  1. Right around this time, I usually say: Don't sweat the small stuff---and it is all small stuff.
  2. I do not use NJ Parks, my husband does. He usually works 5 1/2 days per week, he often brings work home. Last night working from 6 to 10 in the family room. His recreation is geocaching and the outdoors a couple of hours per week. I work full time. We work to meet the demands of life in NJ, the state with the highest taxes in the Country. It is offensive to me that another quality of life issue is used to jam down on the taxpayer, when we have arenas , shopping malls and golf courses for private concerns being underwritten by the taxpayer, and which served to enrich politicians. Prudential arena, Xanadu, Encap for those unfamiliar. I think if we are to have cuts they must be across the board. Every State and Local employee must be included, every town, village and city must be included. Targeted cuts do offend the sense of fairness. I note that two months before this all came about, State Court Judges received an almost 12 % raise. My last raise was 3.% , my husband has made less each of the last 3 years despite working longer and harder. I will be writing to the governor. It is small wonder why people are fleeing NJ in droves. My neighborhood is looking like everything is for sale.
  3. On July 16--I did the Sunrise thing at the Meadowlands-- I was reluctantly brought into the trip, because my Husband was running it. It is not all that bad. There is a boat livery there with canoes, solo kayaks and tandem kayaks. There is a place on the river to stop for lunch, there is almost no place to stop in the Meadowlands itself.

  6. Try Campmor.com They had a few in their retail store as of a couple of weeks ago.
  7. I was thinking more along the lines of someone going up, getting in the middle or on top and freezing and not being able to get down and then needing a real expensive, dangerous rescue. You know the kind , the ones that put rescuers at risk, so they are more than happy to send the bill.
  8. There is a doctrine of attractive nuisance, if you create it you are responsible for the resulting injuries to those attracted to it. But it usually only applies to the case where "children" get injured. But I noticed a cache, well couldn't help but notice, that is currently the rage on the forum, that looks to have potential for severe injury. So as adults you are in command of what you seek and do. So be careful out there. Machismo only belongs in movies and Brazil ,I think.
  9. My husband geocaches--I don't--He actually hikes and incorporates it into his walks and hikes, he does no park and grabs anymore. Almost a year ago I suggested it was a fad I even used the term Jumped the Shark, for which I got a lot of blast mail. My husband called me to tell me to look at the thread. He said that most of the old time players here in NE are gone and the activity level has really dropped off--# of logs and finds. He says that some of the caches he has hit recently are no longer maintained by active cachers. He said he hit a great one last week, but the owner disappeared after placing the cache in 2001. So it probably has hit its peak, but you will always have a few diehards to keep it going.
  10. Ahem, breaking news, this just in from the wire services apparenlty someone hasn't heard---- LIFE AIN'T FAIR, so stop complaining about it and get on with it.
  11. richly deserving of criticism for their inability to clearly see the total unimportance of grousing about trinkets in a box in the woods and their need to get a grip and get their activity back into a reasonable perspective of importance. Have all the fun you want, enjoy the hikes, the ootdoors , the challenge, but to argue over 10 bucks worth of stuff in a box in the woods. C'mon-- Mommy, Billy won't share!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would Mommy, but she's taking all the swag.
  12. I love visiting the geocaching forums, I get refreshed knowing that there are people in the world whose only concern is about trinkets left in a box in the woods. Life is grand. Talk about unique perspective. And the debate rages on for days.
  13. Get your local blood center to come and have a blood drive. Yup right there and then.
  14. http://www.midnightsociety.com/web/Mystery/Mason/mason.html 2 guys in Pa are trying to GPS Mason Dixon stones, they need help. Go to http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/20...masondixon.html C'mon cachers make yourselves useful.
  15. Falsely logging reflects on your character--Which also means when you do not find, you should accurately log in that result, you should not just ignore the entire search like it never even happened.
  16. I give it two years and you will all be trying to sell surplus surplus ammo cans on E Bay
  17. Or people will come to forums like this one and read the stuff that is put out about solar power and droids and think that they walked into a Star Wars convention and beat a hasty retreat, never to return again. My goodness, get a grip. Or better yet go for a walk in the woods, but leave your toy at home. Swiping cards, solar powered, droids, One thing is for sure, when people start talking about the future of some activity, it is usually a sign that the best days of the activity are already behind. Or, as I like to say, IT HAS JUMPED THE SHARK.
  18. Is it a fad ? H has hidden a few caches, adopted an abandoned, has a little fun with it, goes hiking with son. His personally hidden caches have received good review from the very few who have gone after them, but I mean there are very few lookers anymore. So few that he was planning on archiving to eliminate maint responsibility. I explain to H that as in all activity there is a huge swell in interest , which is short lived. So I tell him to wear his Nehru Jacket, boot up his CB radio, carry his hula hoop, his raquetball raquet, put his disco music on the 8 track, bring his pet rock to leave in cache before he goes out the next time. Unless there is a freshening of approach periodically it will become just another footnote in pop culture. So he has funfor a little while. Caches that are more than grab and go, that have an element of fun to them, revamped virtuals and locationless, will all help. Scheduled retirements and replacements to keep things fresh and lively.
  19. Scene, in a Diner in NYC, 4 seat booth: Geocaching comes to TV, on Seinfeld the show about nothing. Jerry: George, do you think it allowable to log a find,if you haven't actually found the cache. George: Well, how close did you actually come Jerry, did you see it, were you across the river from it, was it iced in, was it being guarded by a wolf or a bear or a snake. Was it buried. If it was buried I'd say log it. Kramer: OH,no George, no exceptions, if you don't sign the log , you don't sign the log and that means it goes down as a DNF. Even though most people who DNF, never ever post a DNF, they just treat it like they were never there to begin with. Elaine: Kramer,Mr. Peterman says in the catalog, once when he was wearing his safari vest, complete with compass hook and gps lanyard that he DNF a cache in the Serengeti because it was guarded by hyenas, but he saw it and logged it anyway. So I think it is ok. Don't worry about the hyenas. Contoversial Topic???? Get real folks.
  20. Backpacking Magazine is giving away 100 GPS/combo cell phones to people who might be interested in downloading trail tracks to their new website. They expect to have a library of thousands of GPs TRAILS--WWW.BACKPACKING.COM
  21. Stick to opining about something you know something about. Or at least try and get within 3 meters of the facts. Your response and comments again evidence an unfamiliarity with the subject matter. A thread trying to discuss an issue : Should cachers be warned about the presence of homeless persons ? turns into a tribunal on their personal attributes and how did they become homeless. Which turns into a diatribe regarding "their choices and their personal failings" The answer to the intial question is --yes , if a homeless camp is nearby an indication should be made. As to the reasons for homelessness, most often there is an unchosen life altering event. Divorce, job loss, mental illness. Check it out before you posit your sanctimonious posturings.
  22. Did that 1/2 of them choose to have a "mental problem" or was it some sort of physiological/ biochemical brain chemistry distortion, (which incidentally is the proven cause of "mental problems". As in , oh, I think today at age 18, just when life is getting full, I will choose to become manic depressive Bi Polar so that I can make my life just a tad more difficult than it should be. Or perhaps a dose of schizophrenia is what I should choose, so as to increase the potential for a disconnected life on the streets. And lastly do you choose to evidence your stupidity in such a transparent manner often or do you do it only 1/2 of the time. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is also part of the diagnostic reference text as in compulsion to engage in activities to the exclusion of other activities, as in the case of cachers who get overly engrossed. Sheesh.
