  1. 3. What coin you wish someone would make?: I would like to see a series of coins based on great architectural buildings / sites. Either modern or ancient. I think I might just have to start working on that!
  2. Second post - Question Two: Since my collection is small right (6 coins) now it has been coins that I like, but I am involved with the Boy Scouts of America (assistant leader, father of cub scout)and am trying to collect scout and outdoor themed coins.
  3. Favorite Coin I own is the Utah National Parks Council (BSA)
  4. I agree, both on the year and having both sides be different. It will cost a bit more to make two new dies instead of one, but you will make that up in greater demand for the new coin. By the way, that really is a good looking coin! One thing that puzzles me, the side showing the turntable seems to show the red part of the design going off of the front. Is the intention to have part of the design on the edge? Am I interpreting the design correctly? Actually the building has a "bump out" on it and the idea was that the coin would also have the bump out (or tab) on it. The date is on the sheild on the front of the train but is dificult to read on my sketch, I'll most likely move it. My idea with keeping the front the same was that it would be a series and because it will be used as a fund raiser it would make future coins more profitable, but it is some thing to think about. I am open to any suggestions. This is my first coin design, and the first item of this nature to be produced by the group for fund raising (they succesfully do HO scale trains / cars each year). I will be presenting information to them next week to see if we are moving forward.
  5. trying to upload an image [/img] [/img]
  6. Here is the preliminary design of the coin for Evanston Roundhouse that I am working on. This would become an annual coin with a new backside each year. Thought I would get any opinions before moving forward to far.
  7. These are the first coins I have purchesed and recieved through the mail. The first, "Friends of Caching I" my first coin purchase through Ebay. The other two from web site store. Actually recieved these last week but have not had time (could figure out how to insert an image) untill now. Let me try again to add the image [/img]
  8. Didn't work trying again. trying again. Try try again.
  9. Didn't work trying again. trying again.
  10. Let me first say that I went back over old topics to see if my question had already been discussed (I am sure it has!) and did not find anything. I help with a non-profit group that helps fundraise and promote a historic building site and being fairly new to geocaching and geocoins I thought it would be fun to make a custom coin to promote and maybe make some money for the group / site. I have worked up a design for the coin and will soon be sending it out to find out about costs, but my main questions is... What is a good way to sell the coin to make sure they get sold? I am sure some will be able to be sold locally but since it is a small community and I am not sure about how many local cachers are around, I would like to get it "out there" to sell enough to make this worth while. I have a feeling this first time (I have already thought of a way to make it into a series) I will be covering the up front costs myself, and if they are too big my wife will kill me. I am also getting all the info (costs, timing ect..) together first before I bring it up to the group. I have already talked to the city (the owners of the site) about placing a cache on the site to help teach some of the history of the buildings. FYI, the site is a Historic Union Pacific Railroad site along the original transcontinental railroad
  11. everyone needs a hobby, but isn't 1500 activated coins a little extreme ? 1500...NO, but 1800+, Maybe. Yes, an update is required. It was 1500, but now it is 1807. I would call that insane, but I guess that means that all of us here are crazy together. What is especially shocking is to do the math. The average new coin costs 8-10 dollars, but there is also the shipping cost. I think that it is fair to say that most collectors with more than 100 coins buy coins from overseas, which greatly adds to shipping costs, and from auctions, which greatly adds to base price, I think a more realistic average cost per coin is $15. Let's do the math for my collection: (370 coins) X ($15) = $5550 That is not a hobby, but a full blown addiction. But a relatively healthy addiction.
  12. Evan with permission you need to be careful about where cache's are hid. We hid one along our Greenbelt before winter, we went back to check on it (we, my daughter and I, had not finished getting listed) and it was gone along with another cache close by. The area had obviously been cleaned of brush, trees ect. The Greenbelt Foundation had given permission but the city work crews (or whoever did the cleanup) still got rid of the caches.
  13. Antique Silver would be my second choice.
  14. Black Nickel, which is the color I usually don't care for but looks great here.
  15. Having just seen and heard about this practice for the first time the other day I have mixed feelings. If the owner of a trackable does not want it dipped they could put there desire in the discription / instructions. I have a geocoin that I don't want to release, but I am going to start taking it with me so that I can see where all I have been on the map. I plan on logging it only if the coin goes there with me. I also take pictures at almost every cache (depending on weather, time and muggles)and would include these with the coin. (fixed some typo's)
  16. Well I guess I am new enough at this that I was confused by the dates on all the posts until I saw that the original post was edited yesterday. I started Geocaching back in May 2010 when the Boy Scout Group I help with bought some GPS units but didn't know how to use them. I took one home to figure it out and started caching (I thought it was a good way to learn how to use the unit) and me and the kids (mine not the scouts) have been hooked ever since. I posted for the first time on the forum back in october, but have realy spent time on it the last little while (I am interested in designing my own coin). I have 3 coins (4 are listed on my page, but one is my son's and I haven't let him sign up for his own account yet) Two were won in drawings through different Boy Scout Councils and the other was purchased from a Boy Scout Council. I am looking at purchasing a few more in the near future. My name is Tom and I think I have become addicted to geocaching and geocoins. I live in Southeast Idaho and as you may have noticed alot of my free time is working with a small scout troop. We will be working on the Geocaching meritbadge this spring and the boys are very excited. The rest of my free time is spent with my four kids. The oldest is 13 and the youngest is 7 weeks. My Birthday is tomorrow and I have gotten old enough to go into denial about my age. I have been spending more time on the forum (It's way too cold out there for me right now!) because I am looking into designing a geocoin for our scout troop. Does any one have any thoughts on doing a coin as a fund raiser?
  17. IS it to late to put me on the list for one red/yellow? Great design!
  18. I am sure it is on the forum some where but.... Any sugestions on designing your own coin. I am looking for the best ways to submit a design. Will a hand sketch work or should I work up something in Photoshop or AutoCAD? Has someone come up with a coin design program yet? (I better call my computer geek friends, this could idea could make me some money!) I have two ideas, one complicated and another more simple.

    Etiquette

I confess I am guilty of hijacking a bug or two. I have had good intentions of picking some up while on the road (I travel a lot for work) and wanting to move them closer to their goals, place them in the perfect cache and / or move them a greater distance, BUT we just had a new baby and with winter we have not been out geocaching in awhile (the older I get the more I hate the cold!). This thread has / will help me to repent and I will get out and drop off my bugs this week.
