  1. Just a thought, but have you recently cleaned out your browser by deleting cookies, temporary internet files, etc ? If so, that's where your custom mapsource data is held. Been there, done that. You just need to add the OS Maps source back in using the same method you did originally. Earlier posts in this thread #705, #706, #708, & #711 discuss this.
  2. Apologies for posting to this thread nearly a year after the last contribution, but it does seem an appropriate place to ask for advice. I'm also pretty green about geocoins, so this may be a daft query (I won't mind if you tell me!). Situation is that a cacher has added a note to my cache listing that simply links to his geocoin. Neither the coin nor the owner have ever visited my cache, indeed the coin may be anywhere in the world. Anyone following that link will find the necessary codes to log a "find" of the coin. My first reaction is that this isn't within the spirit of the game because anyone logging a coin find won't have physically seen it, so this doesn't seem to be within Groundspeak's definitions of either "retrieving" or "discovering" the coin. Especially given the comment earlier in this thread that "...Geocaching HQ discourages virtual logging of trackables ...". So I don't like his use of my cache listing to advertise this coin and I'm tempted to delete the note. But having found and read this thread I see that many people do seem to get pleasure out of logging such "finds", and I don't want to be a killjoy so am I right to object to this cacher using my listing to encourage a practice that Geocaching HQ seems to discourage ? Any opinions about the etiquette of this gratefully received, thanks !
  3. OK, I understand, and thanks for the response. Just have to remember to export first before spring cleaning ! Might be worth including something about this in the documentation ?
  4. I'd like to add my thanks to jri for the effort put in to create and maintain this phenomenally useful add-on to GC maps. It is very much appreciated out here and I am totally in awe of people who know how to do this sort of thing. Regarding this ... ... I don't know whether the following counts as an (un)interesting feature, a possible enhancement, or something that we just have to live with. Whenever I do a periodic spring clean of Chrome (deleting cache, cookies, history, etc) - often at the behest of some "help desk" trying to get something else to work - I find I lose my custom map sources. GME itself is still there but suddenly I've only got the default GC set of maps, and I have to go through the performance of adding them again. It's not a big deal, and I'd quite understand if it's low down the list of priorities, but if there's some way to protect the map sources from inadvertent deletion that'd be really helpful.
  5. Thanks Pieman, just what I needed ! Couple of additional steps in there for Chrome I had to puzzle out, so for the benefit of anyone else who doesn't know their way around these things, the steps that worked for me are: 1. Right-click on Tampermonkey icon 2. Select "Options" 3. Select tab "Installed userscripts" 4. Click on GME 5. Scroll down to line 2644, add the "//" 6. Click the "Save" button. Job done, OS maps and corrected locations of solved puzzles are now back on the small maps on the cache pages.
  6. Ummm, for those of us who are script-illiterate but willing to have a go, is there any chance of someone providing some instructions about how to do this ? Where do I find the script itself, how do I back-up the original before fiddling with it, what do I do to persuade Chrome to use the new version after I've edited it, etc ? Thanks.
  7. Not sure if this might help anyone having difficulty with OS maps, but here goes. I decided to do some general clearing up of Chrome - browsing history, download history, cookies, plug-in data & the (browser) cache, that sort of stuff. OS Maps stopped working, it looks like the clear-out deleted the Bing map source I'd added. GME was still there, I just didn't have OS maps in the drop down or in the GME settings. So I had to find the original post explaining how to add Bing maps (thanks again, JimJinks), dig out my original key - which is still valid - and recreate it all so now I'm back to normal. Not sure I know why a simple browser clear out should have deleted a mapsource (and if it was explained I'm not sure I'd understand !), but maybe that's why some people find OS maps suddenly stops working for no apparent reason ? wphil: sorry this is a bit late, but posts #636 & #644 in this thread give the detailed instructions about how to add in the mapsource to both sets of GME settings, once you have your Bing maps key. Now if only I could get GC maps NOT to freeze just when I need it (usually on a Sunday morning when planning the afternoon walk), I'd be a happy bunny !
  8. Like uk_searcher, I value having the OS maps, and being confident I'm on a public footpath. So this method from JimJinks to restore it is just great, thanks for posting this. Slightly nervous about exceeding the free limits, but I can't imagine that one person using a key maybe a couple of times a week is going to get anywhere near the limits, but does anyone know how the billable aspect might manifest itself should the limits be exceeded ? They haven't got my credit card details anyway ...
  9. Before discovering GME, I recall experimenting with the Ordnance Survey's "Get-a-map" service (http://www.getamap.ordnancesurveyleisure.co.uk) which has a feature to superimpose a GPX or KML file over an OS map. It's a bit of a clumsy site to use, plus - not currently being a Premium Member - I've no easy access to GPX downloads, so I've never got it to work successfully but it may be possible to avoid having to add a set of caches to a map manually.
