  1. Hey Dan, Glad you're staying - I'd miss the entertainment if you left! Like the others have said, we all make mistakes (one day I'll tell you about the time we snuck out of our boarding houses and got completely bladdered on the communion wine they'd left out in the Meeting House at school)and at the end of the year we'll probably look back at recent events with a smile on our faces. Besides, it'll probably come part of UK Geocaching History - along with He Who Shall Not Be Named. Keep on caching, Two Bears
  2. Nigel, Thanks for your well thought out and well measured post. I've been following the postings on both sites forums over the last day or so, and I hope that now the dust is settling we can all move on a bit. For my part, I've temporarily disabled one of my own caches. To complete the clues, one of the locations that has to be visited is Hetty Peglers Tump - and I had hidden a small film canister containing a clue letter in the tump itself. Even though I had stated clearly on the cache page that it would not be necessary to move any stones or to find the clue, I have taken the concerns of those at Mod Ant to heart, and realise that hiding something physical at this particular location is not appropraite. I went there straight after work to remove the canister. Over this weekend I will change the location to a 'virtual' one - this will encourage others to visit and explore the tump, but they won't need to root around looking for anything. It's a fascinating place, and I already include web links to othe pages with more information about the tump itself. Please be reassured that the actual cache lunchbox is nowhere near the tump itself, and right by a public footpath. I've been a member of the UK Geocaching community (albeit a passive and lurking one) for quite some time now - and whenever concerns have been expressed about cache locations, it's been my experience that the cachers involved have always listened to those concerns and tried to address them. Lets hope that we all learn something from the last couple of days - we have interests that share some common themes and I'm sure we can get along if we take time to consider each others point of view. Each to his own, as they say. Two Bears
  3. Hi Jamie, Half way through my reply then Team Minim pop upp with the same info! I suspect that they deal in export only - never seen that tea here. If you like I could give them a ring and try and find out who they ship to in the US, then you could find out which stores the importers supply to. Or if it's the Earl Grey flavour she likes, rather than a specific brand, try Mark T. Wendell, Tea Importer (508) 369-3709 P.O.Box 1312, West Concord, MA 01742 Also we used to use http://www.goodwoods.com/ when we were in Houston. (Essential for stocks of Cadburys chocolate - just couldn't get used to Hershey Bars) Good luck! Two Bears
  4. It's that thing I can't tell from my elbo. And jeremy's maths is spot on (smart ars!)

  6. If you go down to the woods today You're sure of a big suprise If you go down to the woods today You'd better go in disguise For every cacher that ever there was Will gather there for certain because This is the cache where Tim and June left a teddy If you go down to the woods today You'd better not go alone It's lovely down in the woods today But safer to stay at home The Hornet's there with his hand in a nest And Dan and Pid in bullet-proof vests Today's the day they'll probably get arrested Every cacher who's read the map Is sure of a cache today The GPS batteries are horribly flat And leading the rest astray Beneath the trees where no satellite sees They'll curse and wish they'd brought spare batteries Today's the day the cachers all lose their marbles
  7. Also Dounreay - although it is marked on some maps now. Originally none of the nuclear establishments were marked, which was a real pain when we were sent off to a site we hadn't visited before... although I've no idea how you could miss something the size of Sellafield.
  8. We had a few problems with this sort of thing when we were flying from Houston to Boston about 4 days after September 11th. We'd followed the advice of the airline and made sure that anything electronic was bagged in our hand luggage, including our Vista. We also had a pewter model of the Apollo moon landing that we'd picked up at the Johnson Space Centre. Unfortunately, this just looked like a jumble of wires on the x-ray, so they asked us to unpack our bag. This was fine by us. So they took out the Vista, a GameBoy Advance and... a book called "Missile Guidance and Pursuit" that Geoff was reading (he's got a PhD in Control Theory so this kind of thing is like reading the Beano for him). We could see the thought process... missile guidance...GPS... Had a few uncomfortable minutes as we were taken aside separately to explain. Meanwhile the GameBoy and game cartridges were dismantled. Still don't quite know why. Fortunately, our stories tallied so, after a quick check with Geoff's employer (thankfully their HQ is in Houston) that he really was what he said he was, we were allowed to continue. Suffice to say that the book stayed in the hold luggage for the rest of the holiday. Two Bears
  9. Believe it or not there are other crazy people (non-geocachers) out there looking for these things. This site has some handy info, and details the ones they've found so far, with details of whether they still exist and whether they are accessible or not. http://nmc-ramblers.org.uk/cgi-bin/trig/register.php Maybe if we get in touch with them we could share info. Might even convert a few more to the geocaching cause.

  11. Check out this thread for a really funny 'near-encounter'. Almost didn't believe it until I saw the pic in one of the logs. http://opentopic.Groundspeak.com/0/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=1750973553&f=1980966883&m=9000979883

  13. We've just had to suspend our Bear's Lair cache. We picked a great place to hide it, away from prying eyes, nice and snug and cosy. Only problem is Mrs. Blackbird agrees with us and has decided to build her nest, complete with egg, slap bang on top of it. (Thanks to Zcat for letting us know about this - bet you all got a suprise when you reached in to pull the cache out!) This set us wondering - what other strange wildlife encounters have you had while you've been out caching? (Have heard about a couple of US caches that were eaten by bears - presumably Tupperware = Picnic if you're a bear)

  15. Congratulations - looks like there's going to be quite a demand for your Centennial (is that the right word - we're not sure) Bears... The Bear Shop must love you guys! Just gotta make sure we get to a Bear cache before Dave and Nicky!

  17. We're off to Germany for ten days hiking in the Black Forest (and same number of nights eating and drinking in the Black Forest inns ). There are a pitiful number of caches there (3 at the last count, and none of them have been logged) so we plan to place a few more on our travels. Also taking the outlaws on a cruise ( EEK!), but I'm not sure how much opportunity that will give us to place caches. Probably be too busy stopping aged parentals from harrasing the ship's staff ...

  19. Actually, I think I prefer Monz's translation better... but I just couldn't resist the one (and probably only) opportunity to use an otherwise useless skill. Wonder if I could get away with the fukal thing at work?

  21. It's written in Slovak. Here's my (very rough) translation. It comes with no guarantees, and any Slovak's reading might get a bit of a giggle, but I'm exceptionally rusty and it's the best I can do. "Great! Indeed the wind was blowing really fast, but it got steadier. The problems began near the beginning - couldn't get to the waypoint after the third one. In Slovakia there are hardly any Geocaches compared to the UK - so I can see I will have to make some myself. Hudec" Maybe Hudec downloaded the cache info before you fixed the waypoint? Hope this helps, GeoBear

  23. Well, one of us works in the oil industry designing drills that steer round corners (but used to make inertial navigation systems for missiles and can remember when GPS was REALLY expensive - tens of thousands of squids). The other half of the team is an embedded software engineer making probes to measure very very very small things. We both also used to work in the nuclear industry but quit before it all turned mushroom shaped. (Turning up for work in a 'Nuclear Power No Thanks' t-shirt probably wasn't a good career move)
