  1. What is the maximun MicroSD card I can put in the Oregon 450T. I call tech support and get a different answer every time. I currently have 4G in there and with all the maps and routes and other goodies... I'm almost out of RAM. Please reply if you know the answer. Peace - Ritual
  2. I have tried finding caches with no luck. If there is sort of group sort of something, it would be greatly appreciated. I've gone after two caches with no luck. I would be happy following someone who knows what they are doing. I have no experiencing with orienteering or any I idea how how to use this unit. I have great enthusiasm regarding how to use the unit (Garmin Oregon 450T). I can be reached at: http://water_ritual@yahoo.com Please contact me if you would like to help. I'm waiting for my Premium Membership to go (a couple of days), which may help. Thanks - WaterRitual
  3. Greetings Hopefully, you will see many more messages from me. I have an eye on the Garmin Oregon 550T. This is not a cheap unit, but seems extremely user-friendly. If anyone has as sggestion for a less expensive model (Garmin Oregon + map + memory ~=800$ US). I'm glad to post here and hopefully will make some hikes in the future (I'm just outside the capital of New York - Albsny) Thanks for your concern - Bob
  4. How much memory can a Garmin 550t take? I've heard 2G and 4G. I would like to know before I buy the unie/memory. I also need a complete novice (me) to go on some explorations. - Bob
  5. Hello All! Happy holidays! Also, is there a way NOT to load the entire DVD into the Garmin Oregon 550T when I do the upload? I looked around and couldn't find a way to load (for example) only New York State. If anyone knows where to go to get this information, I would be deeply grateful. Happy GeoCaching - Ritual
  6. What is the max RAM help by a Garmin Oregon, 550T? Any response wound be greatly appreciated. - WR
  7. I was told 8G was max for that unit. I don't think what to think.
  8. At first, I spent WAY too much for a Garmin 550T. I'm just wondering.... what is the max MicroSD car that can put in this device? I've seen then for cheap (leass thyan 1/2 of what I paid for an official Garmin 1G chip. What is the max the 550T will take, with screwing up. - WR
  9. Anyone in the Capital Region of upstate New York (Albany, Schenectady, Troy area) wandering around? I need some advice to forward my quest. Feel free to PM. - WR
  10. I'm curious, is the clip different between the 450 and the 550? Based on the owners manual, they appear to be the same. On the 450 the clip stays in the unit, you slide the the clip out of the locked position and flip it up, insert the card into the tray, lower the clip and slide it back into the locked position. No, they are not the same. The clip on my 450T would come right out of the unit (I had to pay careful which way it went back it) The manual is very brief on lots of issues (I would expect more, paying that much for the GPS). Also, the manual does indeed differ. I believe it covers four different models. - WR I'm starting to think there was genuinely think there was something wrong with the unit. The clip would fall out at the drop of a hat, even after I unlocked, mounted the chip (which didn't really "plug in" but would sit in it's place until I tried to lock it in place" On both the 450T and the 550T there was no printing or indication on that little metal clip which way it should be mounted(I mentioned earlier about them coming out. With delicate parts such as these, I've learned not to try to "force" anything.

