  1. i like the app that isn't supposed to be mentioned. the official geocaching app seems to be the exact same except the price ($10) if you want to purchase apps on your evo, then just create a google account and if you already have a gmail account you can use that. you can put your own info in to purchase and your employer will not be charged for it, it will go to your credit card instead.
  2. you need to select "log your visit" in the upper right hand corner and where it asks for what type of log just selected "write note" then whatever you are wanting to say in the comments box.
  3. when i had my pre i used the geocaching for webOS app as from what i could tell it was the only one available.
  4. i'm gonna go ahead and say the explorist also. load up as many caches as you want and go out and find them. the paperless makes it much nicer. easy to update and upload field notes when you get back home.
  5. That's incorrect. The Pre has an actual A-GPS chip. Triangulation alone can't handle the turn-by-turn navigation that the Pre is capable of. If you have Verizon, you used to have to have their GPS app running in the background in order to for other apps to access the GPS data. That can now be bypassed. And if you don't have Verizon, good for you. technically every cell phone has an aGPS chip to meet the requirements for the e-911 service which does use triangulation to find where you are. the Pre does use triangulation for the aGPS which is what helps it find you faster while trying to lock on to a very small number of satellites (2-3) and also if you are in a building where a normal GPS satellite won't be able to find you. is it super accuate using that method, no. the aGPS is also what connects to the towers to relay the map info for you since it is saved server-side and not on the phone itself. triangulation can be used for turn by turn with sprint's telenav, it did it with the samsung A900. it wasn't very accurate but it was within 35 or so feet depending on how many towers it was using to find you.
  6. i've used the Palm Pre and the HTC Evo for geocaching and would have to say to go with an Android based phone for caching. The apps on the Android are much better than the one app the Pre has. the gps in the Pre uses triangulation where as the Evo uses both triangulation along with a true gps reciever making it more accurate. The apps for the Android have a lot more to offer than the one on the Pre. My girlfriend will break out her Pre while we are hunting from time to time along side my Evo and she prefers the Evo over the Pre also. The much larger screen on the Evo helps out a lot also.
  7. figured i would chime in with what i bought since it stays within the $400 budget. originally i bought a garmin nuvi 255wt for travel. found out about geocaching and used it for awhile. it's not the best for geocaching but worked. only major downside is that you need to change it to off-road mode when you get out of the car and start searching for the cache. this was on-sale at best buy when i got it for $110. over the weekend i bought a hand-held. it's the magellan explorist gc. since i don't go hiking or needing it to find trails and it would be used solely for geocaching, it was a good choice for me. holds more geocaches than i will probably ever be able to find (10,000). these can be had for $200. i used both of these at the same time this weekend which seemed to work out great. you can use GSAK to load up a PQ into the nuvi for paperless caching with it and also have the same PQ loaded into the explorist gc. now when i want to go, i load up the cache in each gps and use the nuvi to get there with the car and then the explorist gc when we get out of the car. this setup would meet your needs for in-car and also have a nice hand-held that you wouldn't have to worry about rain or dropping it like you do with an in-car only unit like the nuvi.
  8. i used my evo a couple of times this week so far for geocaching and every time it has gotten me within 5 or so feet.