  10. Thanks for confirming I'm not imagining things, and for pointing out the workaround. I didn't know you could drag tabs between windows like that ! I'll use the two-windows trick whenever I want a map with corrected locations on it. Odd that the Chrome defect report suggests this has been an issue since July 13. I don't use this all that often, but I'm sure I've used it successfully since then. Thanks for the help, and keep up the good work !
  11. OK, just me then. That's the bit that isn't working. I drag the "?" onto the map tab, and nothing happens, the tab doesn't open, so all I can do is drop the "?" onto the tab - which of course doesn't work. Using: Chrome Version 41.0.2272.101 m, which Google claims is up to date Tampermonkey 3.10.60 GME v0.7.2 I've tried several solved puzzle caches with the same negative result, so here's a couple: GC5FCET, GC5FBXD All thoughts gratefully received, even if I do seem to be in a minority of one (and hence I'd understand if you have other priorities).
  12. I'm pretty sure that when you have the maps page (with GME enabled) open in one tab, and a cache page containing corrected coords open in another tab, you used to be able to show the corrected location on the main map by dragging the "?" symbol next to the cache name onto the maps tab. Doesn't seem to work now, you just end up downloading a file. Is something broken, or am I mis-remembering how it used to work ?
  13. Hmmm, this looks decidedly murky. Firstly I'm not sure the current Terms of Use are the ones I signed up to originally. If that were so then GCN would have been non-compliant when I bought it and I can't believe Groundspeak would have let Trimble get away with that. I'm pretty sure the API, and with it the Terms of Use, became more restrictive within the last couple of years and I don't recall Groundspeak bringing that subtle change to my attention. Does anyone have access to previous versions ? Secondly item D(i) does not distinguish between Basic & Premium so arguably even Premium Members using an approved app are also violating it. A reasonable assumption for users would be that the app developers would have obtained the necessary permission (it's implicit in the API), it's not up to individual users to apply for specific written permission when they buy an app. So how does a user know whether any particular app complies or not ? Am I in violation because I'm using GCN ? And if it's correct that Groundspeak's own app allows Basic Users to get more than 3 caches (jury's out on this, the details on Google Play are unclear) then GS obviously aren't particularly worried about violations by Basic Members. BTW my problem with Premium Membership is not with the concept of paying for something (if I use it, I ought to pay a fair price for it), but rather with GS's pricing structure. Here in the UK I'm charged £24.99 for 12 months. If I was in the US I'd be charged $29.99 (that's £17.86 in proper money today) and if I was in the eurozone I'd be charged 29.99 euros (ie around £24, similar to the UK price). So why does GS charge UK & European users 40% more than US users ? Are they actively trying to discourage us ? Anyway, back to the topic in hand. I now understand that if I want the functionality I currently get from GCN then either I have to violate the Terms of Use by using a non-API compliant app or I have to become a Premium Member at an inflated cost. Thanks for your inputs folks, I think I now know enough to make some decisions.
  14. Hi Andronicus, thanks for the input. As far as I can tell from the write-ups of both NeonGeo & CacheSense on Google Play, both of those apps fail my wish-list because they limit Basic members to just three cache listings per day. That's not what I get from GCN, and I was hoping to find an Android app that provided the same functionality. Am I looking for something that doesn't exist ? Or do I have to shell out for Premium membership - the "benefits" have never seemed particularly compelling before so I haven't bothered ?
  15. Hi folks Just want to ask for a bit of clarification about some of the very useful answers in this thread. I've been using Geocache Navigator (GCN) on my trusty old Nokia 5800 (ie Symbian) for a couple of years now, but the Nokia is slowly dieing so I'm looking to upgrade to an Android phone and wondering which app gets me closest to what GCN does. Having looked at a number of the apps mentioned here I can't easily see what each does. So can anyone advise (from your own use of one or more of the various apps) which ones will do the following: 1. Give me a list of any number of caches of all types within a specified area, allowing me to exclude those I've already found. NB I'm a Basic member, not Premium. Am I right in understanding that Groundspeak now limit non-premium members to only 3 caches - well GCN gave me a lot more so that's what I want. 2. Display those caches on a map (GCN uses only Open Street Map and displays just one at a time, but ideally I'd want UK OS maps and the ability to show all caches within the map area). 3. Allow me to save a list of cache details (description, location, hint, etc) for use off-line where there's no cell coverage. 4. Allow me to input lat & long manually. 4. Give me a "radar" display when I'm close to each GZ (easier to follow than a simple pointy arrow) 5. Allow me to log a basic "Found it" or "DNF" Field Note that I can update with more details later. Is there any single app for Android that can do these things ? Thanks in advance
  16. OK, got it now, huge thanks for fixing so fast. Didn't update smoothly though, so just in case this helps anyone else this is what happened: Attempt #1: went to http://geo.inge.org.uk/gme.htm#install, clicked the green button: nothing happened. Attempt #2: clicked the Tampermonkey icon in chrome, selected "Check for userscript updates": nothing happened. Attempt #3: opened the Tampermonkey dashboard, selected GME, selected "Trigger an update" then "Start": TM chuntered a while, then said there was no update available Attempt #4 went back to http://geo.inge.org.uk/gme.htm#install, this time refreshed the page before clicking the green install button: bingo, I got 0.7.0.2. What's more the TM dashboard now says that's what I've got and it works on the map. I can only assume that anyone - like me - who had been trying the green button earlier would find themselves accessing a cached (!) page unless they force a reload of the page before trying again. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" - too right !
