  1. thanks again for all the kind words. I closed this cache out due to location change. its going to take a trip to NH this summer so it will be fun to see it travel
  2. i first saw it in a movie called splinterheads. geocaching happens to play a large roll in the movie as its a favorite hobby of one of the main character. half way through i paused the movie to search google to see if it was real. sure enough i found this site and did a search. 15 min later i was standing in a bush only 800 feet from my home finding my first cache.
  3. i dont really know since it was built over time and not in one strech, but now that i have built one my quess is i qould build another one in a couple days. the painting would take another few days cause ya gotta scetch it all out first.
  4. much appriciated. put this back out so we shall see how it goes. Almost done with my newest creation and i will post pics soon.
  5. Thanks for all the kind comments. As for plans that wont be all the easy. I build on the fly for just about all the wood and metal work I do. I machine test and machine again. Since I never mass produce I just kinda Wing it. i could build another one now but i'm sure i would just wing that one to lol
  6. forgot to put the story that makes the cache page
  7. thanks. The top layer consist of the bottom plate/guide rails and then the top slats. The slats have channels routed into them to slide on the rails. Then of course a channel cut out to allow the key to slide out when lined up right. As for the lock, at rist I wanted to make it so that the combo on top unlocked the box without any other lock device. The problem was in order to do that I would have had to take up a fair amount of space in the box in order to do it the way I wanted. The idea changed until I decided to use a master key that would in turn give the code to the outer locks. This also allowed me to help out cachers that were having tom much trouble. Its hard to expalin putting a picture together but giving combos to a lock is not. I have not had to give away the combos yet but if someone was getting extra frustrated or maybe had a litte kid they did not want to dissapoint I would be willing to do so.
  8. no worries about hint. its already been long found.
  9. Hello all. This is an active cache so if you happen to be in my area DO NOT READ ANY FARTHER. SPOILER ALERT!!! After getting a nice response on my last cache I decided to build a new one. It is not active right this second but that's cause i wanted to make a few improvements in the mechanism. This started as a easy job but grew into a rather complicated build. lots of rebuilding had to take place to get it right. unfortunately while building it i managed to cut two of my finger almost off on the table saw. This little mix up caused a LONG delay while i healed. About 6 months later i was good to go and so was the cache. here are some pics. any and all comments are welcome. I have another new idea already in the works but it will take awhile to design and engineer. In order to open it you must first find it, read the story and figure out the proper order to arrange the slats the make up the top of the coffin. The solution is that you must reunite the three lost souls. There are 9 total skulls that you can make with the slats but only one combination will show three complete skulls at the same time. Once you do that you can then remove the key which has two sets of combination. You decipher the numbers and figure out which lock they belong to through trial and error. After that your in. hope you enjoy.
  10. thanks for the suggestion. today i went back to the park where i have a few caches to check on them and to scout the new location i had planned back when i got this idea. I was greeted by one of my caches being gone all together, one of them was right where i left it but its not my cache. someone took mine and replaced it with a ammo can filled with stuff from other caches. then at the spot i wanted to place the new one the park put up no trespassing signs at the entrance to the trail. needless to say this did not help my confidence. i will be putting alot of thought into where i place this cache over the next week or so. i'm just gonna do the best i can and then hope. i figure as long as it at least gets found a few times and makes some people happy that will be good enough for me.
