  1. I used to work in telecommunications and got to play with a survey Trimble (sorry don't remember the model). We would use it to map out network elements (thing like manhole locations, splice points, pole locations, etc.) for use with our internal GIS. To the best of my knowledge, the unit only had one receiver, but was able to track many more satellites than a handheld unit (up to 45). It would frequently lock up on 15-20 sats. But it did take quite a while (1-2 hours). I was told the accuracy was within 5mm.
  2. Good question, in my case it may have encouraged me to cache more. Personally I probably would have gone on a geofrenzy. I don't think I would have been a better cacher for it. My point was that making someone wait won't make them any better. I researched a lot before my first hide, I wanted something unique for the area so I handmade the cache from hardware store parts. Thats just the way I am, 100 caches would not have improved me.
  3. Isn't that a little extreme...not letting people do a hide unless they have 100 caches? I might change my mind later, but I am a newbie with under 30 finds, I hid my first cache and I think the results have been pretty good. Brickell By Broadway I don't think it matters if you have 100 or 1000 caches, some people just will never get it. Cheers! Yogi
  4. Hello all, I am a newbie with only 20 caches to credit (I don't have a lot of spare time). I purchased the GC because I had read about caching on the internet (I don't know any other cachers yet) and I wanted to give it a shot and not spend a lot of money because I wasn't even sure if I would like caching. So far I like my GC very much and at its price point I think its a decent machine. Having done a couple of caches no the only drawbacks I now notice is the lack of a separate internal compass. It is a tad slow on updating position, but as mentioned you can work around this. I love having all my caches on the unit, as when the urge hits I can just pull up the nearest cache and go. The other drawback is writing even a small log with it is a pain, so I wait until I get home. Also the battery life indicator is lame, with me I have even had the unit die while displaying full battery charge; so now I keep six extra batteries in the truck at all times.
