  1. I've noticed these AWESOME cache-data displays on some of these posts and I looked into one of them and found link where I can set mine up as such. Unfortunately, it was PC only (it actually required a download...?!) and I have a Mac.

How do I get cool stat boards and stuff like that for a Mac and, preferably, without downloading some type of application?

    Thanks!

    ;)

  2. Okay, I have a few more Platinum-level membership benefits to suggest, the first few courtesy of my wife Sue:

    • Whereas PQs run by Premium members are limited to 500 cache in the returns, Platinum members would enjoy an upper limit of 2,000 caches per run.
    • Whereas Premium members are currently allowed to run a maximum of 5 PQs per day, Platinum members would be allowed an upper limit of 15 PQs per day.
    • And here is one of my own afterthoughts on benefits: Platinum members get use of the Groundspeak helicopter for one hour/one trip per year at the reduced Platinum rate of $50 per hour.
    • And one more: Platinum members would be allowed up to two days free stay every five years on the top-secret invisible Groundspeak recreational space station in orbit around the earth. B)
    • And one more: Platinum members will be allowed to log up to 1,000 "attended" logs on each event cache! B)B)

I got first dibs on the helicopter! Anyone wanna go split with me on it for a few hours while we make fast work of some otherwise arduous 5/5's?!

  3. ***Went out for some Geocaching the other day and mostly struck out. The 12 - 15" of snow we have received in the past 2 weeks is making it difficut. The only cache I did find was a good old solid metal ammo can.***

Are you blaming the Snow for falling on a Cache?

Hey, there's an IDEA....a Cache Umbrella...stick it in the ground next to the cache to protect it from the elements.....LOL.

I've got a better idea! How about hooking up an electric heater to the ammo cans, with a thermostat? That way, whenever it gets below 0, the heater kicks in and keeps any snow off it. ;)

"Found cache in puddle of water in the middle of a snow bank...replaced soaked log and replaced batteries for cache heater. TFTC!"

  4. Funny thing. I noticed my Etrex Legend does not turn on by itself when connected to the computer nor does it show up as any type of drive on the "finder" or "explorer" window, however, it DOES receive data when I send it.

Did you manually turn on the Legend once it is physically connected?

Downloads should work after you allow it to boot up. Should you have it connected for more than a minute or two, you may want to set the GPS setting to work without detecting satellites. This will allow data transfer and viewing but it won't acquire satellites and it will save your batteries.

  5. Not to be technical, but I was under the impression that "geo" meant earth. So aren't caches that are submerged really hydrocaches? And caches in space, a stratocache? I'm not sure if there are any websites for either of those, but this one is for geocaches. B)

    What holds the water, smartie-pants?!

    ;)

  6. I am soooo peeved that you have also stumbled upon my idea for a organ-donor hotel cache for transplantable organs. I created such a cache over two months ago, where folks can leave a fresh and transplantable organ, packed in freezer chill packs in a cooler, at a cache in return for a smiley. Unfortunately, the local reviewers are giving me a very hard time about this cache. In fact, I plan to start an entire thread right after Christmas devoted to illustrating how badly the reviewers are picking on me by refusing to publish this organ hotel cache.

Well, here is another great idea! I saw this and started designing my own "Leave a DNA Sample" cache.

    What do ya think?!

    ;)

  7. I have two thoughts on this subject that come to mind right away:

    1. I would skip the single great annual party in a different part of the country each year for various reasons: Geocaching is international and we would either have to have numerous parties each year in numerous places or people would complain that it is never close enough to them and, besides, any kind of luncheon or meet'n'greet can very quickly eat up any funds raised.

    2. Having eliminated the largest funds-consuming portion of the project (the annual luncheon, which has apparently caused a lot of dismay...see above) I would set the price at $5.00 a month. I say this because I think FAR MORE MONEY would be raised by the number of people who would pay $5.00 a month than by the number of people who would pay $9.00 a month.

The above is my opinion and should be taken with a granule of sodium chloride.

    Thanks.

    ;)

  8. By the way , I also figured out what was going on with the "only downloaded 15 caches" problem.

As it turns out, it DID download all of the caches in the list, however, when one selects to list them by closest first, it only shows the closest fifteen. I tried listing it the other way (by name) and they all showed up.

    I AM LOVING IT!

I get my data cable for my PDA in the mail some time next week and then I will be ALL SET for paperless caching!!

    ;)

  9. list your waypoints, at the top, select the left menu option next to the X

Or go to your Trip computer screen, select the top left menu option, select reset and use that delete option.

Sorry it took so long to respond to this.

    It worked!!

    Thank you so much!!

    ;)

You can also hit the page button until you get to the "Trip Computer" page. Then use the joystick to select the first icon in the upper right corner. Then hit "Reset." That will bring up a menu that will allow you clear whatever you want to clear.

    VERY cool.

I'm going to try it on my credit report.

I'll let you know how it works.

  10. Do I have to completely erase all the data on the GPSr to make sure I don't have caches on it that I have already found?

Yes, to keep an organized GPS it is useful to blow out all waypoints from time to time before re-uploading.

