  1. As you wish. Done! Goodbye geocaching, Groundspeak and the people they support and prefer as customers In comparison to the last poster your contribution to the game certainly tips the scales. Stand your ground.
  2. It annoyed me at first too, cards squeezed into caches barely able to contain log alone. The other bug bear was you can't contact the owner without signing up. The third aspect is there is no correlation should a geocache owner disable or archive their cache it still shows on the rivals site.
  3. Disagree totally on that point! Yes, Groundspeak and Garmin may have given up on it but it's still going strong with the phone based players and web-based development tools. We've =Wherigo+Cache&hidden_fromyyyy=&hidden_frommm=&hidden_fromdd=&hidden_toyyyy=&hidden_tomm=&hidden_todd=&bml_owner=&bml_guid=&submit=Filter&submitbutton=Filter"]set a few and =Wherigo+Cache&fromyyyy=&frommm=&fromdd=&toyyyy=&tomm=&todd=&submit=Filter&submitbutton=Filter"]found a few and the range of ideas for game play never ceases to amaze me! Mark Rather defeats the object of it being hosted on the geocaching site if it can't be accomplished using our prime seeking device.
  4. I do a lot of tours and I'm just back in the door from a trip basically from Berkshire to Yorkshire. I went to seek LQ Cheshire and did a circuit on the Sandstone trail too. Really enjoyed the short time I was there and I'm sure you wouldn't have to travel far to get lots more. For those who don't wild camp like me there is a nice big hotel on the hillside. Terrain is a little challenging but great fun.
  5. I thought that caches had to be placed for the long run? And not a temporary ones that are likely to be destroyed? Or am i wrong? I believe they will be placed to remain the guideline 6 months in situ or greater. What i'm not so convinced about is that they will be of the quality this thread is intimating we desire or that we need such placements being made, merely to effect ease of achieving a challenge.
  6. I have a feeling geocaching management are not on our side. The recent announcement that there are to be souvenirs for each day cached in August has spawned direct requests and social media talk of groups setting caches in patches just so seekers do not have to travel great distances to seek caches on those 31 days. I can not foresee all those new placements meeting the standards we desire. My own placements; Many are infrequently found often passing a year between finds but most seekers enjoy the experience when they make the effort. Likewise I enjoy those logs much more than receiving 100's of less meaningful ones.
  7. Always carry a decent torch or more than one. Even on the sunniest day it will help with those dubious holes and might reveal hides within ivy too. Your inspector gadget arms might have to be 20ft for one of my caches.
  8. Contact the person and ask that they deposit in a cache as is the intended purpose of a traveller.
  9. Try looking at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/gi/nationalgrid/nationalgrid.pdf for an explanation of British Grid 5 digit Eastings and Northings will give you 1 metre accuracy.
  10. Yes do it, it can be a large then, not a nano. Looking forward to what you fill it with.
  11. I get notifications from the Groundspeak Forums but rarely contribute these days. Liked a local forum but that has all but dried up now. Reluctantly moved to the social face forum of which some content is ok but there is a great deal of dross there too.
  12. Kirsten, Thanks for the greater insight into your trip it helps us tailor suggestions more. By all means do the Devils Dyke series if you can but for that series allow at least half a day, be tired from walking the undulations. You should be fine with access and parking the van there. I'll look through your other towns when time allows. It would be at the end of your trip but unusually for me I enjoyed a part day at Dover. Unusual as I don't like pay parking and throngs of people. I did enjoy the earth cache and another there but that is a bit strenuous as it's a zigzag steep stepped cliff descent. Tip is to park in the higher car parks with the motorhome.
  13. Hi Kirsten, that looks like a big itinerary, I often travel in a moderate size van. Major pit falls I find is not achieving as much as you expect. I'll likely come up with some suggestions but fist might I ask about the trip. Is the trip predominantly sight seeing or geocaching. Are night stops prebooked. Will the cache itinerary be set before outset or can you select/route as you travel. How large is the motorhome. Hope it is a great trip for you but certainly parking and narrow roads are something to consider with a larger vehicle.
  14. A bookmark of a few I've enjoyed around Cambridge. http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=e1348147-82fe-46fe-9a45-1c575132187e Wandlebury would keep you occupied for a fair part of the day. Cambridge dates is urban by I enjoyed that as an evening walk. The sewer croc is highly recommended if you pass that way. My main reason for visiting Cambridge was because of World Cache (United Kingdom) but you would need more than one visit to complete that one. I'll leave the bookmark open for a week or so, hope you have a good trip what ever caches you decide to attempt.
  15. Most of the blue plaque or even green plaque caches I have attempted have been multi caches or unknowns and have been set for their individuality. If folk haven't got off their backsides to do one of these caches, the green plaque one alluded to will take minimum half a day then they have missed out on a good caching experience. The setters of these caches generally make a great deal of effort in setting them up. I would only see popularising the theme as a detriment to the individuality of what has been created thus far.
  16. If it is a good cache it will get visits. I've a cache that requires a 6+ mile walk to find it. I've similarly walked such a distance for a single cache. Some placed out on the moors might require a 12mile or greater walk. If you are worried about setting at a distance from home I there is a guideline you can check but generally the reviewers can identify responsible setters who will maintain their caches and allow distant ones. I've some more than 50 miles from home.
  17. There are various sites but if it's for a single value why not just change the settings on your GPSr.
  18. I don't always agree with Deci but think this statement was well set out and likely the correct view. If only we were all responsible Cache Owners. After visiting a cache with quite a few DNF's and I added one too. My major concern though was a log before mine saying a searcher had gone track side of a major railway line. My NA log http://coord.info/GL9MP3PA was soon counteracted by the CO and the cache disabled. The cache is still disabled 5 weeks on. How long does it take to check the presence of the original cache and convey that on the page or take the appropriate action? So points to consider are; Even if a cache is realistically place at publication will it remain so. Will it move by natural migration (I know some of mine do). Will the CO ensure it is always as first placed? Will if it does go missing increse the risk factor? Can we rule out the actions of irresponsible cachers. Imagine the publicity if that cacher on the railway line had caused services to be suspended. I don't expect to be around in 2300 but I do desire to enjoy caching as long as I can but all I see since beginning in 2005 is a decine in standards. Lets work together and get our caches up to scratch, if you have one disabled or needing attention tomorrow is the day to fix it.
  19. I liked; http://coord.info/GC20KZD it's a touch hilly though. http://coord.info/GC1V1Z3 not sure if it is a true trail but it will keep you busy. Haven't checked they are within the scope of your area my geography is not good.
  20. Put the geocaching admin page on a tab of your browser http://www.geocachingadmin.com/ It will give you access to many features.
  21. Many thanks for the explanation and maths Alan, you have such a greater understanding of these things than myself. Certainly not complaining about the API I just balance the way I use it considering my data allowance constraints.
  22. Yes you can but by the cringe, it doesn't 'arf take a long time to generate and GSAK is notoriously resource hungry. My computer slows down massively whilst GSAK is doing it's thing The API is useful but as Pharisee says it takes a while and as phone lines are not good to my residence I either use Satellite or mobile dongle with restricted data levels. So if I'm likely to refresh the same caches in bulk regularly, I go; Filter the ones I want in GSAK Create a bookmark (remember reduce filter to 1000 caches). Create a PQ from the bookmark. Download the PQ which is zipped and uses much less data allowance. If you retain the bookmark a quick scan will indicate unavailable ones. Grease monkey script allows you to view 1000 caches per page and bulk delete etc.
