  1. I'm glad I opened this up, I sent out a couple bills 20 years ago and would be interested in where they've traveled, probably better than my trackables. I sent a request to see if they could recover my account but I'm not going to hold my breath.
  2. You are looking at the left sidebar on the new map? If this is just the old button that was included in this new this release is off to a bad start. Edit: Disregard all above, the new map is only seen by select members, crash test dummies? When you click a map icon a sidebar opens on the left and send to Garmin is listed. I tried the link and it tries to pull up Garmin Express but I don't have it installed. Update: I installed Garmin Express and it works fine with the GPS set to serial, now everyone upset a week ago will be upset again when they have to change their settings back to serial.
  3. Not that I use it myself but I'm glad see the "send to Garmin" feature is back, hopefully someone that uses that method will report back. I've noticed my hides have a star on the cache list on the left but the map icon shows the usual green unfound icon.
  4. You may want to check the new map page, "send to Garmin" is on the left side towards the top. I don't use that method so I can't say if it works or not. Edit to add: you have to click a map icon first.
  5. Maybe the reviewer should see the email before it's sent to the CO? I hid a 3/2.5 in July where I averaged the coordinates at least twice a day over a six day period and the reviewer notes reflected that. Between the publish date of 7/17 and 7/28 it received three DNF, two in one day by a pair of cachers traveling together. On 8/10 I received the email from HQ, checked the cache, and logged an OM on 8/11. This is the discouraging part of the whole process, the day after I received the email I received notification for a cache on my watchlist where the cacher logged a find on their throwdown. I attempted this cache back in January and found only a tupperware container lid with a geocache sticker on it. I logged a DNF, a NM, and also sent a message to the CO. Since then the cache has had four more DNF and three more NM logs, at no time did the CO or reviewer post a note about the cache condition. To top it off on 9/6 the charter member CO logged a bogus OM thanking the previous cacher for the throwdown and stating "I’ll be sure to check the area and do a cleanup". It left me wondering why I even try.
  6. Exactly. GSAK will do this as long as you choose the right settings, but looking through the settings for these old serial units I was reminded of setting up my first receiver, a Lowrance Eagle, back in the 90s. I had other serial devices attached and ended up with the receiver on COMM 7 and having to change interrupts, this was a little more complicated than figuring out how to move a downloaded file to another location. If I'm not mistaken the game evolved from satellite and computer technology and technology isn't static. Like someone else hinted earlier in another thread, maybe it's time to retire the dinosaur receivers and move up to something a little more plug and play.
  7. I just replied to that thread, GSAK supports a bunch of old Garmin GPS models like Astro and Geko. It also has a setting for generic serial data. It also supports Delorme, Lowrance, and Magellan. My question in that thread was, if you are going to use GSAK why bother to download the GPX from GC.com in the first place?
  8. You are clicking the link to your lists page on the left side of your dashboard aren't you? The list page is a little deeper than the dashboard. https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=7&pgid=283
  9. Plug the GPS into the Mac and it should mount as a drive, maybe two drives. My Etrex mounts one drive, my Montana mounts a one drive for the GPS and one for the SD card. If a drive doesn't mount unplug the GPS and go into GPS system settings. The interface selected should be USB mode, or Garmin spanner depending on GPS model. Once the GPS mounts as a drive open it and you will see two folders, Documents and Garmin. Open the Garmin folder and drag the GPX files to the GPX folder. You will have to unzip the PQ before moving the GPX files into the GPX folder. Look at icezebra11's post below, it's been quite a while since I've used a PQ and forgot about this.
  10. From the way you worded your question and the equipment in your profile picture I suspected you may have seen a GPS receiver before Happy caching!
  11. The GPX file is never modified by the GPS, it's only purpose is to provide cache information to the GPS. Once you find (or DNF) a cache that information is written to a file named geocache_visits.txt which can be used to send back to Groundspeak, https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=138&pgid=548. Since I use third party software to log my caches I've never used this so hopefully someone with experience will step in. You can always go to the cache page and choose the green "log geocache" button on the right side of the page to log your caches, this is probably the most common method used by GPS users.
  12. The downloaded gpx will be named with the cache code, once it's on the GPS it will be named according to your GPS settings either, code or title.
  13. I placed a regular cache with this in mind, packed it with "adult" items such as a pair of pocket binos, flashlights, small first aid kits, and other useful items. I checked this after about a dozen finds and everything the cache started with had been replaced with plastic toys and rubber snakes, lesson learned.
  14. I wasn't referring to members just joining with one or two posts in this topic and apologize if it was worded this way, this was a surprise to them and I've been working with one member by messenging to get them back to caching. This subject has been discussed many times over the last year, some people took what was given them and moved on, others didn't. Do a search for this problem outside of this topic and the remedy is there, I just don't think this is the right topic to be discussing the details. The age of the GPS could come into play, but if your GPS uses a USB cable chances are pretty good you can move a gpx file to your GPS and make it work, no different than moving a downloaded picture to a thumb drive. Take a deep breath, forget about quitting the game, and approach this with an open mind. I would walk anyone through the process but a forum is not the ideal place for a one-on-one detailed discussion, plus I do have other things to accomplish today.
  15. To add to what kunarion said, it is not Groundspeak that stopped supporting the plugins it is the web browser companies. Some people have found ways to get around this but in doing so have potentially left themselves exposed to hackers. The solution to this has been explained hundreds of times in the last year alone in different sections of this forum but not many seem to listen.
  16. In about three weeks I'll be caching in New Mexico and after a quick search I've found several bonus caches along my route between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. With what you've given above it looks like I can leave the house with a gpx file of all the individual caches in the series, much appreciated!
  17. Yet another secret search method revealed by the Zen Master, vielen dank!
  18. Since you mentioned the macro I'm assuming you are using GSAK. I'm using the TrackableOwnedAPI macro to download all my owned trackable logs but in your case it would still not match logs with found caches without a lot of work. Ask this question in the GSAK forums, there could be a process in place already and if not, someone willing to write a macro for this specific task.
  19. If you don't mind could you provide the information to the "safe have laws" so I don't have to look it up?
  20. I just messed up the reply so I deleted it. If the person that posted decides it is, yes.
  21. If they are frantic about anything it's about deciding where the new API is focused, smartphone or GPSr. I suspect FP are not even on the radar.
  22. I have looked this area over twice in the past and could not come up with a location that would be muggle-proof unless it was a micro and I don't want to do that, this is at a roadside park and is used for rock climbing quite often. The 15,000 square miles in the three counties I'm placing caches basically has no public land so I have to be creative to avoid hiding a micro. I have an idea in mind and will run it past my reviewer to get his opinion but I thank you both for the ideas.
  23. Thanks! As a virtual wasn't possible I didn't consider any other type, but now that you brought that up I could use this as a virtual stage for a puzzle cache.
  24. I'm working to publish an earthcache that has unique geological features but also has historical significance, in fact a historical marker has been placed on the side of one of the boulders. In addition to questions about the geology would I be allowed to ask one question of the historical significance? I'm out to place some caches today so it may be a while before I can reply.
  25. I suspected this a few weeks ago when I did a bulk publish from GSAK. I didn't think much about it at the time but paid attention to my FP count after my last road trip. Yesterday I did another bulk publish of 47 finds, my FP count before publishing was 51. After publishing these finds and giving three favorite points my FP count is 48, something is obviously broken.