    1. I would gladly delete all the cache data on my GPS each time before uploading if I only knew how.

    2. I have a feeling I can only upload 15 caches to my GPS despite the file having 200 due to me not having registered the MacCaching application yet. Any truth to this?

  11. The devices of Garmin, Magellan (and others) are more designed for outdoor use. But nothing keeps you from trying, off course!

Was that "of course" or actually intended to be "off course"

    It was funny, either way.

    ;)

Seriously, I would have to agree that a handheld Garmin or Magellan unit it s real way to go if you get into geocaching.

  12. Whatever happened to customer satisfaction? I would be significantly more satisfied if Jeremy would just pick me up at my front door in his new aston martin and drive me around to the different caches.

Jeremy? Did you see that up there?

Put that out on Ebay every once in a while and I'll bet you get some rich cacher to take you up on it. That would pay for the additional servers required for the new, versatile "a la carte" PQ system where everyone can request as much or as little data as they desire as many times a day as they like.

    ;)

  13. In Diego, when we adopt a cache, we leave the name of the cacher and add "adopted by ...".

Yup, same here for notable caches. I recently adopted the first cache placed in Alabama, GC126 Trussville Civitan and kept the previous owners in the owner name field.

Not an elegant solution, but it works.

Wow! Being responsible for maintaining the first cache placed in your state.

    That's kinda cool!

    ;)

  14. Hi,

We have had to move away from our cache and temporarily disabled it. We now have another member interested in adopting our cache. We really want the cache to remain however the tool/link for adoption will not work.

    http://www.geocaching.com/adopt/

When I search for the cache name "B&A Stillwater Cache" it comes back with NOT FOUND ?

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Log into your geocaching.com account and go to your profile.

Click on your list of caches and locate it that way.

Once you find your Stillwater Cache, locate its identifier (like GC34A56 or whatever) in the upper right hand corner of the cache page. This is what you will use to identify the cache you are putting up for adoption.

  15. Ok. I downloaded the manual from your link just to be certain it was the same thing as mine and...it is.

The ONLY mention of deleting waypoints is at the top of page 27 and it only explains how to delete an individual waypoint and not the whole lot of them.

To make matters worse, when I use the "find" feature to select a waypoint, there is never a "delete" button to select as indicated in the instructions and I can't even delete ONE waypoint let alone ALL of them.

If I select a waypoint from a list, there is no delete button. If I go into the waypoint by clicking on it with the joystick, it offers "goto" and "map" and "ok" but there is no "delete" button anywhere that I can see.

I know I'm doing something terribly wrong but, I just can't figure out what.

(On a side note, I JUST realized...looking at my list of waypoints on my GPS, there are only FIFTEEN waypoints and the file I downloaded had 200! And, NO, I have not been deleting them. I couldn't if I wanted to.)

    aaaaauuuuuggggghhhhh!

I'm ready to hollow this thing out and make it into a cache that will hopefully get muggled.

    What am I doing wrong?!

  16. I looked into trying to be a reseller at one time for Garmin and Magellan and I recall something about specifically prohibiting businesses that sold their product by online auction. They want a professional brick and mortar and/or professional storefront website. The discontinued stuff, of course, will be found on Ebay.

I also remember them saying I had to sell at least so many thousands of dollars worth of product every quarter or something and I was looking to start out smaller than that with my budget.

    ;)

Having said that, I but stuff from Ebay all the time and JUST purchased my Etrex Legend from Ebay and it works fine!

I ALWAYS look for TWO things: Percentage of positive feedback (99.0% or higher is usually pretty safe) and lots of sales (power sellers don't get that way by ripping people off).

  17. I have just start using pocket queries and something I rad in one of the forums made me think that, when I download a new pocket query, it completely replaces the old one I uploaded to my GPS.

I originally ran a query for 200 items starting on my closest cache and including everything that isn't mine and that I haven't already found. I took the emailed results and loaded them into MacCaching and, then, onto my Legend.

That day, I went out and found half a dozen caches and logged them online.

After logging the recent finds, I ran the query again and dragged the NEW emailed results into MacCaching AFTER I selected everything IN MacCaching and deleted it first. (To clarify: I deleted the original query results from MacCaching and then clicked and dragged the NEW query results into MacCaching.)

Finally, I loaded the new results into my GPSr using the MacCaching application once again.

Then I looked for a cache I had recently logged as "found" (prior to running the 2nd query) and IT WAS STILL ON THE LIST.

Do I have to completely erase all the data on the GPSr to make sure I don't have caches on it that I have already found? Is there a way to delete all of them at once from the GPSr?

Is the MacCaching file supposed to delete the old one completely because it replaces it with the new one of the same name? (That is how I understood it originally.)

    Thanks for your help.

  18. Decommissioned GPS satellites are parked in a disposal orbit about 300 miles higher than the active satellite constellation. I'm not sure why, but they have decided it's a better solution than letting it deorbit and burn up.

Just maybe they can be re-used in a wartime situation if other satellites are shot down..

Wow! SOMEONE high up in the government sure takes geocaching seriously!

    :)