  11. will def be a premium cache. as for on my own property i like to avoid that because the point is to get out and visit places you may have not seen or is nice to visit. my street and middle class home is not one of those places lol
  12. hello all I have spent the last few months building a cache that I have no doubt has never before been seen. In my wood shop and machine shop I have designed and worked very hard to build and sculpt this cache.During the building I even cut off my middle finger on a table saw causing quite the delay. although a bit shorter not (lol) my hand is healed and this weekend I have at last finished this piece. I have one huge problem now. I am afraid to put it out. I have spent so much time on this now I don't want to put it out in fear that it will go missing. I know that's silly but I did not expect to be so worried. I have another cache that also took quite some time that was stolen on the first try but I build it again and so far it has remained in great shape and has received great reviews. This responce inspired me to build one a bigger and even better one soooo I said all the so that I can ask this. Does anyone know of an establishment such as city visitor centers, library's that allow you to place caches inside the building?? Is that even allowed?? am i just being stupid and should just put it out as planned? any special tips that could make me feel better about it?? PS: i AM NOT saying my cache is soo special everyone will want it, I'm not that full of myself. Im just saying that its not the typical 2 dollar box in the woods
  13. i found out about it while watching Splinterheads. once they started talking about it my wifer paused the movie and said "go ahead" I said "go ahead and what" she said "you know you want to look it up and see if its real and it will bother you til you do so just look" about 15 min later we were walking about 500 feet from our house and searching for our first cache.
  14. i think its just a matter of lazy people not so much the fault of the phone. i log from my phone all the time but i always erease the auto tag like saying i logged from blackberry. i think a log should be an account of the time you had with your find. if the hide stinks or is boring and un-inventive i just put a quick one liner. if its a great hide i make sure the person knows about it. i have only 4 hides and most logs are rather extensive because i put alot of time effort into making the cache. if you put no time into as cache and toss plastic box in the woods i dont think you can expect people to put time into talking about it. i find in most cases an interesting cache will generate interesting logs. not always but most of the time
  15. for me its not so much the "strang stuff" i find butinstead its the fact that i find anything in some of the places i go. for example yesterday i wentmosr then a mile out into the woods looking for a new location for my cache. i was in a VERY over grown area that was not easy to walk through (i got the cuts and scratches to prove it today) at last i came to a sopt that i loved and i thought was pleasing to to be. sure enough i see beer cans/cig butts/bags. i mean i know bums live in woods but they sure as hell dont live in this part of the woods. the only thing i can think of is these areas have not always been over grown and thats when this stuff got there
  16. I think i win this game lol. (if you want to consider it winning anyhow). last sunday i cut my middle and pointer finger almost all the way off on a table saw while building our newest cache. The bad news is it was extremely painfull and my kids were standing there when it happened. The good news it that other then being about a blades width shorted (lol) they sewed it up and they will work just fine. needless to say i beleive i can say i have the most blood sweat and tears into one cache. cache is still not down cause i have to wait for them to heal before i can use my hand well enought to build it. still very excited about finishing it. i have no doubt it is one that has never been seen. PS: for all you sick puppies out there pics are available if ya want em. Since i am just as sick as you are taking cell phone pics of my ripped up hand seemed like a good idea at the time lol
  17. I dont know where i fit. I am new. have less then 30 finds. BUT i am already in the later stages i think. I care most about the more difficult finds but i am also becoming a FTF hound. i also have taken to hiding and insist on only "out of the norm" hides to try and spice things up in our area. So far i being told on doing well at that. so i think i must be the missing link in that evolution chart lol
  18. this is just a guess but maybe it has something to do with the update today. i had a find on my new cache yesterday and also did not get notified. only happened to find it in the log when i was looking
  19. great, got it. so i need to double check that date before i hit submit. i never change it but maybe it defaults wrong sometimes.
  20. wonderful. that worked great. thanks for the help
  21. wonderful. that worked great. thanks for the help
  22. hello all. I have a cache that was stolen. in that cache there was two travel bugs i have send messages to the owners letting then know the grim news but since then i have replaced the cache and the bugs still show as in the cache. how do i remove them so people dont come expecting to find something thats not there. thanks for the help
  23. Hey all. This should be a simple question. I have noticed something with the last few logs i have placed. All three were F2F logs. All where relatively quickly after being published. Somehow when I place my log entry claiming the find it shows up BEFORE the published log. Also I had a cache that was not active. I replaced the cache and enabled it, this morning there was a F2F log that I did not get notification on AND the F2F log was BEFORE my log when I enabled it. How does this happen? Does not matter to me really just looks odd and thought maybe there was a reason for it.
