  1. First of all, let me say that I really appreciate the many changes that have been incorporated into the iPhone Geocaching app. My current question is: Could a way of deleting individual logs from the list be incorporated in addition to the "Delete All" tab? Perhaps a method similar to the way that the Mail app allows the user to delete as many messages as desired - or individually by swiping the entry from left to right. Thanks. Gringo871
  2. Would it be possible to have a link included so that when another member's found geocaches are listed, they could be viewed on GoogleMaps in the same manner as viewing a pocket query? This could be a 'perk' for Premium Members.
  3. I haven't read this thread before but it seems relevant to a situation that I had recently. A cacher claimed a find with the statement: "Couldn't sign log since it was too wet but I can describe it if you wish". I suspected fraud since the container is waterproof. I went to the location and sure enough, it was dry as a bone. I contacted the cacher and requested a detailed description. By return email, he said that it was in the right side railing. I asked for more details and he said that it was in a wooden plug which was too swollen to extract. Wrong. I politely informed him that he was incorrect, that I was going to delete his post (which I did) and invited him to try again as it would give him great satisfaction if he found it. This is the first time that I have deleted a member's post but I feel that it was justified as they clearly had not found my well hidden cache.
  4. I have a MacBook and use both GeoJournal and MacCaching. I've become more accustomed to GeoJournal and have it set up to import my various pocket queries. I have five that cover the entire Northern NY area and refresh them periodically. GeoJournal allows me to have a separate category for each pocket query and to export any or all of the caches therein to my GPSr. When I'm going to do a total refresh for the area, I delete all the caches from the GPSr first, then empty the category in GeoJournal, re-import the pocket query and then re-export each of them to the handheld. I suggest that you try each program, become familiar with the characteristics and settle on one that you like best.
  5. While I have a Garmin 60 Cx and not a Lowrance, perhaps the same methods might work. Try bringing up an individual cache page and while your GPSr is connected via the USB port, hit the 'Send to my GPS' button. If that works, then get a program called GeoJournal. Set up pocket queries for your area and import these into GeoJournal. Choose the caches that you are interested in, and export them to your GPSr. There is another program called MacCaching that you might want to look at. Experiment with these programs until you are comfortable with their individual characteristics. Cheers!
  6. You might want to check out a neat program called GeoJournal, http://www.geoingenuity.com/main/. It will import GPX files directly from your mail server and then transfer the coordinates to your GPSr. It has many other interesting features that you may find valuable. I started out using MacCaching and then switched to GeoJournal.
  7. I've just begun using GeoJournal to organize my geocaches on my MacBook. I find that it compares quite favorably with MacCaching. Currently it isn't listed in the geocaching software on Groundspeak. Has anyone else tried this program and if so, what are your thoughts?
  8. No, the 60Cx does not do paperless caching. It is however an extremely accurate unit. Most of my 900+ caches were found using this GPSr. For the paperless part of the experience I'm considering either the Palm PDS with Cachemate or an iPhone. I'm holding out to see what Apple will do with the iPhone when it makes the new 3.0 OS official in June. Cheers and good caching! Gringo871
  9. I am considering purchasing an iPhone and have noticed that there are several apps for that device that purport to make geocaching a lot easier. One of these is produced by Groundspeak and the others are by various industrious individuals. Does anyone have an opinon as to which, if any, of these apps would be really useful to the geocacher? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. Gringo871
  10. My all time favorite multi-cache is Adirondack Murder Mystery - GCP8MW. Including the final cache, there are 22 stages. All the stages are in the Adirondack Park of New York - one is at the top of a mountain, two are hydro-caches, two others are night caches, some require the use of watercraft (canoe or kayak), several require hikes into extremely difficult terrain. What made this multi special was the planning that went into creating it, with a theme of a murder scene, possible victims, weapons, locations and perpetrators. One must be in good physical condition to complete all the stages. Since the cache was placed in July, 2005, only 10 persons have completed it. Check it out and the pictures that folks have posted to document their travails. The scenery alone is worth the effort. The cache was created by cacher NFA and has recently been adopted by members of Northern New York Geocachers.
  11. I've been a premium member for a couple of years and usually forget to renew until after the term of membership has expired. This time I'd like to renew ahead of time but can't seem to find any link that will allow me to do so easily (I have a non recurring Paypal membership). I prefer to activate the membership myself each year and an easy link on the geocaching website would make this much easier. The current instructions say to get the membership number from a previous Paypal transaction but when I enter this, I'm told that I've already renewed with this number. HELP!
  12. For FREE WiFi while on the road, I like to patronize the Panera Bread franchises that are popping up. Great food, excellent coffee and no charge for WiFi. What's not to like? Check out www.panerabread.com to locate their stores along your planned route. Gringo 871
  13. Welcome to the Club! If a cache has a good sized log, I put the date and time of discovery as well as some compliments regarding the placement, etc. If the log is a micro or even nano then only the date and signature. Some folks use fairly standard abbreviations such as: TFTC (Thanks for the cache), TN (Took nothing), and LN (Left nothing). When placing my own caches I put the name of the cache on the cover (or inside cover) of the log and label the first entry, FTF (First to find). If you've put out a particularly difficult to find cache, a congratulatory comment to finders is nice. Use your imagination and have fun!
  14. I have the 60Cx model, without the compass and altimeter. It is extremely superior to my old standard Vista. Reception under leaf cover is excellent. If the unit is kept in an upright position there will be less drift. The antenna on these units prefers to be upright. I haven't had any issues transferring cache coordinates from geocaching.com. Even the name of the cache gets transferred (into the notes field) as well as the GCxxxx label. I REALLY like my unit!!
  15. I recently purchased a 60Cx and immediately went back on eBay and bought a neoprene holder with a clear vinyl face which is designed specifically for this unit. (60CSx as well). The neoprene case comes with a ring on the back and a small carabiner which is designed to be clipped onto a pack strap or whatever. Also, there is a velcro strap on the back which can be used to attach the whole thing to handlebars. If this interests you, go to eBay, type in Garmin 60CSx and carefully look at the accessories that are listed.
  16. Thanks! Obviously I hadn't thought of that - I'll definitely do that with the next cache that I create.
  17. Would it be possible to add a 'preview' feature in the reporting/editing cache listing page so that possible errors in html code could be detected before the 'report new listing' button is clicked? eBay has such a feature whereas item descriptions can be previewed and corrected before the item is listed. Any other thoughts on the matter?
  18. I try to get out at least 2-3 times a week unless yard chores get in the way. Of course, rotten weather and nasty bugs can also put a damper on things.
  19. I've noticed some caches that were placed in or near cemetaries. What is the general thinking on this? Would a cemetary be considered an 'archeological site'?
