  1. A Leathernman multi type tool would be fantastic, or a swiss army knife with the pull out tweezer feature. A headlamp would be prefered over a flashlight......

    A pen and a pencil........

An extra log sheet to replace the first worn out one they find. : )

Edit: I mentioned something about not putting knives in caches....are we talking about swag items to put in a cache or more like door prize items for an event?

My reply was based on the topic and first post of the thread. Did I miss something? Or did you.........? : )

Thanks for all the input. What I was / am asking is for if you were just starting to geocache and knew what you know now about caching, what would you have liked to have had. I have some of my own ideas from my experience but I was interested in hearing other opinions as well.

I am giving them a ammo can to start their own cache so it could be swag items but it could be things to take with you while caching. I am going to include a introduction to geocaching book as well.

  2. I am helping put together a Geocaching "starter kit" that we are donating to be in a silent auction at a annual fundraiser.

The kit will include a GPS unit and a set of three geocoins.

We would like suggestions for items to include in the kit.

What items would you have liked to have had when you got started geocaching?

Is there a intro to geocaching book that you would recommend?

  3. This is about a different cache the original one being discussed in this thread. I thought it was on topic and didn't need a new thread being started.

I just received an email today of a cache on my watch list that was archived by a reviewer. The cache was temporarily disabled by the CO in the middle of October stating that they would be back in the late spring, after the snow melts to replace the container. (The last finders reported problems with the container.)The reviewer posted a note the end of the December reminding the CO to replace the container. The CO edited the original disable note the first of January and then yesterday the reviewer archived it stating there had been no response from the owner even thought the original temporarily disabled note was edited 10 days after the first time the reviewer posted a note.

Don't reviewers read through the comments? I think it would have been better for the CO to post a new note versus editing the original BUT this cache owner is an active owner with over 100 hides (most of them are part of a geo-art).

I think the reviewer was getting a little ahead of themselves on this archive and should have been more patient. Is it because geocaching is getting close to 2 mil. hides that they were cleaning up or is this a over active reviewer.

FYI, This cache is hid in a area that is not easily accessible during the winter and this is not our regular reviewer for this area.

  4. Always have an extra pen/pencil, batteries, tweezers and a multitool (plyers and knife) in your cache bag. And if you plan on trading swag, always have at least one great swag item for that time you get get to a cache that actually has good trade items.

  5. My Valentine and I have been married 16 years and with four kids we are pretty boring on Valentine's Day. After we give the kids their treats and get them settled in we are going out to dinner.

I did already surprise her with some flowers delivered while I am at work.

  6. I received a sticker type vehicle TB but since I was planning on getting a new car soon and didn't want to wait, I bought some of the flat magnetic sheet used for vehicle signs and put the sicker on to it. Worked great until one day the magnet came up missing while it was parked in our driveway (I think it was a neighbor kid).

Since then I received for Christmas from the kids a static cling window type TB.

  7. I have the problem that most caches I seem to find are nanos so travel bugs can't fit in them. I'd rather log a visited log for tb owner instead of it not doing anything until I find a cache I can put it in.

I often have this problem as well.

I would like to know that my TB is at least still out there moving around even if for awhile it is just with one cacher.

  8. Railroad coins... and FREE shipping ...

Merry Christmas to me, Merry Christmas to me... fa la la la la ...

    Arrived Saturday, 12/8.

    Very pleased !!

Glad you are pleased with them. I have enjoyed working on them (including the 2011 coin) but we are trying to decided if we are going to have one in 2013. They haven't sold as well as we had hoped and RRinc can't afford to keep too much inventory around.

  9. As a rule of thumb, I don't always log a DNF if I am going to be looking again shortly (later that day or the next) or if looked real quick I don't feel that I gave it my best effort. When I do come back shortly and still don't find it I will log a DNF and state that I looked a couple of times.

When I am looking for a cache I don't mind a log that stated that some one looked a few times before finding it. This tells me I might have to look even harder to make the find.

As a cache owner I would like to know right away if there is a potential problem with my cache so a good DNF log with some details is great.

You can never make everyone happy so play the game how you would like and get out side and have fun.

  10. If you made the phone booths red, they would be easier to see and this could've been prevented.

There's one that looks just like that one about 22 miles from me, and no, I don't live in the U.K.

Found a cache in one in Evanston, Montana last summer. :o

Far enough from the road to not get hit by a truck, but a derailing train might get it someday. ;)

Evanston,Wyoming. I am know that cache and cache hider. It is funny to see a red british phone booth in a Wyoming park.

  11. I personally enjoy a FTF but I don't just drop what ever I am doing to go look for one when I receive an email about a new cache. If I am going out caching I will plan where I go based on if there is a cache that hasn't been found in awhile in the area. Also, I live in an area where we don't have a lot of caches so a few of us like to go after a new cache and try for the FTF but I haven't noticed it get contentious between those who go out after them. It seams to be a good mix of a few of us that get there first, but I don't think it is because anyone is "letting" anyone else get the FTF.

I was back in my home town this last weekend and I specifically went after a couple of caches that were hid in May that hadn't been found yet.

The FTF hunt can be fun but like most things there are people who will take it way too seriously. Caching is my therapy. It is my way to relax and I am going to try and not get too worked up about it.

  12. I am still a little confused about the carving in the dead tree. Did it give a clue to the cache or for that mater have anything to do with the cache?

no, it was a silly, innocent, romantic thing to do. It wasn't a clue, on the geocache site or in the description.

If the carving had nothing to do with the carving then I think the reviewer over reacted and should not have pulled the cache.

Does this mean you can't hide a cache in that area ever again?

What if you mentioned on facebook that you were pulled over for speeding on your way to hide the cache and the reviewer had a personal grief with people who speed, does this mean they wouldn't approve the cache?

What if the carving was a few years old, before you started caching and you chose to hide a cache near by, does this mean they wouldn't approve the cache?

Again, not that I necessarily approve of the carving, but reviewers are to review caches not peoples behavior.

I would change the wording on the cache page and re-hide and re-submit it.

No, we are not allowed to hide it in that area again...

No other cache ever? seams a bit extreme.
