  1. Geocaching has been my main obsession for the last 6 years or so, others include my riding 1979 Ducati (Darmah ss)and maintaining it. Rather sadly some might say but I also really enjoy my work and think of it as something of a paid hobby (I design loudspeaker drive units). I got into Geocaching as I like long walks, I am starting to reach my limit of one day walks and planning some overnight ones. Hope to go to Simply Pauls extreme event in Scotland in June (on Eigg) and do a couple of 2-3 day hikes whilst I am there.
  2. With the OP's cache finds in Oklahoma USA I guess this is indeen in the wrong (Uniten kingdom) forum ratehr that one of the USA ones
  3. I just tried again and it works fine now (for as lond as it lasts)
  4. Same here, cant get cache pages Etc, there was me thinking it was some form of censorship here in China
  5. OK - come on, tell me where / how!!!! Hi HazelS From GC.com, select your profile from menu down left handside, statistics is a new option. It sits alongside souvenirs, your friends Etc. I hope that answers your question?
  6. Hi Simply Paul, thanks for the input, so are you planning to hike up to the event on Eigg and then back to a camp site or are you thinking wild camping? If you are still thinking long way up and short way down then I guess getting to a campsite after a short event meet would be OK
  7. I am starting to come up with a travel plan, I intend to do the Eigg meet, as Simply PAul is aiming at 7PM summit I take it some wild camping will be in order (or a late arrival back at some pub with a camp site) I really want to do Ben Nevis via the CMD arete as I have done the tourist route a few times so that one is in the mix. Unless I can find a boat in and hike out option for Knoydart then I think I will go over to the east where there is a CacheCon which would make for another wild camping couple of days. I hope to finish up on Scotlands oldest then head for home (Suffolk) making a full week out of it.
  8. Has anyone here done ben nevis the winter version ? both classed as the same cache as the ammobox will be beneath a few feet of snow, the path is invisible, you need good navigation to avoid the cornices, crampons for the iced up scree slope etc and still have to walk a fair few miles. My sister and I did the Ben way back in April 2007, snow on the summit plateau, 50m visibility, loads of people turning back at the top of the zig zag where the surface turned to sheet ice. No chance of getting the summer cache but the winter one was not too bad. A great day followed Scarfel and Snowdon over the next two days.
  9. Of course they could already be cachers, in which case anyone care to guess who would be the most likely candadates.
  10. Like HazelS I saw the video diary on Countryfile, checked for my nearest cache and went for a look. Having found my first one I went on to find 50 with map, compass and streetmap printout before a freind took pity on me and gave me a Garmin GPS12. My sister Gillywig is of course made of sterner stuff and has done over 900 without a GPS. I prefer to go paperless using Garmin GPSMAP 60 Csx with TOPO maps, iPhone for the HTML cache pages and Garmin Nuvi satnav with POI's for the roadwork side of things.
  11. I made the hike out to Eee by 'eck Mam it's parky (GC20BNF) whilst in Scotland, which had never been found in a year. Unfortunately the cache was not there so I replaced it as requested by thr CO. I know some of these remote caches dont get many visitors but for me a 22Km, 8 hour hike is the perfect cache.
  12. This event is firmly in my plans for next year, never felt inspired to go to an event cache before but this one has caught my imagination as a treat to myself for my 50th birthday. I am thinking I really should include GC1T7V1 (Three Peaks Challenge Bonus: Ben Nevis) also by simply Paul so I will be re-visiting the peaks of Sonwdon and Scarfell before hand. A trip up Ben Nevis during the week of this event should then have the three peaks bonus within my grasp. Anyone else thinking of attempting the Three Peaks Challenge Bonus whilst in Scotland for the event cache?
  13. When I am out in a cache rich area with only my iPhone I leave very limited logs just so I can see on the App where I have been and where I still have to go, I then complete the logs when I get to a PC. Normally I use my GPS in which case I can change the caches to found to keep me on track. Are the 'empty' logs still empty a few days later?
  14. Hi Simply Paul, looks like a great location, I am planning a trip to Scotland for some hiking around that time next year so could arrange for the dates to coincide. Is it a serious hike to the meet (which is great for me) or is it more of a climb/serious scramble
  15. Bag of mixed nuts and rasins always goes down well along with some nutty type cereal bar, as for drinks usually water.
  16. Great tip and well worth remembering
  17. Welcome, hope you enjoy it and find some time to go out caching in a great part of the country
  18. 49216 miles and 1477 Caches so I am on 33. Some Caching in both China and USA will no doubt have helped.
  19. If DNF's are a big part of your ranking then there will no doubt be a few cachers who will DNF whole series just to climb the ranks. Anyone for a DNF trip to Scotland based around GCWMQ2 where there are loads we could try to find but fail. I for one will stick to caching for the fun of it and the interesting places it takes me even if I only find a few caches each trip.
  20. I found my first 50 Caches without a GPS and all were memorable for the work that went into them with OS maps Etc. My very first one took some time as I recall but worth it for the look of joy on my daughters face when we found the "treasure" and like many since took me to places I would not otherwise have gone. After 50 finds one of my non caching friends took pity on me and gave me his spare GPS. My sister Gillywig on the other hand is made of sterner stuff and has found 202 caches without a GPS.
  21. I found my first 50 without a GPS then a friend took pity on me and gave me a very old Garmin, I am now hooked and have a Garmin with maps onboard.
  22. I use a translator such as Babel fish which will translate a whole web page from/to almost any language.
  23. The postcode function on the GC main page works fine for me as long as I add uk after the postcode, IP1 1AA gives me somewhere is Spain, IP1 1AA UK gives me Ipswich Suffolk. This seems to work for any part of the country.
  24. How about CacheCon, a concentration of caches all in close proximity. I tend to do all the interesting caches in an area first then when there are no good ones nearby I sweep a local CacheCon to boost my numbers.