  13. I had previously bought broth the Garmin 440T and teaded for the 500T. There are many reasons I bought these were returned, but now I'm regretting it except the 550T. Boththunits were amazing and the only reason I tried to change the 450T for the 550T is that the 550T has a camera. Unfortunately, I could not get the 550T's memory card, after hours of even. Given above what I'm guess using seeking, is there any GPSr that anyone? I'm so mad at that little chip-malfunction I could die, because it had evererything I would like. Altitude. waypoints. anything I wanted, there it was. Unfortunately . I don't know of any other devices that do these things. I really want to how many photos can be hek on say... (1G, 2G,or4G) card. Dooes anyone have this with upgraded memory. Does anyone have problems with that micro memory card with with the 450T? I got the 550T and spent hours truing to hold in in then. I'm just a step away from from what I want (550T) I can't see in the winter with bare hands changing the card. Plus.... at Radio Shack today, the max card they had was 16 Gig at around. I would love to pop in a 32 Gig card(the max supposedly) Anyhow - love to all - WR
  14. Once I get the maximum card, I never inrend it again. I just can BELIEVE such a small intregel piece of thin metal is what the whole unit rely on. The 450T seemed to pop right in there, whereas this 550T ..... I spent hours trying to "think I got it to "nope don't got it. - WR
  15. Well, I will often find myself removing my SD card while out in the field, to move data around, but then again, I only have an Oregon 400t, so I must manage my GPX files in smaller chunks. Heck, there are almost twice as many active caches in Cook County IL than what my Oregon will hold as caches. For this reason, I often have to move GPX files around when the caching group changes plans while out on the road. I keep my old Windows Mobile PDA around because it can read the micro SDHC card in an adapter allowing me to move the files easily while away from my computer. Yet another I would like a larger card. I want to store caches as well a** the the pictures that go with them - WR
  16. Same question: Why do you need to change a chip outside. Don't you do this before you go out caching or hiking? Again, we reach the crux of the biscuit. I would like a larger card so I never have to do the card change again The one map I bought pretty much fills the 1 Gig card I originally bought. - WR
  17. That's just it - I wanted to cram as big a card as possible so I wouldn't have to switch to other maps/cards I got my hands on. The single 24K Map I bought pretty much fills the card. My card was 1 Gig and I was hoping for something (albeit more expefore) - WR
  18. Yes, I really hate to see the 500T go. The thing had EVERYthing I wanted. However, the manual mentioned little, regarding the placement chip. Sure, there is the possibility that I did something wrong, but it's one one of those things where if you put too much force on the thin clip, that's the end. Can anyone reccomend an unit similar? Because I loved that think. As it I's stuck with a DVD and 1G chip for which I would like to see functioning. Man... I had those two units (450t & 550T) and I was in heaven. I don't want to sink half a grand into another for which I had no help. Which brings me to another point... The 450T I purchased at a local store and it was easy to go in and ask questions. The 550T I had to send away to NYC and I could ask whiway was up on the clip. To answer one person's question, I live in a climate that get darn cold up in the mountains and it can get pretty numbing in places. - WR
  19. Today I returned my Garmin 550T. The problem was that little clip that holds the memory chip in place. I swear I spent hours trying to get it to fit, but no go. Putting in that little metal in nice 80 degree weather, but I can' imagine doing it in sub-zero temperatures on a mountain. I'm really disappointed.... I really wanted this unit. I had returned the 450T because I wanted the camera, plus there were little things I've mentioned before (like the manual not mating the unit). So.... now I have to do some research before I buy my next. I might wait out the winter. Thanks everyone for answering everyone of my messages and generally being friendly. I would certainly behave in the same way with other Geocachers. - WR
  20. I recently made l a long distance purchase. I used to the Oregon 500T, but I wanted the camera so I returned it to a local dealer where I oriainalized my 55T and had no problems. I traded in for the Oreopn 550Y. If anyone else can suggest what to do do about the memory-sicking though problem - WR
  21. Hi. I live in niskayuna, NY, USA. If anyone cen can me on on "hunt", i would really appreciated. I'm very new at this, would like to get involved, but need some help. Please help me - I have a car. - WR
  22. Sorry about forgetting to include the signature with Model #. What's weird is that the forum included it in my first message, but nit in any replies. I'm trying to fix this, - WR
  23. I need some help here. It turns out that th2 2Gig car isn't cutting it. Are there there risks in putting 32Gig card in there? That's the largest I've seen so far, with a forum message saying it was okay. If not, what's the largest I can safely put in? - WR
  24. quote name='kunarion' date='Sep 2 2010, 06:24 PM' post='4456921'] Garmin recommends 8GB max, but blousing around, I found mentions of people using 32GB Micro SD cards just fine. The official Garmin maps are limited to 4GB of that. You save all caches and waypoints to the internal memory (not to the SD card), except that you can use extra SD card space for storage (like a flash drive). You can also access pictures from the card, such as satellite photos you've saved to it. Thank uou. tomorrow I plan om gett as large of s chip as possible. - WR
