  1. much as I can see how the separation *could* be useful, I think in the end it might be more confusing than if people just include better information in the cache description. When I place or hunt a cahce, I try and consider alternate yet viable routes to get to the cache, and each of those routes may end up with vastly different distance/elevation change ratings that would both correspond to roughly the same difficulty of terrain rating that we are using now. Case in point is my one physical cache. Going the direct overland route it is about .6 miles round-trip, but with some pretty severe climbs up ravines (just ask some of the people that have gone that way to my cache), while the preferred (and mentioned in the description) route is about 1.8 miles round trip, but with only gently rolling (well, one deep ravine but it has switchbacks and is a bridle trail) terrain. I'd consider both of the above to be a 2.5 Terrain (which is how I have it rates), but they wouldn't be under the proposed situation. And several of the ones I've found have had similar different alternates. So unless there were one way, or different yet very nearly similar ways to the cache, it wouldn't be more useful. Ah, I love intelligent discussions like this... gets tiring listening to people complain about this and that... 3. well, we've never really organized anything here in NorthEast Ohio (any interest in forming a nominal group?), but if we ever do, I have an idea for a possible acronym for it (i am an award-winning amateur acronym writer ) GONER (Geo-Cachers of Ohio's NorthEast Region) well good caching to all, and see you GONERs at the Metroparks Picnic... 5. hey, if it weren't too long or difficult, i'd be in too. I've got a Orienteering Cache event coming up in October, but i also mt. bike (not a lot off trail tho') and I also own a kayak. So i think an adventure race format might work (just as long as it's not too competitive -- I think most geocachers favour casual hiking, but it may just be me... ) "You will kneel before her in her altar in the trees" - Tara MacLean, Let Her Feel The Rain

  7. well i hope your even goes well... my event isn't until halloween... going to the orienteering club officer's meeting tonight, so hopefully will have more details set in stone soon... hopefully will have info by the time of the cleveland metroparks geocaching picnic... 9. and one of the books i traded out from a cache was a bookcrossing book. so they're out and about here in NE Ohio, too "You will kneel before her in her altar in the trees" - Tara MacLean, Let Her Feel The Rain

  11. i voted for the distance from a given spot, not in the sense of closest to home, because the ones i have done so far are spread out across NE Ohio and PA, but in the sense of distance from a reasonable starting point near locations i go too (my parents live near Sharon, PA, we have a cabin in Potter Cty, PA, etc.) The last (9th) one i did is actually the closest to where i live, but hadn't done it yet because the recommended route is about 3+ miles of hiking (although i found a shortcut that was about .75 miles (gotta love fording rivers). and the next one on my list i hadn't done yet, because it involves parking in a small pulloff along side a backroad and the hiking involves kind of steep ravinges and a wet stream crossing (but it should be mostly dry now...) 12. well if it's not too late, i wouldn't mind buying some (prolly in the 20-40 range) and color scheme really doesn't matter... "You will kneel before her in her altar in the trees" - Tara MacLean, Let Her Feel The Rain

  14. i'm from the cleveland area, but my family lives just on the ohio side of sharon,pa and i get down there fairly often, so i'd even be interested. i've still got to schedule a day off so i can make a day trip up to presque isle and hit some of those caches... 16. I've already posted this to the Midwest forum, but thought i would crosspost here for any Western PA/NY geocachers/orienteers that might be interested. I've gotten tentative approval from the local orienteering club to set up a GPS course at a future event (in October), and I'm trying to gauge the interest level that is out there for such an experiment, and looking for any ideas that anybody might have as to how exactly to plan the course, and such. thank you... 17. yeah, i realize there is a lot more midwest than just ohio, so that's why i cross-posted to organized geocaching forum too, but i may take heed and post so that Pennsy cachers can find it too. And again, any thoughts that people have about ways to set it up, i'm glad to listen. for instance, i'm trying to decide if i should pre-post all the coords for all the GPS controls on the clue sheet so they can all be entered in (and a route made...) or just give out the first location, which tells you the coords for the second, and so on to the last control which gives you coords for the start/finish (and the actual physical cache with trinkets)... maybe i should start a poll? 18. c'mon, i know you're out there... i see hits, but see no replies. I'd really like to see this work, but if there is not any interest, then i really doubt that we'd see any future events. And if you have any questions about how the course is going to work, and such, please feel free to ask me... we're still in the planning phase at this time, so all input would be extremely valuable as to how to make this really work, and be a great time for all involved... 20. i've gotten tentative approval from the local orienteering club to set up a GPS/geocache course at an upcoming event (NEOOC - NorthEast Ohio Orienteering Club), and I'm wondering what the interest level is amongst the geocaching community for this type of event. 21. I've been working with the local orienteering club (NEOOC), and have tentatively gotten approval for setting up a course to be done by GPS. I'm just wondering what the interest level is out there for this type of activity. I do both geocaching and orienteering, and see this as a way to bring the two pasttimes together. So let me know what y'all think... "You will kneel before her in her altar in the trees" - Tara MacLean, Let Her Feel The Rain
  22. being an avid reader, the item I took from my first cache was a copy of "Catcher in the Rye". And now that I've finished it, I will be placing it in a future cache (along with a Lego Geo-Cacher) so some one else can read it... kind of a non-TB'd Literary TB... 24. Good, I'm glad to see this (as you may have guessed from my comments in the Lake Metroparks thread). The more we interact positively with the park district (such as checking that an area is okay for placing a cache, etc.) the better standing Geocaching will have with the Park District, which will reflect favorably as other areas such as Lake Metroparks, Geauga Park District, and the CVNP consider or reconsider allowing geocaching within their borders. Now the one for small two for large you mention, is that above the numbers currently, or just above any caches they themselves have placed "You will kneel before her in her altar in the trees" - Tara MacLean, Let Her Feel The Rain
