  1. Thanks to all for your advice and assistance! My wife has decided that she has a significant emotional attachment to our first placed cache, and she wants to take it with us to hide near our house in northern Michigan. So, it's looking like we'll be temporarily disabling the cache, then re-enabling it with new coordinates and information...and likely a back story on where it was originally placed and how it was moved. Have y'all seen cachers do this before? Dave
  2. Hello. My wife and I are the owners of a cache in the Columbus, Ohio area. The cache is Stoneridge. We will be moving to northern Michigan in mid-July. If there are any interested cachers interested in assuming ownership, we would like to keep the cache running and transfer ownership to someone. Additionally, anyone having advice on how best to transfer ownership, your advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Dave & Shelly aka Wojo1024
  3. I just recently had a problem with my GPSMap 60Cx. We were getting set to head home from a camping trip, so I powered on the 'ol GPS to guide us home. It powered up but none of the buttons would work. I dicconnected the power to force a shutoff, and much to my dismay it would not power back up. I pulled the batteries for the trip and attempted to restart when back home...nothing. I contacted Garmin tech support. They had me try a couple of things to no avail. They determined that I must have had a bad DC power cable and thought it likely that it fried the unit. They instructed me to send the unit in for warranty repair and that they would be sending out a new DC power cable. The next day I received the new DC cable...very prompt. In about 5 days I received my GPS back...or a reasonable facsimile thereof. They were unable to repair my GPS so they replaced it with a new unit. As an added bonus they sent all of the gear that you would receive with a new purchase...USB cable, lanyard, belt clip, 64mb micro SD, etc... They also shipped with the unit an additional DC power cable. I've read on these boards some of the positive comments with Garmin customer support. I'm just glad that my experience mirrored what others have experienced.

  5. Items in our pack: Flashlight Wet Wipes Bags for CITO Pencils Camera Spare Batteries Exchange Items Found Travel Bugs Cammo Duct Tape (Used for touching up our cache, and to repair other folk's caches where their container was cracked and open to the elements.)
  6. If you could do something for us it'd be very cool, and most appreciated. We have a Garmin GPSMap 60Cx. We are of Polish descent. Some ideas that I came up with are something with the Polish eagle with a geocaching background, or a Polish eagle with a geo shield on it's chest...? From there I'll leave it to your best judgement and imagination, as I'm sure that whatever you come up with will exceed our expectations. I truly admire your talent for this, and your generosity in creating these for folks you only know through this forum. Dave & Shelly
  7. We just signed up today for Premium. Three bucks a month seems a mere pittance to support the website and forum...which support our addiction!
  8. We placed our first cache this past weekend. We read all of the FAQ's, we studied other folks' cache pages, and we read the advice given here in these forums. Armed with that we found a hiding place, created a cache container, loaded it up, hid it, and created our cache page. Here is the result: Stoneridge My take...hide one and let the experienced cachers/critics offer their opinions. Take it as constructive criticism, retain what you agree with, and use it to make improvement to your game. By the same token, should I run across somebody who offers an opinion that is more mean-spirited than constructive I'll feel free to flame them right back...or ignore them, depending on the mood I'm in that day.
  9. We just found one of these in a cache the other day. Being relatively new to this, we didn't know what it was we found other than that it was a travel bug. Too bad the contest if over!
  10. Glad that wasn't the case here.
  11. Good news. The cache was not stolen. It was moved to a different hiding place by a cacher. I went out this morning and verified that all is OK, and put it back in its original hiding spot. The cache has been reenabled!
  12. We planted the cache on Saturday, and had three visitors on Sunday.
  13. Well, our first cache went from good to bad in a hurry. After just two days our cache has gone missing. We hunted around and could find no sign of it whatsoever. I've disabled the cache until we can rebuild it and find a new location. We thought that we had hidden it quite well, as compared with other caches that we have found. Very disappointing.
  14. Thanks! The FAQ and help pages were pretty informative. We had a blast planting it. Woke up this morning and had notifications that 3 people found it yesterday. I'm thinking there's one more as the three that logged their find on the website said in their logs that they didn't find the Travel Bug that was in the cache. We had fun loading the cache. We ended up at our local dollar store, where they were selling $1 grab bags. They had different bags for a boy, girl and home. We bought a boy and girl grab bag, and it was fun opening them to see what we'd be putting into the cache. When it's time to restock the cache we'll be picking up some more grab bags!
  15. Or find a Fry's store near you. They have deals on 1G SD cards all the time near me. You can pick up 128MB SDs for less than 10$ with in-store rebate. I've experienced no problems whatsover with a 512mb micro SD card in a 60Cx. Got ours from CDW.
  16. We're relative newbies, gecocaching since around October of '05. After this weekend we have 20 caches and 3 Travel Bugs found. This weekend also marks another milestone for us. We placed our first cache! Collecting the supplies to make the container, and purchasing treasure to put into it were as fun as a good hunt! We transplanted our first found Travel Bug into the cache. It's fair to say that we're pretty well hooked. I ordered today the tags for our first Travel Bug, and we're already talking about planting another cache.
  17. In EasyGPS I rightclick the waypoint and select "Edit". I enter the cache name into the "Waypoint" box and the hint into the "Comment" box. In my 60Cx the name shows up normally, and the hint is in the notes field. Hope I don't insult by oversimplifying...just didn't want to assume that everybody is at the same knowledge level on EasyGPS.
  18. Correction on this post...momentary brain lapse. I have a 512mb card, not a 1G. Sorry 'bout that. I picked this card up from CDW...they also had the 1G cards, but not in stock. Everybody I checked with also had the 1G cards on backorder. I wanted to play with my GPS immediately, so I went with the 512mb. For me, I'm glad that I didn't spend the extra $ on the 1G. The 512 gives me the all the memory space I need for what I'm doing. CDW isn't the most competitively priced at their list prices, but the company I work for gets a pretty good discount.
  19. I have a GPSMap 60Cx with a 512mb micro SD. I am able to fit, with all detail and POI's, from the upper peninsula of MI south to northern Alabama...and Missouri east to Maryland.
  20. I do the same with my Garmin 60Cx. I usually enter the hint in the notes section, though I do have to do quite a bit of abbreviating to make it fit.
  21. I'm a system manager for a statewide public safety communications system.
  22. Just purchased a 60Cx. I first purchased an eXplorist 600...upgrading from a Garmin GPS V. I found the eXplorist cumbersome to work with as compared to the GPS V. I did not like that I could only load maps up to 65mb in size. I could load as many maps as the SD would hold, but I could have one map active at a time. With the 60Cx I can load as large an area as the SD will hold. I use this unit for both work and play, and cover a large mult-state area. The 600 just wouldn't do the trick, so I returned it in favor of the 60Cx. I also found that I like Garmin's City Select better than Magellan's MapSend. MapSend would only route to a range of addresses on a given street, where City Select will route to a specific address. JMHO...no offense intended to anybody favoring the Magellan line. Dave
