  1. The same thing happened to mine. It started off slowly. It only did it once in a while. At first I thought it was the batteries. It got really worse quickly. It almost became unuseable. I never dropped it. I sent an email to tech support, they gave me an RMA. I sent it in and had it back 5 days later. While they had it they replaced the screen, it had a big scratch on it. I didin't ask for a screen repair. It came back as good as new, same serial number and data intact. Overall a good experiance. This is my 3rd Garmin model and the only time I ever needed support. Email tech support was quick and no waiting on hold.

  2. I have 2 boys, 8 and 10. Who like to go once in a while. It's a great activity to get the whole family outside. My older son has his own gps and really enjoys the hunt. The youngest seems to get tired and bored easy. Once in a while they bring thier friends with us. I'm really trying to introduce them to my hobbies hikeing, climbing, and camping.

  3. I have a 60c. I upgraded for a 76s about a year ago. I never used the compass or altimeter. It works great, locks on quick, easy to use. If you don't need the extra features it's good to save the cash. The 60c form factor is nice, easy to hold. Although I like the 76s in the car better. 56 MB memory is more than enough to load all Connecticut topos and part of Mass.

I shipped it in. They had it back in my hands repaired, with all my data(Tracks, waypoints)

intact, in less than 5 days, no charge. While they had it they replaced the screen, had a big scratch. I didn't even mention the scratch in the warranty call. I was very happy with the service. I've always owned Garmin recievers and never had an issue before, it's nice to know the service is availible if needed.

  5. I've been taking my sons 8 and 10 for the past 2 years. The 10 year old has his own GPS and enjoys caching. The younger one gets board and is not as interested. I try to expose them to as much as possible.

  6. The maps in the TOPO usa are 1:100,000 while government 7.5 min topos are 1:24,000 and show a lot more detail. None of the map software products have this level of detail. I grew up using paper government maps and the software maps have always been a disappointment. Garmin offers 1:24,000 topos for national parks only. I'm not near any of the parks, so it would not be worth buying.

  7. I have the last version of Delorme Topo USA (4.0). I'm happy with it. I import the nearest 500 geocache waypoints from this site and use the maps to plan my caching. I find the maps to be accurate but not as good as a 7.5 min quad. Note these maps cannot be downloaded to GPS. You must buy the topo software provided by your GPS manufacturer. I have a Garmin unit and also have Garmin Mapsource topo usa for downloading to the GPS. For a Magellen unit you need Magellen Mapsend topo.

  8. Don't get discuraged there will always be that one cache that takes 2 or 3 visits to find. Out of the 50 I've found 3 or 4 needed multiple visits. Sometimes you just need to step back and try again.

  9. I have had a 76s for the past year. I found 50 caches with it. It is very easy to use, hold sat lock very well, and I can usually get a waas fix. I have a RAM mount for the car. It works very well in the car on the way to a cache. I don't user the compass of altimiter all that much. The large display works good with Mapsource Topo. Overall it's a very good unit, color and more memory will just make it better.

  10. So far the weather has kept me indoors. I've used it to do 2 maintanance trips to my own caches and in the car. It apears to have much better battery life than the 76s. One of the caches I maintained is under heavy tree cover. I had good reception with WAAS turned on and had an error estimate of 10 feet. In the car the average estimate veries between 10 and 20 feet most of the time. I have a heat condition that makes me cold all the time. I'm waiting on the warmer spring weather to venture out.

  11. I opted for the 60c, upgraded from a 76s. Found 50 caches with the 76s. It had both compass and altimeter, never used either. I always carry a manual compass. The 60c locks on fast, has easy to use menus, has more memory and loads maps very quickly with usb. So far I'm very happy with the 60c. I've seen some comments about glitches in the unit but have not experienced any myself. :D
