  1. I'm going to go to the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum in a few weeks and then drive slowly north towards Michigan. I'll be near Dayton, then may go to Toledo, probably Fort Wayne, then over to the Chicago area. What are some of the better caches in these areas? I'm willing to drive out of my way for some cool caches. Any suggestions?
  2. I get notification of new caches published, and caches that are archived. Is that the same as retracted listing? Why would you publish someone's cache and then retract it 5 mins later? Can't you just deny the cache and no one would ever be the wiser that the cache was ever in existence? But I still would be okay with that scenario, how often does the important info change on a cache page after it has been published? I would guess not very often.
  3. How new do I need? If I'm out, and my phone/GPSr that will open a gpx file gets an email that says a new cache has just been published in my area, why should I bog down more Groundspeak resources by then having to go to the website to confirm what I could already have in the email?
  4. Double ditto here. GPSfiledepot works great with the 60csx
  5. I would love to see a little more info in my email notifications. Right now all we get is when a new cache is published is distance from our home coordinates, the name of the cache, and the name of the reviewer who reviewed it. I would like at least to see who's cache it is. But a gpx file for premium members would be awesome.
  6. That's what I call them also "Civilians", but I like Others as well.
  7. Sounds pretty neat to me. I have a couple of puzzles that use phones. There are a couple of versions of Morse Code too. I did a puzzle one time that used some old version that was used by the railways in America and it took a while to figure out, even after you knew it was Morse Code, because the style was archaic.
  8. I should have saw it, but I missed it at first. My log.
  9. That's too funny! The word is out. I saw those coins you mentioned, they aren't the most beautiful coin I've seen, but the climbing one almost looks like a person belly crawling through a drain (not sewer, you won't catch me crawling through a sewer!) We may have to come up with a different idea. If someone sees a coin and says to them selves, "That looks like something a C.H.U.D. would want." let me know. Thanks
  10. I'm looking for a coin/s to be a First to Find prize in a 5 star difficulty / 5 star terrain multi-cache. Is there a coin out there that commemorates doing a 5 star cache, and if so, where can I buy a couple.
  11. I've found hundreds of caches with my Windows Mobile phone using the Geocaching app GCZII. A friend of mine uses Cachebox on his Mio and likes it. The only reason I have a stand alone GPS receiver is in case I want to cache in the rain or in wet conditions.
  12. Sadly that's happening around here. For the last couple of years someone has been stealing the ammo cans that are easily gotten to. The thief dumps the cache contents on the ground and takes the can. It has come to the point to where some of the local hiders don't list in their cache description what type of container it is, or say their ammo can is tupperware. I think it's the army surplus store people myself. What better racket. Sell me an ammo can for 4 dollars, steal it, and then sell it again to someone for 5 dollars, because there is a shortage and the price has gone up.
  13. After a couple forays into the tunnels and a few discussions, the cache under Bloomington is definitely happening. If you are wanting in on the planning and hiding of this cache, let myself, Mouse! Geomafiosa, Mickey4Jes, or MonsterCatAmbush know and we will include you in the email loop, or as I like to call it The Clown Council. To keep from ruining the find for everyone, we are not going to discuss details of the cache in these public forums. djhobby
  14. I would be very curious to see the amount of water coming out of the south side now. We've had a constant drizzle for 3 days now.
  15. Yeah, I didn't think we would be able to get special dispensation. TMR sticks to the .1 guideline quite firmly. Which is fine, those guidelines are in place for a reason. I did some very rough calculations on this, using MCA's pdf of the tunnel. I put marks where there are caches, and drew a 528' circle around those caches. This leaves very little room for a physical cache anywhere along the whole route. From behind the Von Lee to 3rd street is the longest stretch that doesn't fall with 528' of another cache. There is a very short window of opportunity behind the fire station section, and a short section under Washington Street, just south of The Rise/Middleway House. That's it, probably only 300' of the whole .75 mile long tunnel is available for a physical cache. But as PoppaHoppy did with the awesome Bucket o' Fun cache, a clue/stage for a multi-cache could be hidden anywhere.
  16. Ah man, you left out the best part. Galac-a-Bric's comment about evil clowns is classic. Anyway... It sounds like a few of us want to scout out the area. Mouse! has already done so recently, maybe he can recommend the best place to enter, and what conditions we are going to encounter, and what gear is needed. Should we wait until the current construction project is over? Or is it not relevant to where we want to hide a cache/s. I think everyone wants to err on the side of caution here, and we all appreciate everyone's concern. No one should get hurt while playing our game. That being said, not all caches are recommended for all of us, thus the terrain/difficulty rating. If a few of us find that with adequate precautions, the correct equipment, and we give the finder all of the proper warnings, this cache should be feasible. Also provided that Groundspeak and the City of Bloomington hurdles are properly negotiated. One thing to consider here that has been nagging at me, because I've come against this hurdle ABOVE ground in this area, is the .10 of a mile guideline for cache saturation. While we might find a great spot below ground, there might be a cache too close above ground. All that being said, I'm ready to explore the area for a hide.
  17. Now there's a great idea. Now if someone would just make the script. I use a few different scripts already on Geocaching.com to show all the logs on a page, decrypt the ROT 13, and a few other things, etc...
  18. That's funny. I would be interested in seeing what some of my friends are doing in my facebook feed. I would rather have the opportunity to ignore their caching logs, than ignore their Mafia Wars request, or poll request, or Farmville request. To me this is the same sort of thing I requested a few days ago. The option to follow a cacher, or a cache, or a trackable item with an RSS feed.
  19. It could also be a cache listed on another site such as Terracahe.com, but it's probably like someone else said previously, someone looked for the ammo can, assumed it was gone, and "helped" the cache owner out by putting out their own.
  20. Yes GCz II is awesome. I've been using it exclusively for a few months now. I uninstalled cachemate, and my Garmin is collecting dust. Tom is awesome.
  21. Yes thanks again to the Groundspeak gurus for bringing this back!
  22. Sounds like a great idea to me. Groundspeak should get with Web 2.0. If you don't want to see something in Facebook, usually there is an ignore this option so you don't have to see things in your stream you don't want. This forum should have the same option so you don't have to see all of the negative flames that are irrelevant to the original posters question.
  23. How about implementing a RSS feed of a particular cache, or of a cacher. Right now, you can put a cache on a watch list, or use instant notification, but you can't do this with a cacher. It would be nice get updates of your friends activities.
  24. To me it looks like the cache the Original Poster was referring to was to commemorate someone's birthday, and appropriately the person that it was placed for was the First To Find. I have seen, and participated in a few caches like this, and the cache page usually mentions this, and I have seen the Cache Owner mention congratulations to both FTF, the one it was hidden for, and the one who found it after the event. But what this question actually comes down to is this: Is geocaching a competition? I don't think so, and I don't it should be, but..... I have left my house on a dark and stormy night at midnight to beat my fellow local FTF hounds to claim first, but it's all in good fun for the sole purpose to rib my caching buddies. I was talking to a non cacher yesterday about geocaching, and he said something interesting, "where are the geocaching championships held?" This bothered me a little because to me it's a game, but not a scoreable game. We all have milestones we would like to reach, but not at other cacher's expense. There isn't a defense in caching.
