  1. I have had great success with gpsdiscount.com. Alchemist2000

  3. If you are looking for screen protection, try these screen protectors from Strong Engineering Saw these listed about a year ago here in the forums. They are great. Bought a dozen for my V. After nearly a year (and LOTS of caches) I have only gone through two of the protectors. Alchemist2000
  4. Woohaa.....my first Markwell! This is a wonderful post by BruceS from over a year ago. Actually, I would really like to see other people's descriptions of their preparations for geoquests, as well. Good question, Snooges!! Alchemist2000
  5. Thanks, Dan. I have said it before and am glad to say it again, I got a lot of enjoyment from you site. Alchemist2000

While you are viewing the map/navigation page, press 'menu', then select 'recaculate'. A drop-down box will appear. Select 'off-road' and there is your compass arrow. Thanks...that is much better than the alternatives I had been using. Alchemist2000
  7. quote:Originally posted by Brainerd: 1. Name the waypoint for your house 'home'. When you want to navigate home just press find twice. Well, that is cool!! Learn something new everyday! BTW...I have had my V for a year and a half and absolutely LOVE it. I can not possibly imagine life without it. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to switch from on road to off road mode? If I am pointing to a cache in the middle of park that is not near a road or parking area, it would be nice to switch to off road mode as we are nearing the park. Yes, of course I can redo the search and ask for off road mode if we are already parked and ready to head out on the trail. I was hoping for some easy method which I can do while still manuevering through traffic. Alchemist2000
  8. quote:Originally posted by Cruzin!:Dang, I'm impulsive. Once I get something into my head I have a one-track mind - some would say that I become obsessive. I bought a '98 Jeep Wrangler tonight. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. I'm so excited! -- That's great!! We have never regretted getting our Wrangler for geocaching adventures and it is so much FUN!! Congratulations!! Alchemist2000
  9. I understand your frustration, but don't be too discouraged. Caches and the caching experience vary a lot. You will soon learn the particular people in your area whose caches you like to seek. Alternatively, you can concentrate on particular areas/parks that are more to your liking. I know we particularly like caching in Texas State parks. Since I was spending so much time looking for caches in those parks, I finally put it together in one site, Guide to Geocaches in Texas State Parks . I put it together for our use, but then spruced it up a little for general use. Please feel free to use the site if it helps. Some of those caches are lame, too, but more often than not they are enjoyable because of the location. Some of them are spectacular. Alchemist2000
  10. Hey Hawk-eye, I don't know you and will probably never have an opportunity to hunt your caches, but your posts in the forums were an important part of my learning about geocaching when I first started long ago. I hate to see this kind of thing happen, but certainly understand your frustration. I greatly respect the thankless job of the approvers and wouldn't wish that job on anyone. Having said that, HOW some of them go about what they do is extremely heavy-handed and in many cases could be handled in a much better way. There may be a perfectly good explanation to what happened here, but it seems silly that a cache that has been in the field so long would unilaterally be archived without some communication with the cache owner first. This type of heavy-handed, unilateral action without communication is hurting geocaching, yet I don't get the sense that TPTB see it as a problem. Anybody see any way to get this message through more clearly to TPTB?? Again, Hawk-eye, hope you keep the door open for a possible change of mind. Even if you don't, thanks for contributing to my enjoyment of geocaching in ways you were never aware. Alchemist2000 [This message was edited by alchemist2000 on August 13, 2003 at 04:20 AM.]
  11. I know Dan had the statement on his site forever concerning wanting someone to take it over, but do we really know it is gone forever? I noticed that he has not signed onto geocaching.com since last Thursday. Maybe he is on vacation and the site took the opportunity to crash. I hope. I hope. Alchemist2000
  12. Actually I think I could get used to the frog (maybe), but the kid is something else. Everytime I look at him I think he has a pacifier in his mouth. The other shirt is fine, but would much prefer grey. Alchemist2000
  13. If I understand your post correctly, it is not a datum issue but a format issue. The coordinates are both correct but in different formats. N 43 04.934 is in degrees minutes and decimal minutes (dd mm.mmm). 43.08223 is in degrees and decimal degrees (dd.ddddd) There are 60 minutes in a degree. Therefore, if you multiply 0.08223 times 60, you can convert that to 4.93338 minutes. Either the program to which you download (Easygps?) or your gps is probably set to the different format and is doing the math to convert the posted cache page coordinates to the coordinates in the other format. Change that to dd mm.mmm and everything should be listed the same. Alchemist2000

