Do you really expect everyone to stop using online tools so all the bandwidth is available to somehow be used to fight the COVID-19 virus?

A bit of a frenzied and exaggerated response, don't you think? Suggesting online gathering might affect bandwidth somehow equates to ALL ONLINE TOOLS.. good grief get a grip.

Somehow, I think an online gathering among a few geocachers is just a drop in the bandwidth bucket when it comes to all the people using online tools to stay connected during a "shelter in place" order.

It's like picking up a penny. They all add up.

Minnesota state parks are open. County parks where I have hides are open. If a city has closed its parks, I hope they post it somewhere at the entrance to the park. Otherwise, how do they expect peple to know?

    This.

And if the properly posted closed sign isn't going to stop geocachers do you (the collective) really think Groundspeak is going to have any effect?

Of course, you are. Just contact your geocaching friends to meet in Facebook live, Skype, Zoom or whatever you want and have a good time.

Only thing missing is the listing and the statistics point.

    Have fun!

And tying up bandwidth for those working remotely doing what could be an important job in the fight against the invisible enemy.

As I write this, at the end of my double shift from a US base in Europe that's mostly on lockdown, I am increasingly angered by the failure of people to take this situation seriously.

My travel has been banned to the United States, so that I don't bring anything back with me.  We were supposed to move back to the US in three months or so.  I don't know when we're coming back now.  We can't even plan our move yet.  Borders are being closed left and right.  Not only that, I'm restricted from going pretty much ANYWHERE.  I can go to work, and I can go home, and I can go buy essentials, and that's about it.  If things spread more, I'm gonna get locked down to my apartment.  We're jumping through hoops to take precautions.

All these restrictions are not to protect me.  I'm healthy.  It's not for the other Soldiers, either.  We're not the at risk population here.  It's to help slow the spread of this so the vulnerable population, namely seniors and the immune deficient, can be protected.  It's to protect the US population.  Yeah - it's for you guys

And it really, REALLY ticks me off that folks are acting like it's not going to get worse than it already is.

"Ha ha! Fake news!  The sky is falling!  You can't tell me what to do!  If you don't want to go to an event, don't go!  Is that your professional medical opinion?   Fresh air!  CITOs are good for you!"

Because that means that thousands of us over here might be doing all this for nothing.  Y'all are going to jack this up and spread it amongst yourselves anyway if you don't get your heads right.  Which will make all of what my entire community is giving up right now absolutely pointless.

There is a US public health emergency right now.  We are currently moving two Navy hospital ships to New York to help out.  We've already called out the National Guard in New York and Texas and elsewhere.  Things.  Are.  Not.  Normal.

Most events I've been to have a fair share of retired folks, and for the most part, they're pretty easy to spot.  You may not know whether some of your fellow cachers have a compromised immune system, but they might, or they might have someone at home who does.  I'm pretty dang sure no caching event is worth putting people in the hospital or inadvertently killing them off.

If "support the troops" means anything to y'all other than a bumper sticker you maybe used to have two or three cars ago, then please consider supporting those of us who are currently sucking it up for your benefit.  Here's how:

Get over yourself.  Get with the program.  Limit the spread.  Hunker down.  Tell your friends, too.

Yes, it's inconvenient.  No, I don't like it, either.  Maybe you couldn't tell from my tone, but I'm not super enthused about the situation.  But it's more fun than I bet it would be if someone found out they'd helped spread this further, or worse, contributed to someone's demise.

If we get it right, it'll seem like this was overblown.  Good.  I'd much rather it go that way than lose friends and family because it was too hard for y'all to cramp your style for a bit.

    THANK YOU.

  6. I am wondering if this is by design or a bug in the WhereYouGo player.

My zone events fire perfectly on all platforms, Android, Apple and emulator.. until you're on a smartphone and the WhereYouGo app is NOT in the foreground. When you put WhereYouGo to the background zone events do not fire. And I've confirmed that all of my timer event ARE firing in the background.

In WhereYouGo, the "Disable when Hidden" setting is UNCHECKED.

If your tests showed it is not possible, try another way.

