  1. Interesting....but is your number correct? My profile says traditional: 350. I don't know for sure what TPTB consider traditional. By my count, we have 417 regular caches including multis (or 361 not including multis and 56 multi-caches). Those, plus 99 virtuals, 1 locationless, and 9 events, add up to the correct overall number of 526. Alchemist2000
  2. You might try posting at texasgeocaching.com . I am sure you will get a response from someone in that area. We live too far away or I would offer to do it for you. Alchemist2000 update: I posted a link to this post on texasgeocaching.com Hopefully someone in the Hill Country will be able to help out. 3. Good luck on your hunt. Sounds like your are definitely poised to find a new addiction that the rest of us have already found!! If you want to find out more about geocaching and geocachers in the area, check out www.texasgeocaching.com Alchemist2000
  4. We just did a 1200 mile geocaching loop through the Panhandle of Texas and part of west Texas May 15 - May 19. We specifically went to do the caches in Palo Duro Canyon State Park (GC17D and GCECAB) and Caprock Canyons State Park (GC437B). Palo Duro Canyon is about 300 miles from our home near Dallas. 37 finds/3 no finds/1 new hidden cache/a fantastic trip with wonderful scenery...Priceless! Alchemist2000
  5. Looked at my forum profile for the first time today and noticed that my gender was listed as male. Gee...my husband is going to be disappointed to hear about that! It appears that if you choose "not telling" under gender in the profile setup, it turns into "male". Alchemist2000 Come to think of it...maybe it is just an April Fool's joke.
  6. Yes, they do look good. However, the order of the topics, at least in the general area, seem backwards (kind of). There are lots of old topics near the top. Go down to the last page and they are recent 2003 topics. However, new posts do seem to be appearing correctly at the top. Is there a preference I need to set to put these in order starting with most recent? Alchemist2000
  7. You are right. As far as I know, there are currently no caches in that part of Lake Ray Roberts State Park. There used to be two, but one was permanently archived and the other is temporarily archived. However, there are two active caches in the other part of the park on the north side of the lake. Check out my new Guide to Geocaches in Texas State Parks. There are links to those two caches there. I highly recommend Abby's Point. Good luck. Have fun. Maybe it will be an opportunity to place a cache in the Isle du Bois portion of the park!! Alchemist2000
  8. Thanks, Dougsbrat. Thanks for the link to GeoSnapper!! I had never heard of it before now. I also noticed the link to mediamapper. Looks like it is more designed (or at least priced!) for professional applications. However, in just a few minutes of looking at some html examples, it appears to be very impressive. (pause as I wipe the drool off the monitor...oh, it looks nice!) Does anyone have personal experience with mediamapper? I was wondering what kind of learning curve there was to being able to use it well. I guess I will post on the GeoSnapper forum as well. Thanks again. This looks very interesting!! 9. My husband saw the Feb 26 news release for the new Ricoh RDC i700G camera on digital photography review. It will have the ability to store the coords for the location of the camera whenever a picture is taken. Looks rather pricey, but I guess I need to start saving my pennies for his Christmas gift....that is, if it is ever released for sale in this country. Anyone know anything more about this? I wonder how accurate the gps will be. Still seems pretty cool!! Alchemist2000
  10. We recently found a micro (magnetic hide-a-key) fastened to the bottom of a newspaper vending machine. Alchemist2000
  11. The list of cache approvers is on this page. Alchemist2000
  12. That is great. Our sincere congratulations!! Will the wedding be an event cache?! Alchemist2000
  13. I did not know until stumbling across this other thread that the new beta version of Expertgps supports export of Mapsource files. In case anyone else has problems with this...I created a Mapsource file with the new beta version of Expertgps. However, when I tried to open it with version 4.07 of Mapsource I got an error about the file having been created by a different version of Mapsource. I upgraded to the current version of Mapsource (4.11) and all seems to be well. Thank you Dan and the rest of the Topografix elves...you have simplified my life greatly!! 14. You are my hero!! Alchemist2000
  15. Sorry for your bad experience. I am not a native Texan, but in my 20+ years here, I have usually found people to be very friendly and reasonable. I am glad you found the cache (and the Texas geocoin!!) and I hope the rest of your stay here goes better. Alchemist2000 [This message was edited by alchemist2000 on February 12, 2003 at 02:08 PM.]
