  1. If they are doing logging or other operations during a weekday you'll often find the gates open. I have never seen them open during the weekend, though. Also, I once drove through one of the open gates and got scolded by a very surly truck driver. As a result, I'm of the impression that you are not allowed to drive in even when they are open. But I'll be wearing my new Groundspeak Orange Vest and have my clipboard in hand! Sure, tell them you're from the spotted owl inspection board. They love that stuff!
  2. A few things to consider before denying hunters their chosen sport on Sundays for what I suspect started out as a religious reason, which would be unconstitutional due to seperation of church and state. 1. Hunters pay a lot of money to participate in what is a very short season for most, and the money they pay in the form of tags and liscenses primarily goes to conservation of wildlife in your area. This is outside of the normal taxes that everyone pays, along with expenses such as camping gear, rifles, ammunition, etc. How much do you pay to be in the woods? 2. You can cache all year round, and can select which areas to go to according to your preferences, not what the rulebooks tell you when and where you can. Hunters (the legal ones)have to follow very specific rules that you are not subject to. 3. How would you feel if the new rules stated that due to hunting season you are no longer allowed to go into the woods to geocache from Sep. to Dec.? Banning hunting on Sundays so that non hunters can go into the woods without having to hear rifle shots is essentialy the same thing. Sounds a bit hypocritical to me. Yes, there are bad hunters out there that make "sound shots", but you have the option of finding caches in other areas during those seasons if you are worried about it. Hunters don't have those kinds of options. Luckily in Idaho we don't have such silly laws (although we have enough of our own), so the only thing I can't do on Sunday is buy liquor (another stupid religous reason I'm sure). So in short, go find some other place to cache hunt during hunting season. The hunters will appreciate your not crashing through the woods scaring all the game, and you'll be less likely to have to deal with Bambi running out in front of your BMW on the way home from caching next spring. Everyone wins.
  3. When you look at pricing at campmor look for last years model. They are usually the same tent, but considerably cheaper. Like the Meteor light on your list at $230 can be found in the 2003 model for $180. Fifty bucks is fifty bucks!
  4. My delivery date is Oct 21 too, but if the deal works out on the legend C from Target this may end up being a birthday present!
  5. Before you buy one go here. Campmor You should easily make your $200 mark. I bought the Comet, which weighs about 8 lbs. But in the summer you can use the footprint and the fly without the main tent for ultra light packing.
  6. Maybe we have struck on paydirt here. A hiking stick with a variable setting stun gun, a "just playing around" setting for using on muggers, and a "hell is coming to breakfast" setting for Grizz. with a 12 gauge bangstick option in case the bear(or mugger) doesn't get the message with a zap. I bet it would sell, especially with the anti-gun crowd. cattle prod fun!
  7. I'd like to see the numbers on the two coins on the top left in your photo Jon. My guess is 001 and 201. Makes me wonder what those two would pull in on E-bay. After seeing coins get snatched up and kept right after I placed them, and seeing how quickly new coins were grabbed after Jon placed them, I decided that I was going to keep the two that I have. One is the 2cnd series that he placed in his 2000 find, and the other is a first run that my sister took on a sailing trip around the world with her, so they are both special. If I knew for sure that they would keep moving and not get kept by the first person that grabbed them, I would consider putting them back in circulation, but odds are they wouldn't last a day. It just makes them all the more valuable. By the way, Moun10Bike doesn't have an evil bone in his body. He is genuinely one of the nicest people I have ever met, but that's ok, I more than make up for it.
  8. Not a bad idea Logscaler, but how about going a step farther and getting one of those "bang sticks" they use for sharks? I think they hold a 12 gauge shell, and when you hit the attacker it discharges and turns it's insides to jelly. You would have to make sure it had a really dependable safety on it for sure.
  9. Before you buy check out this site. campmor I have a Sierra designs tent and sleeping bag that I am very happy with. I got last years model tent for well under $150. 3 person, 3 season, 8lbs, and you can use the fly and footprint for super lightweight summer camping. I also have a Mountainsmith pack that I like a lot, but I don't think they make an external frame.
  10. Close, it was the 431 TES, which fell under the 57FWW, even though we weren't stationed at Nellis. Cool, I was in falcon amu and later viper ot&e at Nellis 87 thru 91. I have often wondered if I would ever meet any of the people I used to work with again. Was the 431 out of Mt. Home? RE testing units side by side. I hear that they will interfere with each other if in close proximity. Just hearsay, so I don't know if it's true or not. From personal experience (legend and rino120) I have noticed that sometimes one performs better under some circumstances and the other shines in other circumstances. But both get me within 20ft pretty much every time, and thats close enough for caching.

