  1. Folks Ignore my previous question, I now see that I was looking at the original download from Aug 12 and the script has updated (probably several times) since then so I can now see the latest version that's actually running, which does indeed include the line I'm supposed to look for. Then followed simplysup's instructions & I now have OS maps back, so huge thanks for that. Have left the previous post in case it helps anyone else. I notice that that method installs GME directly rather than through Tampermonkey (which I've now removed, it wasn't doing anything else), does that have any implications for managing GME in future, eg do I still get the auto-updates that seem to have been happening in the background without me knowing ?
  2. Thanks MartyBartfast. Looks like that's the problem but at present I can't get the fix to work (my script doesn't look like the one I'm supposed to edit !), I'll continue correspondence in the other thread.
  3. Hi folks I'm trying to do this tweak so I can get OS maps back in Chrome, but I'm having the same trouble as Growler & can't find the lines to change. NB I'm definitely not a scripting guru. So far I've found the script file from where I downloaded it months ago, and searched for the text "extendleaflet". That finds two instances, neither of which seem to relate to the line I'm supposed to change, as follows: 1st instance: quote if(typeof L === "object") {\ GME_extendLeaflet();\ window.setTimeout(GME_load,1000);\ } else {\ unquote 2nd instance: quote function GME_extendLeaflet() {\ L.QuadkeyLayer = L.TileLayer.extend({\ tile2quad: function(x, y, z) {\ unquote In neither case does the next line correspond to the one I'm supposed to edit. All suggestions gratefully received, thanks.
  4. Hi all I seem to have lost the very useful OS maps feature. I still have the full list of maps available in the top right corner, but when I select "OS Maps" I just get a blank background with all the cache icons superimposed. All the other possible map types continue to work fine. Is this just me or are others getting this too ?
  5. This is taking so long, it's looking like it's not a simple technical bug fix. Let me take a punt on what may be happening behind the scenes. The clue is in Lesane's statement on 28 Dec "We recently moved the Trimble phones to our new API". That sounds innocuous, but it's worth having a quick skim of the Groundspeak API license agreement. Scroll right down to Schedule A at the bottom and you find some interesting restrictions on use for Basic Members - obviously the intent is to encourage upgrades to Premium. Can't really blame Groundspeak for wanting to monetise their investment, but nevertheless GCN doesn't comply with Schedule A. I know absolutely nothing about how GCN might be coded, but my guess would be that changing it to comply with the new API is not a trivial activity. Now look at Moun10bike's comment of 12 Feb "Trimble ... have so far failed to correctly update their application to use our current API.". Translation: Trimble have been told to comply with the license agreement, possibly accompanied with an "or else". I would hope that the Trimble suits are arguing on our behalf that a new license agreement should not be applied retrospectively to an existing application. If so, the fact that this is dragging on suggests that they are not winning. Or perhaps they are deciding whether it is worth them investing resources into updating GCN so that it complies - obviously if they can't see a commercial return on the investment there's no point in them doing it. Either GCN is about to die because it can't be modified to comply with the license, or it'll return in a form that imposes severe restrictions on non-Premium members. All this is of course pure speculation, but it kind of makes sense to me. And it would also explain why we're getting no traction from the Trimble techies, because the issue isn't with them to resolve, it's with Trimble's commercial/legal people. Anyone got any recommendations for a cache app that works with Symbian (the choice isn't huge !) ?
  6. I'm also having the problems of found caches showing up in the cache listing contrary to the app's settings, and being unable to create field notes from the app (even though the app happily declares "Cache has been logged !"). I've reported it to Trimble, who's response is: "Unfortunately, the issue that you are facing is because of the recent changes that Groundspeak (geocaching.com) made to their system. Their engineers have been contacted and we hope to have it fixed soon. Unfortunately they have not provided us a time frame when it will be released." Could someone from Groundspeak please provide an update, and if possible a timescale for a fix ? Thanks !
  7. It is indeed all working again, many thanks to the folks at Groundspeak for fixing it.
  8. I don't have the option of switching back to Google Maps, I just get a splash screen inviting me to become a Premium member, so I guess that confirms this is a Premium-only work around. So it seems I have to shell out some more dosh or limp along with unsatisfactory maps. Even if I did pay up, I would lose the option of having OS maps (v useful here in UK).
  9. Just noticed there's another thread on this problem (here), containing firstly what looks like a plausible explanation for what's happening (although it's not clear why something that used to work no longer does - what changed ?), and secondly a recent comment from a Groundspeak person to the effect that they're looking at it. Sounds hopeful.
  10. Yes, the problem seems to be widespread, see here. Don't think this is a problem with jiri's brilliant script though, because it happens on all the available maps not just the ones the script adds. Grrr !
  11. Yup, me too. Can't interact with caches at all on the Chrome map, but tried it with IE and it works (as well as IE ever did - starting it up reminded me why I stopped using it). Would really like this working again with Chrome, 'cos I use Jiri's script to get caches superimposed on an OS map, and that doesn't work with IE. So is anyone likely to be looking at this - is it a Groundspeak problem to get their product working with Chrome, or a Google problem to get Chrome working with a popular website, or even an MS problem because of the suggestion that it might have been a Windows update that triggered it ? This could be too easy to fall between the cracks !
  12. I've had problems with this (incredibly useful add-on) working intermittently - I even posted a Q about it a while back, and I see others seem to be having similar issues. I've figured out a work around that I thought I'd pass on in case it helps anyone else. It seems to depend on how you open Chrome. On my aging XP PC I have a "Favourites" entry on my Start menu which includes all the legacy Favourites from when I used IE. I've set Chrome as the default browser, so if I click on GC.com in that list, Chrome starts up and all looks OK. Except that the GME script doesn't run, and you get one frustrated cacher who can't print the map he wants. If however I start Chrome first, and then select GC.com from the bookmarks imported into Chrome, GME works and I get the OS maps as I expect. Quite why this should be I haven't a clue - probably something to do with the configuration of my PC - but now that I know about it I can work round it. Maybe worth trying if anyone else is finding GME to be intermittent.
