  1. What do you mean??? I have a life, swimming and cycling (and im a teenager what else am I supposed to do). I think he implied that when you get a spouse all the fun will end and you will live out the rest of your miserable self loathing days in the trecherous monotony of monogomy lusting for things you'll never have while some souless soul-vacum of a spouse drains every single drop of energy from your weaking spiritless body. Of course I could be projecting my own issues, no really, marriage is great...everyone should do it. (Somebody kill me, please!) Two things: 1) Misery loves company, and 2) If you're married then live vicariously through these forums.
  2. That's really sad. How I wish I could take Patch but I have two young boys at home. They really miss our old chocolate lab who passed away a couple years ago. I miss her tremendously, too. She never snapped at anyone even in her painful arthritic twilight. Patch looks like such a fun, intelligent, and energetic dog. He'd be perfect for the young single dude with a big backyard, who goes on lots of outdoor trips. I wish you all the luck in the world finding a suitable home for Patch. I hope you can find a more gentle replacement (pure lab?).
  3. I would consider doing something crazy like that if there was snow here. I don't have any plans. Will probably stare at the TV or see who is in geocaching chat. I have snow at my place. *wink* *wink* Being the happily married guy that I am, I'll have to live vicariously through Bender and DeskJockey. But it may snow here tonight ... Honey? ...
  4. Yeah. What was he smokin'? I just had to think of something that had "conservative" in it and also hinted at repression (or over-regulation as it were). I guess I'm not getting the connection between liberal and over-regulation. Help me out here (at the risk of getting off-thread).
  5. White collar conservative flashin' down the street pointin' their plastic finger at me, ha! -Jimi Hendrix
  6. I said this on a similar topic (and at the risk of repeating myself): "As far as padders and cheaters go, I think communities such as the geocaching community, tend toward self-regulation. My perception of the geocaching community is that we are, for the most part, honest and good people. I'm sure that there is a very small minority who would stop at nothing to bring their numbers up. Most folks are good at smelling rats and I think most of us would tend to distance ourselves from those kinds of people." I agree with Criminal - no more stinking rules. Let your conscience be your guide (and hopefully you were raised right).
  7. Let's quantify a "significant" amount of time, because this is a BIG pet peeve of mine. I'm not waiting more than two days for a response acknowledging that I got the right answer from a tarnished brass plaque at the foot of a statue of some Spanish explorer. Is that really cheating or being cheated?
  8. My folks live in Gardnerville and we visit every spring break. Here's one I like that is, at least, a good starting point for a x-country ski or snow shoe excursion at this time of the year. Old Hwy 50
  9. I did this one not too long ago Salmon. The only logical place to park is in the school lot. The only feasible way to get to the cache is through the school. I did feel a little creepy walking through the school, even though it was the evening of a school holiday. Had I been with my kids, I would have felt better. The cache description does indicate that it is an evening cache. It was a nice cache in a great location. I think as long as the description indicates that traversing a school ground is required and the best time is during non-school hours, it should be allowable. I don't think caches should be allowed on actual developed school grounds (school meaning pre-school thru 12). In the case of this cache it wasn't.
  10. My kids' sense of humor revolves around human excretory functions AND they're American.
  11. Most of the posted pictures of my kids are taken from behind. Wifey is more leery of the caching population than I am. Newspapers are always posting pictures of my kids (NOT arrest photos!). I would think that those pictures would expose them to more local cretins than this site does. -WR That is a very good point. I never thought of the "picture in the newspaper" aspect, which is usually accompanied by a name, school, team, etc. Geocaching.com is considerably safer than a picture in the newspaper.
  12. As far as padders and cheaters go, I think communities such as the geocaching community, tend towards self-regulation. 13. I'm starting to post more pictures. The resizing hasn't had a noticeable or disturbing adverse affect. I'm very careful not to post any photos of the cache location or anything that would be a significant spoiler. I just like to show some scenery or something special about the area. I notice that some people post photos of their children. I've been reluctant to do this. Am I being overprotective? Does anyone have any thoughts on posting photos of your kids?