    Failure

Just a thought, are you sure your gps is set up correctly? Hmm, I just noticed Travisl joined up the same exact day I did. Let me guess, you got a gps for Christmas in 2001?
  12. You didn't happen to be in the 57ags did you? I for one hope that civilian gpsr's don't get any more accurate than they are right now. If they got down to centimeters this hobby would be a bore.
  13. I wanted to see if I meet the minimum requirements. Let's see... Weight - 300grain hollow point % Capsaicin - 0%, I use a lead substitute Megaphone Shaped Cloud - close, mushroom shaped projectile Minimum Range 25 ft - Got that covered, easily 100yds Time of Continuous Spray 6 seconds or more - Depends how many speed loaders you carry. Must Be EPA Registered with a number - I am registered, but not with EPA One thing is for sure, if I survive the attack, the bear will never attack another hiker/biker/camper again, and I like my odds a lot better than if I was carrying pepper spray. A note on pepper spray, if you ever use it at all throw the can away and never take it with you again. It acts as an attractant to bears.
  14. It never fails, there's always someone out there that wants to put a shine on a tennis shoe.
  15. I'm just curious how many people are like me when looking at the forums. I see a thread that looks interesting, open it up and start scanning the replies. A lot of the replies are fairly short three or four liners, but there are always a few people that want to impart all of their vast knowledge upon us and write a whole book in their reply. I tend to read all the short, to the point ones and skip right by the lengthy ones. Is it just me? Do I need to be more patient, or do some of these people need to go find a local chapter of "on and on anon"? Now I need to go back and see how many times I've done that myself.
  16. You mean you don't!? Now if I could just find a geocaching partner.....since my last one popped.
  17. Didn't see it on the page, how far is the hike to the campground? Depending on where you park, 0 to 300 feet. Paved road all the way to the campground so that people coming up for one day can drive their cars.
  18. Here's another open invite for anyone that wants. Come to my event next weekend Cache Bash and I guarantee you will not be bored. End shameless plug
  19. I am so bummed, nobody wants/is likely to meet me. Probably because I am a forum irregular. Just as well though, as I would probably steal their hubcaps. I would like to meet some of the Admin and Jeremy, because I have never met any multi-millionares before. I bet they have really nice hubcaps!

    Moun10tyke

Actually both were suggested , but Moun10Tyke was the final decision. Imagine, being too young to be a charter member!

    Moun10tyke

Congratulations! Glad to see everyone is happy and healthy. Shouldn't that be Moun10Tryke? Be carefull now, those things have a way of sucking all the toys right out of your garage!
  22. Don't worry, I told the bear it was a potluck and he had to bring his own grub (or grubs in his case), and that goes double for the ticks. I hiked and rode all over the area last weekend and the ticks are pretty much done, didn't pick up a single one even with all the bushwhacking I did.
  23. In case anyone needs to kill some time around the middle of August. Cache Bash IV
  24. The handyman's secret weapon, duct tape!
  25. Yes, it's true. There is no Idaho. And if there were, it would be a horrible place with lot's of nasty bugs, terrible hunting and fishing, and no available camping spots. Definitely not a place you would like to visit, or move to! Brought to you by the Idaho tourism board, reminding you that a vacation in Idaho is not supposed to last 40 years.
