  1. I'm surprised somebody hasn't "photoshopped" the raised eyebrow yet! (Has "Photoshop" become a verb yet??)
  2. So I take a 7.5 minute topo map and a lat/log ruler and try to figure out the coordinates for a place. I calculate: N 47º 31' 58" W 121º 49' 38" (Messed up and got a map with lat/lon instead of UTM ) My trusty little yellow GPSr shows: N 47º 31' 42.5" W 121º 49' 31.8" So how did I do? Is that much error considered really good, ok. or go back to map school? just wondering if I have it figured out or not. Si
  3. One time we were out looking for a GC in a small park, and I was digging in the bark under the slide (The driest spot around) and came up empty. A lady was watching for awhile and finally asked me if I was looking for the letterbox. It was hidden under the slide, and she happend to have taken it to her car when we got there. The Cache was hidden elsewhere about 12' away, but I would have accidentally found the LB first and wondered what was going on! I can see it now "took stamp, left McToy" D'oh! We learned about LB and she learned about GC. That was a little too close tho, I think. The park wasn't exciting enough for both!
  4. I just follow Homer Simpson's advice: Leaves of 3 let it be, leaves of 4, eat some more"
  5. Here is Cocoa getting close to a cache. Shes a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Sometimes we call her "Gaseous Clay" because she, well.... you know. Si
  6. <off topic> hmmm, never seen two contractions in one word before! </off topic> I thought some grass was "made" to be trampled and cut, simulates cows or other animals eating it. Seems like I read that on the internet somewhere If grass likes to be walked on, is there an impact? Something to ponder.
  7. When I first got MapSource, I noticed if I typed in coordinates by hand, they would be way off. Once I started linking them (with a cable), they are pretty acurate. Once in a while, if I mark a beach house, it will show up out in the "water" but streets and other landmarks are right on. Lake and ocean shorelines seem a little flakey, but rivers are good. Si
  8. Dang clue is no help.... one points east, the other points north!
  9. I'm telling you, if this thing's a squirrel, he's never going to be able to get undressed in the gym with the other squirrels. He's not only a third the size he ought to be, he's got a mouse tail. I think I ruled out Woodchuck... they have 4 toes in the front, and 5 in the back. More importantly, they are born Apr or May, so he should have his eyes open and be "moved out" by now. I hate to bring this up, but if he IS a squirrel or something, is his name still Bob ? Si
  10. So now wil there be a big argument on who gets coin #1 ? D'oh! I'll be getting some, will keep an eye out for a thread on how to order. Even tho I have been lurking on this post, the coin does look amazing... great job everybody! Si
  11. I seem to be having a slightly different problem, I'm not bored, but more frustrated. I can't seem to find anything lately, am now 1 for 6. How do you keep interested when people post "jumped out and grabbed it" or "easy find" when I'm poking into bugs nests and sticking my hands in places that they shouldn't be just to come up empty? Anybody know of any 0.25 star caches around to get back in the swing? I do think I'll stick to more quality hikes out in nicer areas, and not just go for the numbers. (I know, 40 finds makes me a mear infant compared to others.) To me, what got me interested in GC in the first place was finding trails and camp grounds that I never knew about. Finding something stuck to a light post at the mall seems kinda silly (but is STILL bugs me not to find it ) Si
  12. Here's a silly question: Bob Vole seems to be growing, what is he eating? Can we use clues from his diet to figure out what he is, or is not? Do Squirrels and Voles eat the same thing? Hmmmm Just a thought.
  13. Yikes! don't tell the wife about this! I can see it now "honey, please wear this new bracelet I got you..."
  14. Marshmellow guns?????? Can some one pleeeeeease give me more info on these Danegar Yea, Enquiring minds wanna know!
  15. Hmmm Am I the only one that noticed this on the Vole website: Known predators • owls • birds of prey • snakes • foxes • weasels What's that last predator again??
  16. I once found a cache and realized I didn't have any "toy" with me , so I left a full Subway stamp card. I know the "no food" rule, but do people like free Subway/Fatburger/Taco Del Mar cards?
  17. I have taken mine to Hungary, Check Republic, Norway, Finland, Sweden and even Estonia with no problems. Don't ask, don't tell. That was all before 9/11 though, so things might be different. Take it as carry-on, if you check it, you may never see it again.
  18. I guess I'm a lurker... had 2 posts under my belt and didn't even remember. I think for some it's intimidation, it's hard to be as witty as some of the people on here. I don't notice the whining so much, guess I automatically skip over it or something. Also, I would rather have people think I'm a fool, than open my mouth and remove all doubt!
  19. What about help from our 4-legged friends? There are some tags made for dogs that could work. Still looking for a good one, but might be a way to go.
  20. How about this for a numbering idea? Break out the different types by different names, like: VCxxxx = Virtual cache MCxxxx = Multi cache LCxxxx = Locationless cache etc. That way if you d/l a bunch to your GPS, you won't spend lots of time looking for a container at a Virtual cache. ************************* Put me down for May 19 *************************
