  1. Hmmmm that's very curious. So then the theory there is that I could select the map show it as a USGS topo. Save it to my laptop and then print it for my students. I'm gpoing to have to give this a trial run. Can I save it as a 1:24k? Or is it preset to some other dimension? Ultimately the goal is to be able to print a map sheet to 1:24k so that they can use protractors and or compass for land navigation training (minus a GPS being available). Ed
  2. I have mapsource with the topo maps for my region. And I know I can print the selected maps but I need them to have grid lines when printed. Does Mapsource do this? if so how do I make that happen? Ed
  3. I have a need to print maps. I have been using MapTech software but the laptop that it was on no longer exists and the CD's are no where to be found. I'm prepared to purchase something for this new machine and when looking at the Maptech website the standard edition does what I need it to do BUT............. it is windows XP only according to the system requirements thay have posted. The Terrain Navigator Pro is Vista compatible however its over $270. And frankly it has a lot more features than what I really need from the program. Anyone have any suggestions on a GOOD product that will be compatible with my Garmin Vista HCx and my HP laptop running Vista Premium? As a rule I need exactly what the MapTech standard edition does as a minimum with out getting to absurd price wise. Ed Fernley
  4. Thank you....This has all now worked.... ed
  5. I know this is going to seem odd but this does not work for me. I uninstalled my mapsource topo. I copied all 3 disc's to a folder C:Garmin/topo as directed. I went to run, entered the regedit. I opened the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Opened Software and................................. Nothing there named Garmin................... So I searched around for it in all the foldes under software and found it in a folder labled "Wow6432Node" I then clicked on: Mapsource Then Products It's empty.!!!!!!!!!! When I open my C drive I can see the Garmin folder and inside it is the Topo folder and all its data. I'm not much of a computer savvy guy so I'm well beyond my zone. Any advice? Ed Fernley
  6. You must have an older set of topos, because I have Topo U.S. 2008, which is in DVD format, and I was given the option to download the progam with all the maps right to my hard drive. After completing the initial installation, I've never needed to use the disc again to download maps to my GPSr. Yes you folks are correct. It's an older version. And thank you for your assisstance. 7. I'm not sure if it's possible, but, can I load my mapSource Topo discs onto my laptop (or a thumb drive) so that when I start mapsource i don't have to insert my Map disc? I don't want to carry my map Cd's around. If I can do that how do I set my Mapsource up so that it knows which file the maps are in? Hmmmm. Do my questions make sense? Ed
  8. WOW Thank you for the fast response! I posted that same question on the Garmin forum and 685 people viewed it and not one offered a suggestion. Ed
  9. Why such poor owners manual for Vista HCx and How do I manually enter waypoint coordinates if I know them?
  10. I am the new owner of a Garmin Etrex Vista HCx. According to the manual I can enter waypoint data manually. However I cannot seem to figure out how and the owners manual leaves MUCH to be desired on this (and many other) topic. I have the data for several locations I would like to put into the GPS without actually going there. For instance lets say I see a Geocache I want to put into my device. How do do that? I dont want to project it using azimuth and distance from a known location. Help! Ed Fernley
