  1. Full day of caching with the Beta, found 6 caches. Accuracy seems very good. Compass working perfectly. Had to change batteries once. The batteries had been in the unit for months. I don't think that was related to the beta. Unit was on for over 6hrs, no issues. First time out with just the Oregon, usually bring 60csx just in case. Didn't even needthe 60. May be time to retire it.
  2. GPS will get you to within 20-30 feet
  3. Here is Garmin's reply to my support ticket on the WAAS issue: Thank you for contacting Garmin International. The Oregon is having a harder time loading the WAAS satellites in comparison to our other units. The new high sensitivity receiver we are using is causing this to take up to 45 minutes to connect. It is not the actual hardware itself but the software that communicates with the WAAS satellite and the receiver. This issue will be addressed in a firmware update. Once it is fixed you will see the paring of the WAAS satellites as quickly as the other units. We apologize for this inconvenience.
  4. I have 2 boys 12 and 14. They both have thier own accounts. They keep saying they will pass me in finds.
  5. I just picked up an Oregon 300. I had a 60 csx and a Colorado 300. The Oregon is very impressive, I had a hard time with the display brightness on the Colorado when in the sun. Dispite what people are saying the Oregon is very readable in the sun. You need to adjust the view angle but I find it easy to read than the Colorado. I have the entire Eastern Seaboard topo loaded, it loads quickly, is very easy to use. The paperless cacheing is great. The battery life seems better than the Colorado. I've only been out once so far but so far I'm impressed. I perfer the 300 models, I like to have the maps on the PC.
  6. I have both units and have been slowly trying to switch to the Colorado but it just isn't as accurate and I don't completly trust it yet. I've had the 60 cxs for a long time and it's dead on all the time. I'm hoping for a firmware update to correct the last issues.

    Help

Welcome 1) Install webupdater from the Garmin website, when you run it it will tell you if you need to update the unit 2) download EasyGPS from this link http://www.geocaching.com/waypoints/default.aspx it will allow you to download waypoints to and from the Unit. 3) If you install the driver and the computer sees the GPS you do not need the USB MASS Storage mode. Just pulg in the GPS turn it on and use EasyGPS to load and access waypoints. 4) To manually enter a waypoint just press the mark button. It will mark your current location, then edit that point to the location you want to goto.
  8. Hello You don't realy upload them to the Gallery. You upload them on your cache logs and they show up in the Gallery. Next time you log a cache after you submit the log you will see an upload image link in the upper right corner. Upload the image there and it will show up in your gallery.

Use the search function on the first page.(upper right corner) You can put in your zip code or your home coordinantes from your GPS. It will give you a list of caches going outward from the location you entered. Then just pick one from the list and double click on it.

Just go to the home page www.geocaching.com, on the upper right corner of the page enter your zip code. It will give you a list of nearby caches. Open one from the list. On the cache page near the bottom is a map. Iy you open this it will show you the caches on a map. you can move around the map an it will show you the caches as you scroll. When you see one your interested in, just click on it and the page will come up with a description. Start with caches with an easy rating. The difficulty is listed at the top of the page. Using the map will allow you to pick caches within easy distance of the road.

Hi and welcome. I'm not sure about your GPS, but I also started with major health issues. At 35 I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure from a virus and could barely walk across a parking lot. I had 4 doctors who had very negative opinions and one with a positive attitude. I stuck with the positive doc and slowly worked started to recuperate. Initially he did not want me to exert myself but as my heart started to get stronger he wanted me to exercise. At first I couldn't go further than 100 yards and I was exhausted getting back to the car. I used Geocaching to slowly build up my heart. That was 6 years ago, last month I was able to go backpacking with my son, we walked 23 miles in 2 days. It was the best I've felt in years. 6 months ago I was diagnosed with non-insulin dependent diabetes. I've still been caching. I've had a couple incidents of low blood sugar while caching. I'm just starting to get used to controlling my blood sugar while exercising. I always cache with carbs in my pack. My advise it to just start slow, research the caches you want to do, and find a partner to go with you. Geocaching can be very rewarding. Good luck!
  12. I have a Colorado 300, like the others I don't completely trust it yet. I always have my 60csx with me. I'm awaiting the final firmware fixes. Right now it's not much better than an expensive PDA.
  13. I'm was a newly diagnosed Diabetic controlled with pills. Out caching with my girlfriend. We were 3 caches into a state park I'd never been in before. Normally I carry something to eat, just in case. Of course this time I had nothing in my pack. We had been bushwhacking to hit these caches and my sugar bottomed out. I realized my girlfriend could not navigate us out, at this point I'm slurring my speech and staggering around. I managed to find the road on my 60csx and start a goto. Somehow I managed to get to the road but that was it, I just laid down and sent here for the car. At that point I wasn't even sure which way to the car. She managed to get the car and get me to Cumby's to get some sugar. Since this incident I've cut back the medication and increased my exercise and sugar has been under control. I always pack carbs in my pack now. This could have been pretty serious.
  14. This turtle and beaver were both near a cache.
  15. Ok I'm in added my laptop and joined the team....

  17. I've had the 300 for 2 months now. I've used it on 25 caches so far. The more I use it the more I like the paperless caching. I opted for the 300 because I like to use the maps on the computer. It's worked out fine so far, I load the whole East Coast. I have only cached in New England so far. most issues have been resolved with the latest firmware. The unit loads quickly and locks on. I get about 10hrs with 2600 mah nimh rechargeables. I have not had any isses with clock, lockups, or shut downs. I've updated the firmware 2 times. No issues with the updates. There are still a few quirks compared to my 60csx but its mostly operator expectations. The software on the 300 is so different from the 60csx, but it grows on you after a while. So far the unit has more than met my expectations.
  18. WAAS makes the the GPS readings more accurate when the reciever can see a WAAS sat. It also increase battery consumption. I always leave it tured on. Anything that makes the signal more accurate is ok. I don't allways get a WAAS correction, can't always see a WAAS sat, but the 60csx tells you with a D in the Sat bars on the sat screen.

  20. 2005 Hyundi "Civic" ..... I mean Accent. Don't mess with the Hyundi or you get the horns...
  21. I bought a Colorado 300 2 weeks ago. I have used it several times and find the hardware works fine. The software interface is significantly different from my old 60csx. I think a lot of the issues being reported are people tring to compare the unit with previous units. Hardware wise the unit locks on quickly and appears to be as accurate as the 60cxs. Boot up is slow but once booted it locks on quickly. I think a lot of the issues will be fixed with bios updates. I went out geocaching twice and the more I use the 300 the more I like it. I have half the US topo 2008 loaded and the nearest 500 caches. It's great having the cache discriptions in the GPS.
  22. .... ... As I remember the Colemen broke in half.
  23. By the way, I think the problem is loose battery springs. During the repair they replaced the springs and put small rubber pads under the battery contacts. When my unit would shut off some times the screen would just fade out and you would have to turn back on.