  15. Hey, Ventureforth, haven't heard from you for awhile! No, don't archive them. Having been to most of your caches, we know that yours are very good. The more recent logs still reflect that, too. You are right, it is fun to find an old cache. Unfortunately, the density of cachers in your area is pretty low. With all of the new caches appearing out to the northeast of the metroplex (there are now scads of them around Lake Lavon) that may change. Actually, maybe more caches, not less, is the answer. That would bring more cachers into the sport in your area and also entice more of the DFW cachers out your way. Hang in there. Great to hear from you again!! Alchemist2000

Actually this is not correct any more, There are 2 ways to make your own maps that are downloadable to Garming GPS's now. http://www.gpstm.com/eng/dekode_eng.htm http://www.gpsinformation.net/gpsmapper/gpsmapper.htm http://www.keenpeople.com/geocaching/custom.shtml Very cool. Thanks for the info. I stand corrected!! Alchemist2000
  17. quote:Originally posted by Cypress Cacher:So if I got Topo, could I load both Topo AND City Select into memory at the same time. I know one will take priority, but I think I can just disable City Select in the Map Source menu before I started walking around. Would that work? That way, I can use City Select th auto-navigate to the cache, then use Topo when off-road. Yes, that is correct. I do that with our GPS V (and I am also a flatlander!). I am usually fairly selective about which topos I load. They are small and don't take up much memory when they are only supplemental to the City Select maps. They are useful for knowing the position of creeks or streams. We have also enjoyed having them on hikes where there is more elevation change, such as in many of the state parks. However, the detail of the topos is not nearly as good as even the topos from expertgps. However, if you want topos in the gps, the Mapsource Topo is your only choice. Alchemist2000

  20. I normally use Netscape 7.0. The font is definitely much smaller than you have normally used on geocaching.com pages in the past....and seems to be the case on all of the new pages you have just implemented. Brought everything up in IE and the font seemed more normal size. Alchemist2000
  21. Any way to configure what it does when I hit nearest caches from My Cache Page? Right now it gives me X's in the brackets for founds, but our hiddens are not marked in any way (at least that I see....they look like ones we have not found). Maybe it is just my old eyes or something about my browser, but the font is so small it is difficult for me to read. My husband made the same comment (on a different computer). Does seem much faster. I also like that the search goes out to 150 miles. I will have to play with the different options and try to get the hang of those. Alchemist2000
  22. quote:Originally posted by Sissy-n-CR:Mine was accurate. I wonder is it counts what those caches are _now._ It could have been a Traditional when you found it, but the owner realizing an offset is actually a Multi, could have changed it. Yea...that occurred to me after I made the post. I keep a spreadsheet with our caches and just took the numbers from that. I'll have to go back and take a look at them, but I suspect you are right. That will be on my "in the middle of the night and I have insomnia but geocaching.com is fast" to do list. Alchemist2000
  23. What is the longest distance from your home where you have been the first to find a cache? For us....1007 miles. Alchemist2000
  24. 18 of our 526 finds are FTF. We don't get much opportunity to be first if they are here close in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, because there are lots of people who are fanatical about being first and we cache almost exclusively on the weekends. However, we did have two multi-FTF days, one with 3 and one with 4. We enjoy being first and it is often different than normal caching....you don't have the benefit of the comments from the logs and sometimes the coords can be off considerably. Alchemist2000