  14. Yes, you are so right and my apologies to you. My intention was to point out that there are two sides of the coin. I did not intend to start a political debate. Somewhere, I lost the humor of the misguided sunken vessel, and it is pretty funny. Its true, so they say, regarding the sewage flushing action in the Straits, but there is no city in the States that discharges raw sewage to any body of water. The Cominco issue is a whole other story not worth any more time in this thread. But the curious should learn a little more about it. I do love Canada and feel very welcome there, right from the git go crossing the border. I bagged the easy virtuals around Inner Harbor Victoria with the family this last summer. Crossing back into the States is an exasperatingly rude experience. My great-grandparents on my father's mother's side were from Canada, which makes me about 1/8 Canadian. Can we be friends now?
  15. The City of Victoria dumps raw sewage into the Strait. The Cominco smelter has dumped heavy metal waste into the Columbia River on the Canadian side of the border and contaminated Lake Roosevelt so bad that it is being considered for listing as a Superfund site. Maybe the Canadian government can deal with these issues before we pull that cement-laden scow from 1,500 feet down.
  16. I've only done one, this one Air Nav Aids and I thought it was pretty cool and educational since I fly around once in awhile on bidness. I don't go out of my way for locationless caches but I AM looking for a yellow jeep.
  17. No one has mentioned the "ten essentials" so here they are: 1. Matches 2. Fire starter 3. Map 4. Compass 5. Flashlight, extra batteries and bulb 6. Extra food 7. Extra clothing 8. Sunglasses 9. First aid kit 10. Pocket knife
  18. Don't wear anything made from 100% cotton. Once cotton gets wet, it will take forever to dry and will suck your body heat away like an Oreck vacuum as seen on TV. Cotton kills. I like a first layer of polyester long underwear. The newer versions don't seem to pick up as much body stink as the older versions and they feel better next to the skin. The second layer is a medium weight polyester fleece pullover. If its really cold, I'll have medium weight fleece pants or another layer of heavier polyester long under wear. I have a final outer layer of nylon or nylon/goretex pants and parka shell. I mix and match depending on the temperature and activity. I also like surplus military wool pants and sweaters because they're warm as hell and usually shed snow well. I wear two layers of socks - an inner lightweight polyester with a wool or wool-blend heavy outer sock. Boots to suit the occasion - skiing, slogging through mud/snow - as long as they're waterproofed and comfortable. Gloves also to suit the occasion as long as they're warm and dry. Mittens for real cold. The key is to add layers before you get cold and shed layers before you sweat. Its also nice to have clothing with zippers so you can fine-tune and regulate body heat that way rather than shedding/adding a layer. Arm pit zippers on parka shells are good for that. Don't forget the hat. A lot of body heat goes out the top of your head (among other things). Any good outdoor store should have what you need. Expect to pay more if it has a Gucci outdoor label on it (e.g. North Face, Patagonia, etc.). Having a Gucci label probably means its really good but not necessarily better. Shop around. edit: forgot the glove part
  19. What's the question again?
  20. Let's see, who would be more fun to hang out with on a long road trip? Renegade Knight or BassoonPilot?
  21. A well written log enriches the experience for everyone in this game. Writing is such a great form of communication. Its great to see the resurrection of writing with the advent of email, these forums, and logging finds. By all means write, then write some more.
  22. There are three caches within a half mile of the house that I've been able to walk to. Oddly, I've only recently found two of those although, they have been there for months. Our backyard backs up to one of the largest undeveloped parks in our town, 120 acres of typical second-growth northwest forest that I estimate was logged at least 75 years ago, maybe 100. I appreciate the solitude of looking out my back window and I'd be very reluctant to place a cache there within site. Besides, there's already a cache in that park a comfortable half-mile away. But I'm thinking of placing a cache somewhere within the 120 acres that is not within view, not close to the other cache, and more of a challenge than the other cache.
  23. If you're planning a trip along Interstate 5 on the west coast, do a keyword search for "I Hate I-5." There are quite a few caches along I-5 with the "I Hate I-5" as part of their name.
