  1. Hi All, I'm heading up to Fort William in January and just looking for some locals to suggest some caches in and around the area to do if I have some spare time? Is there any equivalent to the Little Quest series in Scotland (a cache in each county)? Is there any local, must do caches? Anyway hope someone can help, obviously as its January I'm expecting snow, so please take that into consideration. Regards CC
  2. Hi all. Need some help, a couple of times I've tried to work out how to make a PQ to download all the caches that another user owns. There has been a couple of occasions where I really liked a particular cachers caches (tongue twister) and wanted to download them all but without having to manually do it. Is there any way to do this? Regards CC
  3. I’m interested in geocaching at the more adventurous end of the scale, but I’m looking for other people to possibly accompany me on my adventures. For instance I’d like to take a multi-day (around 6) walk across the lakes district taking in many peaks as I go. Unfortunately in recent caching trips I’ve realised how much time is spent in one spot looking for the caches, which I think my muggle friends would find testing their patients when they want to just walk. So I’m looking for people who are similarly keen to combine a bit of adventure with their caching. Walking, climbing, mountaineering (possibly), mountain biking etc. combined with caching. Camping and wild camping would probably be main choice across multi-day adventures. Hopefully finding many of the harder caches and having some great memories. People interested please feel free to get in contact. I’m a male approaching 30 based in the north west and not fussed what gender or age people are, just looking for people I get on with, I have some common ground with and have a similar desire for their caching exploits. I’ve got no set timescales for this, as I’ve a very busy life with work and studies etc. Regards CC
  4. Ok so I know there are quite a few posts about this. However I'm looking at the newest models of GPS, All of which are by garmin. I currently have an iPhone 4, which I'll always have with me as it's my phone and will continue to use it to log caches. I also have an etrex vista HCx, which is great. I recently bought a satmap as I wanted a new gps with OS mapping on it and was attracted by the large screen, being able to buy 1:25k maps for anywhere over the uk. However my advice to anyone thinking of doing so is don't! It crashed all the time, was incredibly slow and was for menl effectively unusable. I really did try to like it, it's a bristish company so wanted to support them, but had far too many problems; the compass was very slow updating which ment I over compensated for it, there was very little customisation on what data was shown and being a quite demanding user (I use several thousand wps loaded at a time) the map slowed to a crawl. There is a feature that can turn on a set of wps and turn others off. But the length of time required to do so is unmanagable especially in the field (over 20mins) and would often crash. But it ment you could do anything with it while you waited for it to carry out it's task. It's basically outclassed. Although my etrex vista doesn't have mapping, it's better than the satmap in every other aspect IMO. Hence I am looking for another gps, but garmin have just released a new range of gps units. So now I'm trying to decide between: 62s, 62st, 62sc, 62stc or one of the Montana series 650, 650t?? I will still have my iPhone with me, and am likely to have a dedicated camera with me as well. But there may be times when I leave the camera behind. I'm just wondering which one to go for? Comments/suggestions? My thinking is the Montana has a nice big screen. But I do wonder if the exposed antenna on the 62 series might lead to better accuracy. I've in the past been against touch screens on gps units. But they are supposed to be glove friendly which is good. And I've been reading unconfirmed reports that the 62s has less internal memory than the 62st and that the topo on the 62st is an out of date one as they can't fit the upto date topo on the internal memory. What does the topo cover? Is it world wide? European wide? Or just your own country? Sorry for the long post. Regards and thanks. CC
  5. I'm sure this question gets asked plenty of times, but as new models get released the answer may well change. I currently have an iPhone 4 which I mostly use to find caches with geosphere and the official geocaching AP by Groundspeak. I also have a garmin etrex vista HCx which I use for longer day trips where the iPhones battery won't last all day using the gps feature and also where accuracy may prove to be a problem (tree cover etc). I'm also a gsak user. I'm now looking at getting another gps unit and relegate my etrex to a backup device. But I have fairly demanding requirements: I need it to be able to be operated easily with gloves on, so touch screens are not ideal. I do the following sports which I want to use it for; Rock climbing/mountaineering. Mountain biking Snowboarding Scrambling & hiking And of course geocaching. I would like mapping available for the until, paperless caching is preferable but not essential as I will probably take my iPhone with me when caching just to log them even if I don't use its gps function. But maps if the uk and other countries are important. And ideally OS maps or of similar standard. But I suppose accuracy is the most important feature. Camera feature isn't important. A unit that has appealed for some time is the satmap active 10, but as I'm not up to date with various models by other brands, there maybe better options out there. Regards and thanks CC
