  1. I know and don't really care. I want to know how he did this on a 60CSx. I know and that's why I called BS on having all that stuff rolled into one layered map. Um, no...he did not. He listed ALL of CNNA, an old Garmin Inland Lakes, Garmin US Topo, and THEN 1/3 of topos (central) from Ibycus. Read it again.
  2. Okay, riddle me this... HOW do you get beyond the 2025 map tile limit in MapSource when installing just the Garmin US TOPO? I have to break it into four files to get everything because there are well over 6000 total tiles. Sorry, but I call BS that you have ALL of Garmin US TOPO 2008, not to mention the other maps, compiled and loaded into one file on a 60CSx micro SD card... If you can show me how to do this, I'll retract my comment and eat crow.
  3. Yeah, yeah, layered maps...I GET it. I'm talking about completely different MapSource generated maps. The ENTIRE City Navigator North America NA, Garmin US TOPO 2008, custom topo maps, etc. You can only have ONE map file (even layered) active at a time named gmapsupp.img. Can you get to a list ON the 60/76 itself and select from files with ANY name and the .img extension? NO YOU CANNOT. RTFQ, please.
  4. I'd like to know if you can select from more than one map at a time to be "active", unlike with the 60/76CSx. Only the "gmapsupp.img" file is read on start-up. You can have multiple maps on a card, but you need a computer (or smart phone) to rename the desired file so it is read on the next re-start. With the Oregon, you can select from a list of unique names right on the unit as long as they all have the .img extension. Hopefully, this translated over to the 62 and 78 series "upgrades". Wouldn't surprise me if it didn't, though...
  5. Yes, I did. YOU asked the question.
  6. no i don't. how would that even make a difference in this context? If you even have to ask this question then, apparently, you don't even understand the difference between true and magnetic headings, magnetic variation, etc. The difference CAN be 30 degrees off at some latitudes if you're comparing a GPS electronic compass set to TRUE readings with a separate analog magnetic compass.
  7. Exactly...well put... So many people *want* to make up problems with using a built-in electronic compass and can't simply understand that if they don't like it? DON'T use it or buy a GPS with that feature in the first place. Instead, excuses like "inaccurate" or "battery burner" or "too hard to calibrate all the time" come up. My "old tech" 60CSx's 2 axis electronic compass doesn't use much battery at all. I've never noticed any difference and, like you said, use it sparingly. It doesn't have to be on constantly. Then again, neither does the entire GPS for real world navigation aside from geocaching games, which is what they are no matter what anyone says. Also, people seem to ack like it's so difficult to carry a spare set of rechargeable AAs or something if they're REALLY worried about "battery burning". I prefer to use a separate mag compass for my own reasons, but that doesn't mean my electronic compass is "bad" or just added crap because it's too "inaccurate" and calibrating is just soooo hard...
  8. According to the Garmin website: There is an expansion slot on the 62st. It comes with 500mb of memory. There is no expansion slot on the 62. It comes with 1.7gb of memory. So, the S is for sensors, the T is for TOPO. So, why not just call it the 62STx if it has eXpandable memory like the 60CSx? Nice to see Garmin is keeping up with their confusing name/numbering system as with the Nuvis.
  9. Geez... All the complaining about having to calibrate the electronic compass. Big deal. Hold it level, away from any large metal objects and spin it around twice. My 60CSx takes less than 20 seconds to do it. I can even do it "in the air" with my hands and not need to find a spot on the ground. It's always within about 5 degrees (+/- 2 or 3 deg) of my Brunton mag compass and that's plenty accurate enough for geocaching. We're not talking hundred mile treks here...
  10. Amazing what a VERY quick and easy Google search will turn up. Towards the end of this: http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerp.../0764584243.pdf
  11. I'd immediately return it, if that's still an option...
  12. I'm running 4.00 version firmware. The ring cannot be turned off.
  13. I'm using an 8 gig San Disk micro SD card with about 6 gigs of map data on it. TOPO, City Navigator, some custom ones, etc. No problems at all. This is with a 60CSx, which is internally identical to your 76CSx. I think the 2 gig limit was with an older firmware version. I'm running software version 4.00 on my 60CSx.
  14. Not really that different, from what I remember. Back then, a map/map update with two codes cost almost $150. Now, a single code one can be found for $70 all the time on Amazon and I've seen it as low as $39.99 for a three day "sale".
  15. Try not to lose those, too. Don't know whether to or ...
  16. Sounds like the Nuvi syndrome that's so well known and "loved". Keep adding more and more crap while getting farther and farther away from a GOOD, core GPS unit. I've seen many people commenting on how the Street Pilots were much better as a fundamental GPS unit than most all of the Nuvis. Having a 2720 and a few Nuvis...I tend to agree somewhat...
  17. Yup. They're available for sale all over CT. Keep looking.
  18. You might be surprised. He's in Connecticut and there's no telling what those 'tards might do. Glad I got the hell out of CT...Naugatuck, specifically...and finally made it home to AZ.
  19. Are you SERIOUS? How many bears are out there WALKING and crapping on the trails, parking areas and other high use areas on a routine basis? How many bears are even out there compared to dogs in the first place? Here's a hint for ya... Bears, by and large, generally AVOID humans. Where exactly are you finding all this "bear poop"? Were you *trying* to be funny, facetious or something?
  20. Could be, I guess, but I doubt it. I have two USB ports on this laptop. One is take by an external hard drive and the other has a USB hub. The only things on the hub are the 60CSx/Nuvi/Camera/Etc USB cable, which is usually unused...and an external mouse. That's it. No "high drain" devices at all...
  21. I know... Hence my "face" about a "worn out" 60CSx. If it's DAMAGED, that's one thing, but "worn out", to me, implies it was used SO much that it's, well... Worn out!
  22. So, how exactly did you "wear out" this 60CSx? Been dropped a few times on hard ground, also the unit is forgetting the date/time, and taking forever to aquire the sats. The rubber armor, is all torn up. Got a newer 60CSx on the 30th of May, and it is much better. Ah, so it was ABUSED and didn't just "wear out".
  23. Has anyone with a 60CSx had this happen? Today was the second time it's done this... I unplugged the USB cable and everything immediately went to factory settings. I could instantly tell because my start up "beep sound" changed. I had to set everything back, including resending all my favorites/waypoints. I didn't use the "eject" or "stop hardware" Windows feature, but I've done it a zillion times before without problems. I also hadn't recently sent anything to the GPS, either. Weird...
