the start ups are less as there is stuff on the unit already. Will test that theory tomorrow. ***of course those long winded cache pages always have the most valuable info to solve the puzzle at the very end too
  21. I am in the camp if needing the ability to do a projection from a given point other then where I am. Why should I stand around and not be able to do what those with other units can? (projections are used often around here) But hear it is being worked on. did some testing (cause I got curious after moose mobs post): 9093 caches and it powered on in 2mins 32 secs on initial power up next one took 40 secs 3644 caches and it took 24 sec Appears another brand has a cache page character count of about 8192 before the cut the listing off, I was able to get a cache page with about 4x that with out being cut off...then again how often is a cache page THAT long?
  22. I got the unit without the manual and was able to figure it out easily. If I did not find what I was looking for, I reported it. The few issues I have had sound like they will be dealt with in the next firmware so waiting for that.
  23. I have found over 40 caches with it now and have been O-3m at most GZs even in cedars which are good at through units off. This is within normal range. I have not had a DNF geocaching with it...yet. To have street level maps and paperless cache at this price range is a good.
  24. I just saw this disclaimer on a cache "A warning to Oregon/Dakota/Colorado users - This cache description exceeds the 8192 character limit on the paperless caching feature. You will either need to print off the cache page, or have access to it through other means." I downloaded the GPX file opened it up and found that I had the full information nothing was cut or lost so no need for Magellan users of this unit to print a page off. I have been using the unit for geocaching and have found it handy. I have provided feedback to Magellan on a few things. As a base unit this is good. Nice to see Magellan get back in to the market.
  25. You have the breadcrumb trail so you can see where you have hiked. You also have ability to organize and display geocaches based on type, size, terrain, difficulty....do you only want to do 1/1 trads large? sort from your 1000's to display just those.