  16. There have been so many posts here about lost travel bugs, that I wanted to share some good news for a change. We had a travel bug that had been in the hands of a cacher for five months. Much to my delight, it was placed in a cache over the weekend. That alone made me almost giddy with delight, since we had essentially given up on seeing this one again. But it gets better....we also got an e-mail forwarded to us in the last week or so about another of our bugs that has been out of circulation for four months. They apologized and explained that life had gotten in the way (engagement, new job, graduate school, etc.), but promised to place the bug when the weather improved. So for those of you that may have given up hope....patience, patience, there may yet be a happy ending!!! Alchemist2000
  17. We were caching north of the Dallas/Fort Worth area on Lewisville Lake and heard the sonic boom as the shuttle reentered the atmosphere. We did not know what it was until we got home late this afternoon. We are amazed that we heard it that far away. Alchemist2000
  18. quote:Originally posted by evergreenhiker!:Stuffs all over the place in the Columbia River Gorge. It's especially important this time of the year to be alert as the leaves are off. I did a cache on the Oregon side at Coburg Rock. Here's a pic...practically all the brush you see is Poison Oak without leaves and some of it was taller than me...I'm 5'8" or so. http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/log/958347_200.jpg I've gotten very good at spotting poison ivy when it is in leaf, but I know from recent break outs after geocaching that I must be terrible at spotting it in the winter. I appreciate the pic, but I can't tell enough to distinguish it from every other leafless bush this time of year. Any pointers? Alchemist2000
  19. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z:Only this: http://www.geocaching.com/images/cache_types/4.gif Jamie Although I absolutely agree that many virtuals are VERY lame (as are many regular caches, for that matter), some virtuals are very interesting. This virtual is among our most enjoyable cache experiences. Is something like this still a turn off to those of you that don't hunt virtuals? Alchemist2000
  20. quote:update: Hmmm...before someone points that I can not do subtraction, there is now actually a difference of 6 rather than 4. The stats page apparently missed 2 recently logged caches. I will track them down and see if they will update. Even with all of my fumbling around, it took only about two minutes to get it fixed....all of which was me finding the right cache and right page. The stats page did the update instantly. As you can probably tell, I think this is a really wonderful page. Since I live in a metropolitan area included on the stats page (Dallas/Fort Worth), I love being able to go to this page and see what other people have been doing in the area on any given day. It includes not only the finds, but also the not founds. Those are often more interesting! Alchemist2000
  21. My understanding of the way the stats page works, which may be wrong, is that it looks at the Recently logged visits page available from the main geocaching.com. When it sees a log, it goes to the appropriate cache page. It looks at all of the logs on that cache page and updates its database as necessary. The page on geocaching.com only updates every 15 minutes. At busy times, like Sunday evenings, it sometimes doesn't list every log made to geocachi ng.com, so the stats page misses it. However, the stats page will eventually pick up the old log the next time someone makes a log to that cache. You can manually have the stats page review a cache page and therefore get any logs it is missing, by clicking on the Missing Log link on the stats page and filling in the information. The only problem I have noticed is that it will not pick up logs on archived pages, even using the missing logs page. That is the reason, for example, that my count on the stats page is 4 below the count on geocaching.com. I know Dan would update it for me, since he has always been very helpful in the past. However, I hated to bug him when he was still trying to recover from the downtime, etc. Alchemist2000 update: Hmmm...before someone points that I can not do subtraction, there is now actually a difference of 6 rather than 4. 22. That is fantastic!! Congratulations!! I am really intriqued with the official sticker/permits. Let us know how everything works out. Alchemist2000
  23. I sent my e-mail early this morning. Hope everything goes well at the hearing. Let us know what happens. Alchemist2000
  24. Try www.txgeocoins.com for Texas geocoins. Neuman, who is a cacher in your area, worked out the details and sells them. Alchemist2000 oops...n&b beat me to the draw
  25. The sheer excitement of the site being back caused my brain to disconnet. [This message was edited by alchemist2000 on January 13, 2003 at 05:49 PM.]
