  1. Yes, I renamed each map file after sending it to the card with Mapsource. I tried loading the entire map via Mapinstall yesterday and it didn't work, even though it broke it up into about 6 sections and it automatically named each one as TOPO 2008 1, 2, 3, etc. I'll try the idea of using Mapinstall again and installing sections, then either renaming them or moving them off the SD card so they don't get overwritten. I also have an email in to Garmin about this. Man, what a PITA... My 60CSx doesn't seem all that bad, now.
  2. Yes, I used Mapsource and renamed each file so the next one wouldn't overwrite it. Then I tried Mapinstall. The first section of US TOPO loaded okay, then when I tried to do the second, it erased the first even though I renamed it. Now, I'm trying to load the entire map as one file, but I'm sure it won't work because it's too large.
  3. I'm trying to load a section of US TOPO 2008 to the SD card. All the detail in every state shows if it's named the default "gmapsupp". If I give it a unique name, I lose all detail in some areas and those areas revert back to the basemap. The total map area is basically FL, GA, AL, MS and is under 300K, so it's not a large file at all. The problem is, if I can't name it something else, I can't put another map on the SD card without erasing the previous gmapsupp file. Any ideas? I do have a couple of other map sections with unique names on the SD card that work fine, so that shouldn't matter...
  4. Maybe... But, multi-use units like the Oregon have been out for years. And, now there's the awesome Montana. I just bought one and have CNNA 2013.10 on the micro SD card. And, no, I won't tell you where I got that map.
  5. Exactly. I've seen it posted, here and otherwise, over and over again how Garmin's "hands are tied" because of NAVTEQ's "issues"... BS. Garmin needs to be the 800lb gorilla in the ring, on behalf of its customers, and give NAVTEQ the "what for" about loosening up their map licensing agreement some. I don't know, but I'm willing to bet Garmin sells a HUGE percentage, as compared to of all other NAVTEQ mapping data combined. Garmin could definitely make a difference...if they cared, which doesn't appear to be the case...
  6. So, who's really smarter? The "smart poor", who will actually get it for FREE, unlike the "smart rich" who sue? The TRULY "smart rich" will get it absolutely for free, too.
  7. What? That makes no sense if the prices are reasonable. Are you referencing my post about MS Office? If so, read it...AGAIN... I paid for that MS product because they decided to sell it at a REASONABLE price. MS isn't stupid. If they priced it at $99, it's because they COULD...and I'm sure it's still profitable at that price.
  8. The manuals, crappy as they are, aren't "missing". They're just in electronic format, either on the device itself or you can find them on-line at Garmin and download in .pdf format.
  9. That's a very good point. Here's a real world example. I built a new desktop computer last fall and was going to "pirate bay" all of MS Office. That used to be one very expensive software suite. I thought "what the heck" and looked on-line just for grins to see how much I'd be "saving" myself. I found a brand new MS Office 2010 suite for $99 and you know what? I went ahead and bought it and registered it with MS. If it have been $499 or whatever? Yup, straight to downloading. Price software, maps, whatever accordingly and more people will PAY for it, especially when the "alternative" is so easy and free...
  10. You realize we're talking about Garmin, right? Their manuals..."good"?
  11. I've told them this same thing several times over the years via phonecon and email. They simply don't care...
  12. Absolutely not true. You are allowed to transfer it from VHS to DVD for YOUR personal use. Same as if you bought a music album on cassette and made a copy for your car, office, etc. If you have the appropriate equipment. Hardware wasn't the issue. Personally, I'd just download it and burn to DVD if I already had purchased a personal VHS copy. No new equipment needed.
  13. Not going to waste my time after I contacted Garmin about adding a QWERTY keyboard option for the newly released Nuvi 660. They said they had no plans to do it (and they never did) even though they'd JUST released a firmware update to add QWERTY on the much older Streetpilot 2720. I'll bet the code was 99% exactly the same.
  14. Absolutely not true. You are allowed to transfer it from VHS to DVD for YOUR personal use. Same as if you bought a music album on cassette and made a copy for your car, office, etc.
  15. Exactly. If people are so mentally weak as to "allow" themselves to be offended, then that's THEIR problem.
  16. Buy/borrow another type of GPS unit and/or go caching with someone else. Preferably somebody much better at it than the OP.
  17. Having owned a 3790T for well over a year and just recently getting a Montana 600... NO, they do NOT look "exactly alike". Not even close. You are NOT getting high detail DEM shading in "3D" auto mode on the Montana.
  18. BS. Or, at least it used to be... Very often, maps created and sent to a card in a separate reader would NOT work on the 60CSx. Personally, I had the most success sending maps to the card with it in the unit. But, now my 60CSx just sits gathering dust since I got my Montana 600.
  19. Can I have different lists of favorites in different profiles? For example, I'd like all my "outdoorsy" favorites in the "recreational" profile without seeing all the other "civilization" type favorites, such as restaurants not in the factory POI database, peoples' addresses, etc.