  17. Ummm, sorry to be dim here, but how exactly do I get the updated version ? I was using the method of direct instal into Chrome, but following Google's recent actions I've installed Tampermonkey. Last time I used that, I think I remember that any updates installed automatically. Now however that hasn't happened, and when I delve into Tampermonkey and force it to look for an update it just tells me the latest version is 0.7.0, ie the latest one isn't available. Can't say I'm particularly familiar with Tampermonkey, is there some setting I have to set to get it to search for and instal updates automatically ? Or is there some other method ? I've tried the "Just click the green instal button" method on this page http://geo.inge.org.uk/gme.htm#install and that doesn't seem to do the trick either. (Quite understand if responses are not instant, I guess you have much more important things going on now ! Best wishes to the family.)
  18. I tried this when it was first published, and it worked. Now I actually want to use it for real, and it doesn't work, I just get a downloaded file. I'm using Chrome Version 35.0.1916.114 m & GME v0.7.0 I have the cache page with the corrected listings open in one tab (the correction is visible on the small map on that page), and the main GC.com map open in another tab. I grab the icon next to the cache title on the listing page, and drag it onto the tab with the map ... Chrome then switches to that tab, and I ensure I drag the icon onto the map itself. Result is a notification that I've downloaded a file, and a complete absence of any corrected location on the main map. What am I doing wrong ? NB when I did have it working last week, I ended up with too many things on the main map. Is there any way to selectively remove the ones you don't want other than closing the map down and starting over ? Thanks for the enhancement BTW, having OS maps overlaid with cache locations is unspeakably brilliant !
  19. Thanks for the ideas folks, but this is looking to be more trouble than it's worth. I got the script file transferred to the phone by USB cable, but couldn't get any maps to display when I browsed to GC.com in Opera Mobile (definitely got that rather than Mini). However I don't think the problem's with GME, because when I removed all the settings back to vanilla I still couldn't get any maps to display, and the GC.com website looks a bit clunky in the browser anyway. I've had OM quite a while (version 10), so I'm guessing that there's now an issue between the GC.com site and my version of OM; tried to upgrade to the latest version, only to find that it seems they've discontinued it and if I want to use Opera now I can only get Mini. So good luck with Android, and if I ever switch to that I'll give it another go !
  20. Having realised that GME should work on Opera Mobile, I thought I'd see whether I could get it to work using OM on my clunky old Symbian-powered Nokia 5800 phone (well, I like it anyway !). I've seen the instructions here, have created the folder and added the settings in OM. But I'm struggling with the apparently simple step of saving a copy of the script file in the folder. When I do this in Chrome, it's simple: I right click the green button and "Save link as ..."; but in OM on my phone I have no right-click option, and clicking the green button just opens a new window with the script itself in it. Any ideas how, in OM, I download the file to the phone ? I guess I can probably save it on my PC and then connect the phone by cable to transfer the file across, but that seems a bit long-winded. This might be a really daft question, but I've exhausted my limited knowledge here ! Thanks in advance.
  21. Egad Sirs, you're right ! Search for caches with GCN, it finds all of them near me. Create a field note for one of them, repeat the search - that one disappears. Go into my account, delete the field note, repeat the search - it's back again ! So all we have to do is create field notes for all our found caches, don't delete them when logging, and GCN will be back to normal ! Hmmm, a few problems there, methinks.
  22. Just discovered, after accidentally hitting the "Log cache as found" button in GCN, that cache logging is working again. Unfortunately the filtering-out of found caches when searching remains broken.
  23. Aha, got it now - you right-click on the link, "Save target as", then drag it onto the extensions page. As I said, I was being a bit dim. Many thanks for the combined efforts of mike142sl & jri to get that sorted !
  24. Er, no, sorry, don't think that's it. That allows you to install the version published on the Userscripts page, which seems to be 0.6.4, and requires manual editting to get the OS maps back. I've already done that. What I'm after is jri's work-in-progress version, which ought to be accessible via his link, but in Chrome that link just produces the "Can't install scripts from here" warning.
  25. Sorry to be a bit dim here, but how do I actually install that work-in-progress version ? I'm using Chrome, so clicking on the link simply opens a new tab with a message that I can't install scripts from that page, and when I OK that the tab closes. Is there some way I can download the script and drag it into the Chrome extensions page as per other instructions in this thread ? Thanks - it's a great product, and I for one am really glad you're working away at it !
