  1. If people are confirming the cache is gone, then why are they allowing the next posts to be "Found it" logs to begin with? I've heard reviewers can now delete found it logs, do we know if this is true or not? Maybe they don't because people like quoting the "Found it = didn't find it" It wouldn't be the reviewer's job to do it. It could be the cache owner's job to do it, but since they haven't bothered to fix the cache, they probably won't bother to worry about the logs either. True. The reviewers in France wouldn't have the job of deleting bogus found it logs. They are volunteers (like all other reviewers) and probably have better things to do then read every found it log on a soon-to-be-archived or recently-archived cache to determine if it represents a real find or not.

  3. I got all 3 souvenirs this summer. I'm an official agent! I did not cheat I went out and found 3 caches, although I had to do some time-planning do to work.
  4. I'm 20 but glad other young people are participating in Geocaching. I have a couple friends into geocaching but no one my age doing it.
  5. You need to click "view photographic evidence" to see each of the images that create the encoded message. B. Yeah I am viewing all the "Evidence" and nothing seems to reveal the code word.
  6. I never received any of these supposed emails. That is despite careful checking of all the boxes to send me stuff, logging out and back in, making sure nothing was getting bounced, etc. My overall impression is that the August activity backfired badly; rather than being a successful marketing campaign, it instead highlighted gc.com's inability to fix a pretty important problem. ETA: I take it back! I got the third email today! So at least the email problems are partly fixed. i NEVER got an email about either mission. But I am checking out the current mission. Tried "Team", "Geocaching" "Green" "Flag" nothing that makes sense seems to be working and everybody says this one is easy.
  7. No, the arguments I've presented support my claim that NAs can and should typically be filed without visiting GZ. Using NAs in that manner would directly contradict the instructions specifically given in the Help Centre. The counter-arguments presented by commenters in this thread are not compelling enough to persuade me to disregard that. You are ignoring the part of the guidelines a cache owner agrees to when listing their hide: Owner is responsible for visits to the physical location. You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to ensure it is in proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.), or posts a Needs Maintenance log. Temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have addressed the problem. You are permitted a reasonable amount of time – generally up to 4 weeks – in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing. There have been a number of times where the Help Centre gives confusing instructions or one part contradicts the other part. For years the Letterbox Hybrid definition said LBHs "may" contain a stamp. In the Help Center's glossary it says "If there is a stamp inside a Letterbox Hybrid, it is not an item intended for trade". Try listing a cache as an LBH but in the description say that there is no stamp because the Help Center says "If there is a stamp inside". See how that flies with the reviewer. Currently the Help Center http://support.Groun...=kb.page&id=134 says: "There are several instances when using a "Needs Archived" log is appropriate. Here are some example situations that warrant a Needs Archived note." then goes on to list 2 situations - law enforcement and missing. I hardly think that if a cache is just a lid with camo tape on it, abandoned with no response from the owner, that an NA can't be logged and that a reviewer won't archive it. Actually, I know it can be logged as an NA and a reviewer will archive it if the owner doesn't go out to fix it. The person who logs the NA after logging an NM and doesn't have to go out to back to ground zero a month later to determine if the cache may have been replaced even though the owner didn't log on to the site, and didn't post a note or OM. The owner must respond. The Help Centre is a bit hodge podge. But it does go on to say that a reviewer may... Do nothing. Some Needs Archived notes are logged purely as a matter of frustration, either because of a personal dispute with the geocache owner or an inability to find the geocache. New geocachers sometimes mistakenly assume that because they cannot find the geocache when their GPS zeroes out, it *must* be missing and therefore should be archived. Other folks simply choose the wrong log option by accident. So let the reviewer decide. I suspect that malicious NAs are a very small part of the NAs that are logged. Even NAs in error must be a rather small issue. Anyway, it's the owner's responsibility to deal with the NA and log an OM explaining why the NA was posted inappropriately. An NA in error has never happened to me in 15 years of cache ownership with 62 total cache hides. Never even had an NM posted in error. I have had ONE NA log on my caches, but less than a couple weeks after it was posted a inseparable geocaching couple found the cache and said it was a very clever hiding spot. I had one person tell me the NA was phony. I've seen some caches that are in GOOD condition get NAs because the newbie cachers think they found it (or where its supposed to be) and then the "cache" or "hiding place" is destroyed.
  8. You really don't understand about reviewers, do you? Are you under the impression that they are employees of geocaching.com? We have a reviewer who looks at existing caches and does exactly what Pond Bird states. PB's percentages may not be off but he is pretty much correct about the process. Our reviewer looks at a cache and if something looks askew, logs a temporary disable note. The cache gets archived a month later if there's no response from its owner. Our reviewer (I live near PB so it's the same one) does this occasionally. I think every few months or so he will Disable or post Reviewer notes on caches that have NM logs that have been ignored or are otherwise in bad shape. Somewhere between 1-3 months if nothing happens he will take further action. He does not do this often. He will usually take action quickly if there was a NA posted. Even if a NA is posted he takes many things into account before making a decision to archive the cache. I think our reviewer is very good at what he does. What I'm unsure about the is 75% of caches with NM logs are eventually archived. I find that to be no where near accurate Not my percentages, since fizzy magic thought I said it (it was edexter)
  9. You really don't understand about reviewers, do you? Are you under the impression that they are employees of geocaching.com? I'm sure edexter (who actually typed that) knows that reviewers volunteer to review listings and take action on caches they feel are not being maintained. I know this as well.
  10. Probably was mistyped, but now the owner is performing maintenance by putting a stamp in the cache so that it is a letterbox hybrid.
  11. A good flat and phillips head screw driver will be the tool of the trade when you are having trouble with them. Exactly what I said! The cache is a tall pvc pipe with slots up the side, and you have to use popsicle sticks to pop a ball with the cache in it up the tube. Takes a lot of coordination and time. I told 'Tudles that we could just unscrew the pipe and upend it. Would have taken a lot less time. Interesting idea, to use the Frog Character seen at Mega Events on top of a pipe, - found one where you had to put water in a pipe to get the cache to come up, but I guess if my fingers were longer I could've pulled it out anyways. Ah, the Signal's mine. I own several of them. I brought him to take a picture of the official geocaching mission. Maybe I should rename him Ethan Hunt. I heard he was named Signal, but I forgot so I said "Frog Character". Some Mega Event groups are now asking for their own mascot and asking event go-ers to nominate a name and animal for them to be attending those events may give you a souvenir I understand that now.
  12. The reviewer posts a note if he/she agrees that there is enough information the cache is not being maintained by its owner after the logs suggesting problems (or lack of people able to find it and an absent owner). Sometimes, COs make mistakes and then they maintain their cache once the reviewer gets involved, or they believe the Reviewer WILL get involved if they don't perform maintenance (even if it is just verifying the cache is there in good condition or that they will repair/replace cache soon). They can ignore the reviewer, but if they do, then their cache is likely to get archived for "Non-responsiveness"

