  1. Yes I know what tournaments are. What I'm asking is that at a tournament you enter all the caches manually into your app or device at the start of the tournament. Most off the apps I've seen are designed to import the caches from the web with very little manual input. So I'm wondering, looking for input on other geocachers opinion on apps they use when they do tournaments. If prefer not to bring my laptop to enter the data, then tr ansfer it to my devices.
  2. Yes geocaching tournaments. I'm thinking of doing the geobash in July and I want to get prepared.
  3. I'm curious what apps people use who do tournaments. Most of the apps are designed for geocache already on the website and not fit manually adding them. Looking for apps for both android and ipad.
  4. Well if you only have one pocket query, it will have the same name and overwrite the older GPX file on your 400T.
  5. Apparently the Microsoft MSN Direct service that was bundled with my Nuvi and that I paid for the lifetime package is being discontinued and ends in 2012. If you have had your unit longer than three years, they considered you got your lifetime out of it. If less, you may get money back. So now a major part of the Nuvi is crippled after 2012.
  6. FYI, you can switch to "Off Road" which will disable the road lock.
  7. OK, thanks that worked. cool macro. I don't geocache as much as I use too, but I still like playing with the toys.
  8. I'm having a small issue. I've installed all the latest files, updated my Nuvi 206W. I can run pilotsnipe's version just fine. When I run your file, I get the same as Pilotsnipe's. No categories, no separate databases on the Nuvi. Any idea.
  9. IMHO, for geocaching you need the Topo more than the Street Nav, but I do highly recommend getting the street nav software. Before i bought a car with built-in nav, I used the GPS solely to navigate to geocaches and other areas.
  10. hey dude, I own both the garmin GPSMAP 60C as well as the Garmin GPSMAP 60CX, as well as other older units. You need to understand that the new GPSMAP 60CX and the GPSMAP 60CSX both use a new chipset that finds the satellites quicker as well as hold the signal much better in both city and forest. They also allow the use of micro-sd cards capable of holding complete maps of the US, both Topo and street, etc. The CSX also has an altimeter and electronic compass. I don't need these features, but some like them. Stay away from older units because they use the older chipsets and really suck in the deep woods. BTW color really improves screen clarity.
  11. How is the reception on these units as compared to previous units?
  12. Pretty much 50/50. I like Garmin's software better, but the magellan will get a better signal. The newer etrexes has a better chipset which I don't think are out yet.
  13. I loaded all of the US from NT onto a 2 gig chip as well as a substantial part of the topo of the northeastern seaboard.
  14. OK after a winter of alot of overtime, I went and purchased the Garmin 60cx. I have all the adapters for it as well as the mounts(car/motorcycle/bike) and I really like the software and display of the Garmin over the Magellan. Especially since the garmin does a much better job of autorouting and can handle 1000 waypoints instead of 200.
  15. No, although the Solumnar Tables which this is based one is an interesting concept. In the real world, these things can't be predicted.
  16. Does the PN-20 have a geocaching mode like the garmin or Magellan?
  17. I have used both. I currently use a Magellan Explorist 500. The 500 gets better signal and lock than the 60C that I've used before, but the 60C has much better graphics and software. When I bought the 500, I couldn't afford the newer 60CX. For geocaching, either brand will work, but the graphics and software of the Garmin is superior.
  18. gave it a try, but it errors out after trying to load a GSAK generated gpx.
  19. I too have used both GPXSonar and cachemate on a PocketPC. Perhaps because my new PPC has Mobile 5, I find GPXSonar to load very slow so I have switched to Cachemate. I also have memorymap navigator installed for better topo maps and the capability of aerial maps.
  20. Just an additional comment, being new to the Explorist world and coming from the Garmin camp, I really didn't like switching from topo to streets on the explorist. Lo and behold I've found through the yahoo Explorist site a way to have both topo and streets combined on one map. It's a little work, but worth it.
  21. I have made a ID card, more for events than for other purposes. Also if I get hurt, they can identify the body : )
  22. Maybe. I've experimented with both a GPSMAP 60C for geocaching and street navigation. Also a laptop with Delorme street Atlas and a wired receiver. Also a PDA with mapoplis and a bluetooth receiver. Obviously as fas as screen resolution and detail, the laptop was the best, but requires you to look away from the windshield. It has voice commands, but I could never hear them over the radio. The PDA was probably second for screen color and clarity, but too fragile for geocaching. I primarily used the GPSr. One limitation is the amount of memory. A large state could tax the memory of the unit. Which is why the new units are gaining popularity.
  23. I've had the basic etrex, the etrex legend, a GPSMAP 60C, and shortly a Magellan 500. The older b&w etrex line has a lot of signal reception problems. I've found quite a lot of caches with the 60c, but that was living with its signal shortcomings. If I had the money, I would have upgraded to the 60cx for the new chipset and extended memory storage. I was able to get the 500 on ebay for 165 plus S&H. If the reception is as good as they say, it should be a good unit. Check on ebay, you might end up with a better buy. I also bought my 60c online originally.
  24. The more I think about it, I think I did install Greasemonkey and Lordelph's script to do this, but I had forgotten about it. I think that when Greasemonkey updated there were problems with the script and no new updates to it.
  25. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...ac-22247d9f7866 Which is GCRA85 or Geese Landing. Above the UTM, it lists a link for Google Map, (inc Satellitte), or Google Earth. This link opens up Google Earth and goes to the cache. But it is not displayed on every site. It may have been something I did when I was more involved in the sport, but I wonder why it's not displayed on every page.
