  1. Another place to shop for walking sticks is at eBay under a "Fly Fishing" search. Fly fishermen use them to wade streams with fast current and/or slippery rocks.
  2. I agree, writing a lot won't help anyone who lacks BASIC spelling skills. Reading may help if the individual can read (usually, if you can't spell you can't read either). I think the post in question was so poorly written that it has to be a joke. If it was, then it's an insult to all the rest of us who graduated the 3rd grade. If not, this individual's spelling teacher (s) should be strung up by the gonads. As far as buying a GPS for $5.00....sounds to me like the teacher and student have been smoking something funny.
  3. Has anyone using a GPS/Pocket PC combo tried either of these two UPDATED programs? GPS Pad V1.15 ($14.95) GPS Tuner V4.0 ($25/35.00)
  4. Wife = 69 Me = 68 I'd be interested in seeing the average when survey is complete.
  5. Unless you have lots of cash don't buy your maps from Magellan. Place a WTB ad in this forum (GPS Garage Sale) or eBay. You can get used software a lot cheaper.....at least I did.
  6. At $199.00 Destinator is definately beyond my budget.
  7. Scarng, As you suggested, I looked into Mapopolis for maps for my Pocket PC. Below is my email to Mapopolis and their reply: >Jamesbe2759 to Mapopolis: Your web site states: "Platinum maps do not support GPS devices. > Door-to-door driving directions are generated but no automatic visual or > spoken prompts are generated." > > I am interested in buying a single map (GPS Supported) of the Salt Lake City, > Utah area for my Pocket PC. There are two maps available, the platinum map > (not GPS supported) and the demo map (GPS supported). Is there a Navigator > Map available for Pocket PC that is GPS supported? > > Thanks, > > James > jamesbe2759 Mapopolis Reply: Hi, James, Sorry, but the Navigator maps are our only GPS-enabled maps, and these are only available in our $99.95 Navigator MapPack. Be careful - the Platinum maps do not support GPS. Thanks, Lamar @ Mapopolis Support My problem is that their map packages are much more expensive than MS Streets & Trip or Delorme's Street Atlas. I agree that Mapopolis maps are more up to date. At any rate, Mapopolis don't offer single maps that are GPS supported. Thanks for your help anyway. Jim
  8. Thanks scarng, I'll check it out. I appreciate the info.
  9. Hi, I need to buy new/used 2004/2005 Pocket PC map software. I am interested in Microsoft's Streets & Trips with Pocket Streets or Delorme Street Atlas Handheld Ed. Thanks
  10. Excellent review & pictures Jamie. You've done such a good job that I need to go buy the 500. My wife will have a sh_t hemorrage.
  11. I'm new to geocaching and finally bought a GPS that I thought was adaquate for the task (Magellan Meridian Gold). So far I'm really happy with this unit as it has most of the functions needed already built in. I was wondering what advantage I would gain by buying a cable and mapping software for interfacing my Hewlett Packard Ipaq pocket computer with my Meridian Gold. I see a lot of people here doing this even though most GPS units are self contained.
  12. Need to buy new/used auto (12 V) power cable and/or bicycle mounting bracket for Magellan Meridian series GPS. Thanks
  13. Thanks for your offer but when I didn't get an answer right away I went to eBay and bought the CD & case. I still need a power supply however. Thanks
  14. You correct this problem the same way as the folks do in the previous thread: "Protection From Wildlife?"
  15. Any questions as to what I carry for protection?
  16. You asked for opinions on the Cobra 1000 ONLY? Well you won't get many opinions then because they probably only sold 5 - 10 units total. Customer feedback on the 1000, 500, and 100 is so BAD they are giving them away just to be rid of them. I bought the 100 as my first GPS and had to take it back to Circuit City three (3) times and still never got one that would work. Finally had to buy a Garmin at twice the price (but it's 4X the better unit). YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
  17. This Garmin etrex Legend is brand new...never used outside my home. Opened package to verify operating condition only. It comes in the original package with operators manual, PC data cable, wrist strap, 12 volt adapter cable, dashboard mounting bracket. See eBay #5765188763 After purchase of this unit at Circuit City on 02/26/05 I decided to buy the Magellan Meridian Gold because of the SD card capability. I paid $160.09 plus $15.00 for the dash bracket (never used) and $12.00 for the 12 volt cable (never used). I'll refund $10 to a Groundspeak member. $140.00 (PayPal, money order, cashier check). No personal checks please.
  18. Oh, BTW, I bought my NEW Magellan Meridian Gold for $159.95 on eBay. Not that much more $ than the Legend but a lot better unit.
  19. I've only had my Gold for a couple of days without extended time in the sun (other than initialization) and haven't seen this problem yet. Thanks for the heads-up though. I'll be looking for the problem.
  20. I would not be comfortable predicting what the poster would and would not be happy with. BTW, this thread is full of people who appear to be happy with older Palm hardware. Whatever turns your crank. Do you buy second-hand clothes too? (they are cheap).
  21. Speaking of "cheap" memory. I just bought a 32 mb SD card (new) for $4.99 priority shipping INCLUDED. ( Surpluscomputers.com ) I will be using this card in my NEW Magellan Gold that I bought to replace my Garmin Legend. The Gold is 100X better unit.
  22. I have to rant now. Why is it that when people want something inexpensive/that they can afford, most people are helpful but then some person has to come along and convince somebody that the most expensive thing is the best. My mother's trying to get a home loan, and one bank was very helpful to tell her she can get $100k and stay in the same price range as she's paying now for rent. Another person decided to tell her she could get $150k - an increase of over $300 for her monthly payment. Some people just don't listen to what's being said to them. End Rant To answer somebody else's question, GPSrs don't use color screens with rare exception, and none of us have problems reading any of those, so I can't imagine a PDA being any different. So here's my PDA question. Those of you that have cached paperless without a PDA and paperless with a PDA, how many increased benefits are there really to having a PDA? Hey Fly, you ever hear the term "you get what you pay for"? In this case CHEAP ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER. Evidently you don't know anything about Pocket PC's otherwise you would know that the old, cheap Palms aren't worth a dadgum. Two weeks after buying a cheap one he will be looking for another, better, one and no way to get rid of the old one ($50 paper weight). BTW, $300 isn't expensive for a good Pocket PC. I wonder what he paid for his GPS. If you want to go inexpensive.....go buy a yellow pencil and a notebook. BTW, nobody gives a dadgum about your mother's home loan. Why bring it up?
  23. The PDA's this guy at eBay is selling are all Palm units and OLDER models with less memory/functions than today's models. Even though they are cheaper you wouldn't be happy with it. I'd suggest you invest in an Ipaq 2200 series (approx. $300). They have all the bells & whistles at less cost than the high end units. This way you can use it for other things besides geocaching. I found that my 2210 can do almost everthing my laptop can.
  24. I frequent a few other forums (not geocaching related) and they are ALL the same. You always have a few members who like to run their mouths without the brain being engaged. They also like to turn ANY issue into a piss'n contest. The best way to handle people like this is to ignore them...they go away after awile.
  25. Hi, For what it's worth department... I had the same problem with my laptop not recognizing (communicating) with my Garmin Legend. After a few hours of searching for an answer in my Windows XP I found the problem. The serial port on my laptop was designated as being used for another piece of hardware. After I deleted this usage designation I was in business and everything works OK. Most newer computers have more than one serial/USB port so it isn't hard to find one free.