  14. Whether or not a cache owner chooses to give puzzle hints is entirely at their discretion. Using NM or NA in this situation is inappropriate. You are not entitled to receive help or hints from a cache owner. If someone abused the NM or NA logs on one of my caches in this manner, I would immediately file a complaint to put a stop to the harassment. Totally inexcusable and a disgraceful way to treat cache owners. I wasn't asking about posting an NA if the cache owner didn't give you help, but if you couldn't visit the location and there were many people not finding the cache. and the CO was not checking on it to see if it was still there or not. But if I can't visit a cache (whether or not I know its location) I am in no position to comment on the validity of whether or not it was there according to others. If you don't even have the puzzle solved, why are you worried about whether or not the cache is there? Tricky puzzles get DNFs all the time. Cache owners are not obligated to handhold n00bs or run out to check on a cache every time someone tries to look for one at the posted coordinates and fails miserably. A DNF means "Did Not Find." It doesn't mean it isn't there. With puzzles there needs to be extra flexibility because of the possibility of error. The cache owner is the one best equipped to determine if a DNF warrants further action. If people look for a cache at posted coords and fail miserably then they didn't read the description that says "Cache is NOT at the posted coordinates"
  15. I figured out how to do the "Tips & Tricks" so yes, I am NOW getting the emails and subscribed to the blog. I don't know what other souvenirs are coming in August besides the 2 Mission ones and the International Geocaching Day one but I'm sure they'll tell us in a couple weeks. There are no other souvenirs in August. These 3 Mission GC ones and the International Geocaching Day are it. Nothing else. Where does it say there will be no other souvenirs in August 2016 besides the 3? If you're right, then the souvenirs after that will be in September, but I hope they tell us at least 15 days before. This IS the summer souvenir promotion that they have been doing every year. This year's is the 3 Mission GC souvenirs and one on International Geocaching day, like always. That's it. That's the summer souvenirs. There is a CITO souvenir that you can earn during September. Well then they will announce the CITO one if there is going to be one. I can't wait to find out what's planned for October.
  16. It usually depends on how big the park is and how big the particular pavilion is that you plan on using. If you can find a phone number or email for the Town or village Parks Department that would be best. If not I would say just call town hall or something like that and ask if it's required for you to reserve it. You might not have to There is no "parks" department on either site so should I call the village clerk or mayor or town supervisor? I found this on the village of Newark website. Or this website, depending on which park you're planning on using. http://www.co.wayne.ny.us/bg_parks/ I specifically said it was a village/town park so I will call the AECC.

  18. What if theres been numerous complaints about a cache needing repairs and the owner removed the email info from their account so they can't be contacted about the cache? One cache I know of got archived because there were issues and the owner never logged into the account the cache was listed under, nor did they contact the reviewer at all.... If you visit a cache, and you agree that it needs repairs, and a previous NM log has gone unanswered for some time, go ahead and log an NA with a full description of what you found when you visited. By "some time" I mean a month or two. Not everyone is 100% dedicated to geocaching at all times. A little bit of patience and kindness for others goes a long way. Logging a Needs Archived the day after someone else's Needs Maintenance is just going to create angst and further damage your reputation in the community. You don't need to scan every cache in your area looking for unanswered NM logs. That's not your responsibility as a member of the general geocaching population. Reviewers already have that taken care of. Your responsibility is to write honest and detailed logs about the caches you choose to visit. What if it's a puzzle cache and the owner is unresponsive to answer questions about how to solve the puzzle, preventing you from visiting the location yourself to see if you can find the "missing" cache or not.

  20. Was this a virtual cache? Maybe if the person knew the answers from when they were there they could answer them and say that they were there. Traditional Then they didn't find it. I found the locations of many caches on trips in High school. Come home to see "oh theres a cache at EPCOT" I was just there. But I'm not logging caches because I didn't actually "find" them even though I was at the location at sometime.
