  1. Check this: http://www.rechargeable-lithium-batteries.com/ Many of us use this and it stores a significant more charge than the OEM. Note that it probably voids warranty; however, I don't think that a search of the DeLorme forums will reveal any complaints or failures. I put one of these in my Delorme and I love it..... really long battery life!
  2. Yes, the FTF magazine is a good one! I have subscribed to that one and have enjoyed every issue.
  3. The fact that this guy is STILL taking money for subscriptions to a magazine that does not exist is just wrong. WTF?
  4. I use a DeLorme PN40 for geocaching and am very happy with it. I put a CabBat battery in it for longer battery life and highly recommend doing that. I use a 16G SD card and load all of my PQs onto that manually via computer (SD card appears like a flash drive on my Mac) and love that I can switch PQs in the field, or while traveling, right on the GPS device. DeLorme is great when it comes to maps. That is why I originally chose it. If I need to purchase another GPS, it will be a DeLorme again.
  5. I got ripped off by "Geocacher Magazine" too, sorry to say. When I started caching I was very excited to come across the web page and paid for a subscripton. That was over a year ago and I've since given up any hope of ever getting anything for my money. I too tried to leave comments on the Facebook page, only to see them disappear. At one point I emailed the publisher and he sent me an email back telling all about his health problems and assured me the mag would be coming out soon. Yeah, right. Never did. I am amazed that the website is still up and advertising for new subscriptions!
  6. I carry tweezers too, for extracting rolled up logs out of micros, etc.

  8. My DeLorme automatically enters the name of the cache.
  9. Thanks, BlueDeuce. I'll follow your advice.
  10. There is probably a simple answer for this but I have not yet found it, so I'm asking here...... I go out and check on my caches about every month to keep track of what is in them and make sure they are ready for others to enjoy. One of them has a particular travel bug listed in the inventory. I saw it in the cache a month ago, so know it was there. Yesterday when I checked on that cache, the bug was gone, but it's still listed in the cache inventory. I have looked at all of the logs from the last month and none mention taking it. Here's the question: Do I need to do anything to remove the bug from the cache inventory, or just let things take their own course? If it has not been logged out of the cache, will someone be able to drop it into another cache so it can continue to travel? Thanks in advance for your answers.
  11. I love my Delorme PN40! That model is being discontinued in favor of their newer model.... I will buy a Delorme again when the time comes. I use a 16G SD card and can load up multiple PQs and switch freely as I travel. All notes, logs, etc are there. With a CabBat battery in it, I can cache all day with one charge and charge batteries without taking them out of the unit. The "buttonology" is no problem once you are familiar with it. The only thing I wish for is a bit larger screen, but it's not a big problem.
  12. Welcome to the forums Agustin. You sound like a nice person and I understand you just fine. Enjoy the game any way you want to play, it's all good.
  13. I agree, the handheld will certainly navigate just fine in the car, and I do use that for short caching runs around the local area, but when going for a cache out of town, it just makes more sense to use the car GPS to get there, then switch to hand held on hiking mode. I don't like the diriving distraction of a hand held. I suppose having a dash mount for it would make a difference, but this method works for me.
  14. This looks very similar to the ones on the blog called RENZO'S CUSTOM CACHE. On that site you can download the PDF files for both the license and the cipher wheel.
  15. Thanks for taking the time to post the good advice on cleaning out the jar. Works just great. If you give the plastic a light sanding on the outside, you can do a nice cammo paint job on them too.
  16. I include a FTF prize of some sort out of respect for those who enjoy that part of the hunt. I know it is not necessary but choose to do so because it's fun. I also know that If I didn't put anything in, that would be OK too.
  17. I have left pathtags, $5 bill, and US $1 coins. I think it's nice to leave something for the FTF.
  18. Yes, that's correct. You can also use an adapter (usb to AC power) to plug it in to the wall or an adapter for car charging. I have not removed my battery since installing the CabBat. It's like charging a cell phone. There is one modification I made to my delorme, which turned out to be no big deal: Since the CabBat is slightly larger than regular batteries, you might want to remove the foam strips and shave down the plastic ribs inside the back cover of the battery compartment. This allows the back to retain the waterproof tight fit. There are directions for this on the CabBat site and it is very simple. Keep the foam strips in case you want to use regular batteries at some point in the future, although I can't imagine ever going back. Be sure to read all thei info on the site. The battery stays charged a LONG time. The battery indicator shows a full charge right up to the end and then drops of quickly, so get used to that. It really is an awesome improvement to have a rechargable L-ion battery! Again, I would recomment going to the site and just reading all of the information there. It's pretty thorough. http://www.rechargeable-lithium-batteries.com/ I have no interest in the company, I'm just a satisfied customer.
  19. I don't know if they ship overseas or not.... Here is another mention of it in these forums: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=261545&st=0&p=4499149&hl=delorme%20and%20cabbat&fromsearch=1entry4499149
  20. I charge the CabBat in my PN-40 rignt in the device, so I never have to remove the battery. Kind of like a cell phone. Since it is a L-ion battery it actually "likes" to be "topped off" and you can give it a little charge any time without totally draining it. IMHO it will make up for the price in many ways. I like it.
  21. After a recommendation from a fellow Delorme user I recently bought one of these to use with my Pn-40..... http://www.rechargeable-lithium-batteries.com/ So far, it's great! I think there is some discussion of this elsewhere on the forums also. It's a great improvement.

    GSAK and WHY?

I really think the features on this site are great and I don't find that I use anything else. I use a Delorme PN-40 with a 16G SD card in it. That will hold numerous PQs and I can switch them around as I wish right in the field or while traveling. It's all paperless and works great. Since the SD card comes up as an external memory on my Mac, it's easy to delete and reload PQ files with click and drag. Maybe I'm missing something but this system seems pretty straightforward and simple to me.