  13. Hi jri, many thanks for the response. I confirm it's all working OK now without me having to do anything else; I must have just been unlucky with the timing earlier. BTW, I really appreciate the effort you've put in to get this working. I really like to have an OS map of the area I'm caching, and the official OS "Get-a-Map" isn't nearly as versatile as your script for getting the caches superimposed, and being able to print map snippets at a legible size. Many thanks.
  14. Hi I've been using this script for a few weeks now to get OS maps with caches superimposed, but this morning it seems to have stopped working. When I click "map it" on my GC profile page, I do not get the option any more to select OS maps - indeed Tampermonkey itself seems unresponsive. Is this me, or is there something wrong somewhere else ? Thanks.
  15. Sorry, can't help with that one - can't claim to be a geek on these things ! I bought GCN through Nokia's Ovi store, which sorted all the stuff about whether it was compatible with my phone. Is there an equivalent app store for Sony-Ericson ? If not, I guess the only thing would be to contact Trimble direct to ask if there's a version compatible with your phone. Cheers
  16. Folks Many thanks for these helpful words. I'll have a play with GSAK. Cheers.
  17. Thanks for that. I'm aware I can use an intermediary program like EasyGPS to edit the download, but - being inherently lazy (!) - I was looking for a way to simply click the download button and be able to store the name & Coords without having to do any manual editing. Haven't tried GSAK: can you set it to drop the GC automatically, or do you still have to edit all the names ? Thanks again.
  18. My trusty old etrex yellow will only store waypoint names of 6 characters or less. That was fine when cache names were only 6 characters long, but nowadays 7 characters is the norm so the waypoint name gets truncated when downloaded directly to the GPSr. I have to download first to EasyGPS, then manually rename all the waypoints to something <6 characters before sending them to the GPSr. Is there a way to adjust the eTrex storage so it'll accept longer waypoint names, if necessary at the expense of being able to store fewer waypoints ? Thanks in advance.
  19. I tried using GCL on my Nokia 5800 a few months ago. When it worked it was fine. But like you I found that it just hung without warning, so I would spend ages wondering whether it was still trying to download or had failed. I got fed up with this, bit the bullet, and invested in Trimble's Geocache Navigator. This has it's faults, but at least I can rely on it working when I want it to - and the support's better for a paid-for product. Hope that helps.
  20. Folks, Thanks for your input. If others aren't getting this, it looks as if this problem, whatever it is, is at my end rather than being a Groundspeak problem. I've also successfully accessed the link using my phone browser. So I guess the problem is somewhere within the arcane settings of my IE installation, which is a bit odd because I'm not aware of anything being changed recently. Wasn't life easier before computers !
  21. IE8, XP SP3, no known recent changes (except for regular MS patches) - pretty bog standard really. No, not tried another browser: thought I'd ask whether anyone gets the same before going to the lengths of installing a new browser just for this. Anyone else please ? Thanks.
  22. Hi all Couple of new caches in my area GC2RXDK & GC2RXHW. On both of them, underneath the list of waypoints, there's a link "Show Hidden Waypoints". Clicking this link on both cache listings produces an error message: "403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied." Is this something I'm doing, or do others get this too ? If it's a system error, to whom should it be reported ? Cheers
  23. I've been using Geocaching Live on my 5800 for a few months now, and am just about to give up on it. I find it unreliable and frustrating. When I ask it to download caches, sometimes it does it quickly, and sometimes (more often than not) I'm still waiting 20 minutes later, after repeatedly re-trying. Maps are slow to load as well, even when I'm in good cell coverage and have a good GPS fix. It's like there's some kind of blockage somewhere that just stops everything. Pity, because when it works, it does what I need. But not when I need it. Has anyone else found it unreliable ?
  24. Hi all I would appreciate some advice please about a GC app for my Nokia 5800XM phone. My caching activities tend to be in areas with cell signal so I don't mind having an app that downloads stuff on the fly. I have tried Locify, but didn't like the way it filled my photo gallery with maps and had very limited functionality (eg it doesn't download complete cache details). Plus you can't log a find from within the app. I have tried Geocaching Live, which in theory has the right functionality but is very frustrating & unreliable to use: it seems to just lock up whilst downloading, so you end up waiting around like a lemon for the phone to decide whether it's going to display any maps or cache details. Support is via a Google Group that is a bit hit-and-miss as to whether anyone answers your question. The next obvious one to try is Trimble's Geocache Navigator, but it's £26.99 from Ovi. Being a cheapskate I'd kind of like some user recommendations before parting with the cash (cache ?). Does it work better than the two I've tried ? Or is there something else out there (free or paid-for) that's better ? All thoughts gratefully received, thanks.
  25. Hi I can't find a forum related to GCL, so am posting here - apologies if this isn't the right place ? I've tried the GCL Google group, but can't even get my Q published never mind get an answer. I've just installed GCL on my Nokia 5800, and am struggling to understand how you post a "Find" on the cache page at GC.com. On the phone, I see how to "mark" a cache, with any comments I want to include. Then I click "upload to server" and (when I've come out of GCL and browsed to the WWW GCL Beta pages) I can then see it in "My Live". Then I click "Log it", which then just takes me to the "Post a new log" page for the cache, and I have to start again by entering my log comments anew. Is that the way it's supposed to work, or have I missed something ? If that is what's supposed to happen, then it all seems rather time-consuming and clumsy. Is there really no way to enter the text of a log just the once, and have it published to GC.com straight away ? Thanks