AltText seemed to do the job. Odd that the Description property seems to me more important but not working.

I doubt the player will hit medias, anyway. You could try with a zone or (if you don't want to spoil the description if your zones are visible) an object.

Not helpful. You have no idea what events lead up to my function.

  9. Anyone know if it's possible to access media properties in code? I can't seem to get Description or alt-text to work while in code.

Media (image) description always returns an empty or nil value, even though it has a value in the Earwigo media properties. The media object itself does pass through as the image is shown in the MessageBox function call.

    function HitObstacle(points, media)
      Wherigo.MessageBox({Text='You hit obstacle ' .. media.Description .. '. You LOSE ' .. math.abs(points) .. ' points.', Media = media})
    end

When did the smiley face become punctuation?

The moment cellular phones and SMS texting were invented.

As usual in life there is not "the one answer". It would be quite good to know about the way you want to go caching, how often, what kind of caches.... For example:

    - If you want to find one cache while visiting a city once in a while just use your smartphone and nothing else. It is perfect.

    - Other way round: if you want to crawl through old bunkers do not use your smartphone. ;-)

    - Do you want to use "paperless" caching or not?

    [...]

Please use punctuation character when you answer. That makes it more easy understandable for us.

    Jochen

    Proper grammar helps too ;-)

Way to misguide noobie cachers with this complete platinum nonsense. Isn't this joke, what, 15 years old now?

Perhaps there isn't a single definitive answer for when a tool is used to [help] solve a puzzle.  I was talking specifically about some of the tools in geocaching toolbox where most of the solving is done by the tool.

You realize that there may actually be different levels of "solving", right?

I bring up hint, only in the context of the geocaching puzzle group, where "hints" are requested and the hint is basically, use this tool in he geocaching toolbox that will solve the puzzle.

Since you seem to be stuck on Morse code puzzles,  Yes I have solved a puzzle cache based on Morse code and ended up looking up code in a table to derive the coordinates.  However, it wasn't as simple as reading the code off the cache page and translating to numbers.  If it were that simple, then I would say that recognizing the code as morse code, then looking it up in a table is solving the puzzle.  However, in the one I did,  one had to figure out how to convert the text on the cache page listing to morse code, and even that morse code was even involved.   That was the solving part.  The rest was just transcription.

A very unnecessary off-topic rant. Why not just start your own thread.

This is exactly what is preventing me from making an underwater cache where I live. I love the river where I’m at, and I spend a lot of time on it in the summer, and have often fantasized placing a waterproof cache about 8-10 feet deep somewhere. But I always hesitate. The current is strong, the temperature is somewhat cold even in August (maybe as high as 67 degrees), and people do drown in the river from time to time.

People also drown in the bathtub.

    1. I thought we agreed that the thread was about encouragement, not obligation.

    2. It is no big effort to me to have a few emergency logs (the far ends of the paper when I cut my logs, they go there instead of trashing them) in my wallet and two or three petling caps in my pocket when going out caching (put aside when I put a PET bottle in the recycling bin). The trick in IMHO to do the small and easy things that helps. Saving these emergency logs is as easy as putting them in the trash. The petling caps almost so. I won't always be able to fix every cache that needs it, but I can handle the easy ones.

I encourage you to follow whatever philosophy that suits you. I won't judge you or jump to conclusions, and I for sure won't exaggerate a reaction to any of your posts. But for me and for those that think the same way as me, I won't be guilt-ed into maintaining other peoples caches when I have my own to worry about. But one thing is for sure (not directed at you), I will not be bullied into when or when not use NM or NA. I am pretty sure I have a good handle on when to "use those weapons that I have in my arsenal". :-)

As to your "weapon", I have a small issue with you calling it that.  All it is is a tool that we can use to notify COs (and then reviewers if it's ignored) that their cache needs tending to.  "Weaponizing" it is part of the problem of why COs tend to be affronted by someone filing a NM log, IMO.  It's a tool that many opt not to use, even though they should and that's part of the problem.

Easily triggered? It was just a phrase. Please over analyze someone else's posts.