  6. I maybe there, not sure yet. Hopefully will find out in the next few weeks. Will repost or edit this one when I know for sure. Cheers CC
  7. I'm just looking for recommendations of useful software for all aspects of geocaching. Be it free, or requiring a purchase. I'm just looking to see whats out there and what people use. The only one I really know of GSAK. Any other suggestions/recommendations? Regards CC
  8. I'm planning on going to Mega Wales event and as I've not climbed in the area before it seems a shame to waste the chance, so I was thinking about climbing either a day ir two either before or after the event. Trad preferable, it sport (not sure if there is any in the area) or bouldering. Currently I'm well out of practice and not on form so grades would likely be up to Severe, f5+ and V3. Anyone interested let me know. Cheers CC
  9. I currently have and iPhone 4 and am just wondering what the android phones are like for caching. Do they have most or all of the same apps? How well do they work etc? Are there any particular phones that stand out as good for caching, maybe perhaps they have good battery life and a very accurate GPS etc.? Many thanks Regards CC
  10. I was blind for looking. Don't know why I'd not spotted it before. but thanks for the help and humouring me. CC
  11. Hi all, Is there anyway to do a pocket query etc for a journey your planning on taking? So you could see the caches with in a couple if miles of the route you intend to take? I can't see I there is any easy way to do it, other than use the Groundspeak iPhone app and just search as you go. But I'd rather have a PQ that showed me what was on my route so I cannolab where I want to stop off etc and if there is many motorway madness caches along the way. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Regards CC
  12. Thought you may be interested in the reply I got from garmin when I queried the cost. I can see why they do this as it keeps costs down for them. But when I've got a unit that is less than 2 months old only needing a very basic and what should be a cheap repair I find it difficult to swallow their justification for the cost. If my unit was 5 yes old and had some problems/ warn casing or similar issues I would be quite happy. One solution doesn't fit all. Garmins reply: Garmin do not repair the majority of faulty unit's returned, as the spares are not available to enable a service engineer to do this and by replacing the unit like for like for the customer this also speeds up the turn around time. This fee is a fixed rate fee and includes a replacement unit and a new 12 month warranty and so this is far more cost effective than purchasing a new unit. From experience it is far more expensive for an end user to import and replace the screen themselves and so I do recommend this fee to you. This is all Garmin can offer you and so if this is something you wish to continue with then please contact the support team below to provide payment details and obtain an RMA number... Support: 08082380000 If there is anything else I can help you with then please let me know. Alternatively you can search for a solution here: http://www.garmin.com/support Thank you. 13. I've just ha a quote back from gamin for the repair at £66.66 Inc vat. Which seems a lot of money for a cracked piece of plastic. Particularly when the display is unaffected. Is there any 3rd party companies that do repairs?
  14. Hey all Unforunately I have a massif crack in the screen of my gps. I want to find out how much it will cost to repair who can repair it for me and how long it's likely to take. Luckily the display itself doesn't appear to be affected. Any recommendations/advice would be appreciated. Regards CC
  15. Hi all, I'm pretty new here, so this has probably been done in the past. Just wondering what's the furthest a cache has been from their home when they were FTF? although if you found one then moved house at a later date making the distance further, that doesn't count. Just the distance from your home at the time. Just curious.I've not got any FTF yet so can't post mine Regards CC
  16. Hey, is there anyone out there that has used lots of the various iPhone apps, that could give a review of each and pros/cons and some recommendations at to which to buy? I'm currently using groundspeaks own app, which seems perfectly good. But as I've not tried others, I don't know if there are any good features on other apps that I'm missing out on. I just rather not have to spend the money on all of them to try them to make up my mind. Regards CC
  17. I am curious to know when you place a cache and it is to be reviewed by whoever, does the reviewer publish it once they have completed their task, or do they review it and then is it down to the owner to publish it at their discretion? Any help much appreciated. Regards CC
